Laser-based diagnostic methods are being applied to more and more flows of theoretical and practical interest and are revealing interesting new flow features. Imaging particles or droplets in Nephelometry and Laser Sheet Dropsizing methods requires a tradeoff between maximised signal to noise ratio, without over-saturating the detector. Droplet imaging results in lognormal pdf (probability density function) distribution of pixel intensity. It is possible to fit a lognormal distribution to the histogram of pixels intensities. If pixel intensities are clipped at a saturated value it is possible to estimate a presumed pdf shape without the effects of saturation from the lognormal fit to the unsaturated histogram. Information about presumed shapes of the pixel intensity pdf is used to generate corrections that can be applied to data to account for saturation. The effects of even slight saturation are shown to be a significant source of error on the derived average. It is found that errors on the determined average exceed 5% when the number of saturated samples exceeds 3% of the total. This study also attempts to delineate limits, within which, the detector saturation can be accurately corrected. It is demonstrated that a simple method for reshaping the clipped part of the pixel intensity histogram makes accurate corrections to account for saturated pixels. These outcomes can be used to correct a saturated signal...

Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculations are performed for nuclear matter with an exact treatment of the Pauli exclusion operator and single particle energy in the Bethe-Goldstone equation. The differences in the binding energy, compared to the commonly used approximations, are non-negligible. These differences lead to a larger binding energy around the calculated saturation point. Furthermore the Dirac structure of the nucleon self-energy in symmetric nuclear matter as well as neutron matter is derived from Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculations. It is demonstrated that the effects of correlations on the effective Nucleon-Nucleon interaction in the nuclear medium can be parametrised in terms of an effective meson exchange. This analysis leads to a very intuitive interpretation of correlation effects and also provides an efficient parametrisation of the effective interaction to be used in relativistic structure calculations for finite nuclei.; Bei der im Jahr 2001 vom Autor selbst produzierten Datei main.pdf kommt es auf modernen Betriebssystemen mittlerweile zu Anzeigeproblemen. The Field Monte Carlo or Stochastic Fields method for turbulent reacting flows has been applied to the issue of sub-grid scale emission heterogeneity in a mesoscale model. This method is a solution technique for the probability density function (PDF) transport equation and can be seen as a straightforward extension of currently used mesoscale dispersion models. It has been implemented in an existing mesoscale model and the results compared with Large-Eddy Simulation data simulation devised to test specifically the effect of sub-grid scale heterogeneity on upper-air concentration fluctuations. The sub-grid scale emission heterogeneity is assimilated in the model as a PDF of the emissions. The results show an excellent agreement without the need of setting any model constant other than the ones already used in the mesoscale model. The stochastic Fields method solve for the PDF of concentration of dispersing scalars and therefore it posses the ability of handling chemistry of any complexity without any closure assumption. This study shows for the first time the feasibility to apply this method to mesoscale chemical transport models.; JRC.H.4-Transport and air quality

Bimetallic palladium-gold (PdAu) nanoparticle (NP) catalysts have been demonstrated for the better catalytic performance than monometallic Pd catalysts in various reactions; however, the enhancement mechanism is not completely clear for most reactions. This thesis addresses the investigation of PdAu NP catalysts with emphasis on the structureproperty relationships in water-phase reactions, using hydro dechlorination (HDC) of trichloroethene (TCE) as the model reaction. Catalyzed TCE HDC is a potential approach for water pollution control, in which colloidal Pd-decorated Au NPs (Pdf Au NPs) are known to be significantly better catalysts than monometallic Pd ones. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of carbon-supported Pdf Au NPs with different surface Pd coverages verified their core-shell structure (Au-rich core and Pdrich shell). Structure evolution was observed upon heat treatment, in which Pd was in the form of surface Pd ensembles at room temperature. The metals formed a surface PdAu alloy or a bulk PdAu alloy above 200°C, as determined from the average coordination environment. Results suggested a new way to promote Pd catalysis, namely, by impregnating supported Pd catalysts with gold salt followed by thermal annealing; such post-impregnation with different heat treatments could lead to >15-fold increase in TCE HDC activity. Pd ensembles on the Au NP surface were demonstrated to be major active sites for TCE HDC as the reaction rates correlated strongly with the size of Pd ensembles determined from XAS. The geometric effect...

IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Earth Observations and Remote Sensing; Near-real time ocean surface currents derived from satellite altimeter (JASON-1, GFO, ENVISAT) and scatterometer (QSCAT) data on 1 degrees X 1 degrees resolution for world oceans (60 degrees S to 60 degrees N) are available online as “Ocean Surface Current Analyses-Real Time (OSCAR).” The probability distribution function (PDF) of the current speeds (w) , constructed from global OSCAR data from 1992 to 2008, satisfies the two-parameter Weibull distribution reasonably well, and such a PDF has little seasonal and interannual variations. Knowledge on PDF of w will improve the ensemble horizontal flux calculation, which contributes to the climate studies.

Communications in Mathematical Sciences, Volume 3, Issue 4, 605-620, 2005.; We solve the Smoluchowski equation for steady state solutions of rigid nematic polymers and suspensions under imposed elongational flow, magnetic or electric fields, respectively. Under the three imposed fields, we show that (1) the Smoluchowski equation can be cast into a generic form, (2) the external field must parallel to one of the eigenvectors of the second moment tensor in steady states, and (3) the steady state solution of the Smoluchowski equation (probability density function or simply pdf) is of the Boltzmann type parameterized by material parameters and two order parameters governed by two algebraic-integral equations. Then, we present a complete bifurcation diagram of the order parameters with respect to the material parameters by solving the algebraic-integral equations. The stability of the pdf solutions is inferred from the minimum of the free energy density. The solution method is extended to dilute solutions of dipolar, rigid nematic polymers under an imposed electric field. The first moment of the steady state pdf is shown to be parallel to the external field direction at sufficiently strong permanent dipole or relatively weak dipole-dipole interaction. In this case...

Blind source separation consists on estimating n source signals from m measurements generated through an unknown mixing process of the sources. In the underdetermined case where we have more sources than measurements, we divide the problem into two stages: estimation of the mixing matrix and inversