This is an editorial report on the outcomes of an international conference sponsored by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) (REESE-1205273) to the School of Education at Boston University and the Center for Philosophy and History of Science at Boston University for a conference titled: How Can the History and Philosophy of Science Contribute to Contemporary U.S. Science Teaching? The presentations of the conference speakers and the reports of the working groups are reviewed. Multiple themes emerged for K-16 education from the perspective of the history and philosophy of science. Key ones were that: students need to understand that central to science is argumentation, criticism, and analysis; students should be educated to appreciate science as part of our culture; students should be educated to be science literate; what is meant by the nature of science as discussed in much of the science education literature must be broadened to accommodate a science literacy that includes preparation for socioscientific issues; teaching for science literacy requires the development of new assessment tools; and, it is difficult to change what science teachers do in their classrooms. The principal conclusions drawn by the editors are that: to prepare students to be citizens in a participatory democracy...

6 pages, 10 figures.; Kryptoperidinium foliaceum is a binucleate dinoflagellate that contains an endosymbiont nucleus of diatom origin. However, it is unknown whether the binucleate condition is permanent or not and how the diatom nucleus behaves during the life history processes. In this sense, it is also unknown if there is a sexual cycle or a resting stage during the life history of this species, two key aspects necessary to understand the life history strategy of this dinoflagellate. To answer these questions, life history and cell cycle studies were performed with the following results: (i) Kryptoperidinium foliaceum has a sexual cycle and in the dinoflagellate strains studied, the binucleate condition is permanent. Sexuality in the host was confirmed by the presence of fusing gamete pairs and planozygotes in clonal cultures (revealing homothallism), but signs of meiosis in the endosymbiont were not observed. The endosymbiont nucleus likely fuses first, because fusing gamete pairs were found to have two dinoflagellate nuclei but only one endosymbiont nucleus. After complete gamete fusion, the planozygotes had apparently normal endosymbiont and dinoflagellate nuclei. (ii) Asexual division studies using flow cytometry showed that the S phase in the endosymbiont (diatom) nucleus starts 6–8 h later than in the host nucleus...

E-thesis pagination different from hard-bound copy.; This thesis takes as its subject the millenarian movement of 1856?7, commonly known as the Xhosa Cattle-Killing. My project examines a range of literary representations of this seminal moment in South African history: novels, plays, and short stories in English or English translation. The period under consideration encompasses the earliest literary responses to the Cattle-Killing and includes critical historical-political moments such as: the incorporation of the last independent black territory into the Cape Colony, the creation of the Union of South Africa, the passing of the Land Act, the enfranchisement of white women and the enactment of Hertzog?s ?native bills?. The project consists of close, contextual readings, and the approach is cross-cultural and interdisciplinary. In this dissertation I examine the meaning that has accrued to the Cattle-Killing, and the role that literary accounts have played in interpreting and defining this pivotal event in the historical consciousness of their sometimes considerable audiences. In some cases, these creative works have anticipated trends in formal historiography and suggested new ways to interrogate the evidence. But the accounts do more than creatively reconstruct the past. They are also implicated in their respective presents and use the Cattle-Killing to ?write out? contemporaneous concerns: be it female emancipation...

The dissertation, which bears the title ?The horse in European history, 1550-1900?, breaks new ground in our understanding of European history by making sense out of the history of a continent once dominated by and dependent on horses. By placing the horse at the centre, the PhD, which adopts a broadly cultural historical approach, proposes to rise above the blindness of historians living within a post-equine age. Positing the concept of the ?equine economy?, the thesis strives to comprehend the behaviour and beliefs of those involved within a world ? split between the ?riding?, ?driving? and ?walking? ? in which conflict raged over access to, ownership of, knowledge about, and antipathies towards the horse. Revealing the extent to which the riding classes ? who preferred the breeding of saddle horses and whose exalted opinions on equine matters were forged perched high on horseback ? exerted a domineering influence over the equine economy, the thesis points to their possession of hippological knowledge, military pride in the cavalry arm, control of state studs, and institutional presence in veterinary schools and equestrian academies as evidence of horsemen?s power, which held firm until at least the end of the eighteenth century. But the thesis argues that...

This project is a melding of conventional and oral history of the Jews in the Soviet Union. It shows how life changed immediately after the Revolution and the rapid social changes in the subsequent decades before the Second World War. The aforementioned, conventional [but brief] A-to-Z history is a precursor. It’s a basis of understanding for what’s at the heart of this project. That is the oral history of one Jewish family in the Soviet Union. Specific individuals with interesting life stories speak about everything ranging from: their childhood, work, grappling with their Jewish identity, anti-Semitism, loss and service during the war, and how they rebuilt their lives. What we find is that the oral histories of this family and the conventional history of Jews in Russia complement one another and explain more than just one would individually. The oral histories, however, are what make this work unlike any other traditional analysis of this period.

Digitization of library collections has made millions of books, newspapers, and academic journal articles accessible. These resources present an opportunity for historians interested in identifying patterns in cultural production that emerge over the space of decades or even centuries. For example, considerable interest has been expressed in studying the emergence, decline, and transmission across national and linguistic boundaries of literary form in the tens of thousands of novels published in Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Navigating such a large collection of texts, however, requires the use of quantitative methods rarely used in literary studies; the single, direct reading of even a thousand texts exceeds the time and resources available to most historians.

This dissertation demonstrates the application of probabilistic model of texts in the study of literary history. The major finding of the dissertation is that regularities previously identified by literary historians can be captured by probabilistic models. Following the first chapter, "How to Read 22,198 Journal Articles: Studying the History of German Studies Using Topic Models," which introduces representations of texts used in the dissertation...

Today, we are surrounded by web media. With new technologies, web design has been advancing day by day. The web industry continues to expand in its commercial use. As a result, designing web graphics is an essential part of graphic design. As a computer graphics designer, it is natural to study web design to develop good design skills. For my thesis, I wanted to research good design solutions for web graphics and make a prototype from the results. From the research, I wanted to learn the differences and similarities between printed media and digital media in graphic design using the topic, "The Greatest Designers in American Graphic Design". There are two reasons that made me choose my thesis topic. After studying graphic design as an undergraduate student, I was interested in some of the greatest graphic designers in the world. The Bauhaus, the Crystal Palace, and many other historical subjects were enough to make me excited about the subject. The first reason I decided on my thesis subject was to reflect my interests in the history of graphic design and to learn more about these graphic designers' artwork and their huge influence on graphic history. The other reason is that there are not enough web sites about graphic designers or the history of graphic design itself on the Internet for my research. Most information can be accessed on the Internet but I hardly found any useful web sites about graphic designers. As a result...

Hampel, Robert; This is a history of pro-market arguments about American education--the idea that we should reject the current public education system and replace it with a market in educational services that allows producers to offer competing schooling options and consumers to choose those that work best for them. I want to explore how and why libertarian arguments regarding education have changed over the twentieth century. The research questions I will answer are: (1) What did key twentieth-century market libertarians write about education in a free society? (2) How might the various defenses and visions of markets in education reflect the different influences on the intellectual advocating them? (3) How did market libertarian criticisms of state education, justifications for educational markets, and visions of what educational markets should look like compare with each other, and how did they change over time? Using the writings and biographies of several prominent market libertarian intellectuals, as well as works written by their contemporaries and predecessors, I will focus on how each crafted his or her argument for markets in education and how each imagined the proper role (if any) for governments and private actors in markets in schooling...

Life-history traits as causes or consequences of social behaviour: why do cooperative breeders lay small clutches?

Cooperatively breeding birds tend to exhibit high adult survival and relatively small clutch sizes. According to the life-history hypothesis for cooperative breeding, high survival creates conditions for philopatry based on difficulties that dispersers face when competing for territories in a landscape with slow territory turnover. However, this hypothesis evokes a puzzle because high fecundity should also lead to problems in territory acquisition because of the large number of competitors for each vacancy. We suggest two reasons for the observed association between small clutch size, high survival rate and cooperative breeding in birds. The first reason is that when survival rate is a better predictor of cooperative breeding than fecundity, a general life-history trade-off between clutch size and survival rate will create the observed association between cooperative breeding and the two life-history characters. Theoretically, a high survival rate is expected to predict cooperative breeding better than fecundity, because a high survival rate increases both habitat saturation and the direct benefits of staying at home. The second reason is that the reproductive value of the first offspring each year is higher than that of subsequent offspring for cooperative breeders (the offspring depreciation hypothesis). This is because these offspring will be able to delay dispersal and gain indirect benefits by helping at home. We show that this...

This article proposes a strong role for environmental history in informing current policy and debate in the policy field of sustainability (or, sustainable development). The policy agenda of sustainability is noted, and the unique attributes of these policy problems identified. A three part 'typology of relevance' is proposed, comprising general historical perspectives, ecological and human baselines, and direct policy and institutional lessons. The idea of more immediate lessons is discussed further, with some indicative examples drawn from Australia. Environmental history is argued to have potential as an antidote to policy amnesia and ad hocery. Furthermore, if environmental history is to prosper, then environmental historians must construct explicit connections with pressing current issues.

He does not exclude, however, the philosophical approach: within the texture of his writings on several objects, one finds the thread of a reading of philosophies. Certain specific passages can be pointed out which, by way of illustration, exemplify the Foucaultian reading of philosophies. On the other hand, Foucault does not choose as subject matter a reflection on the history of philosophy. Nevertheless...
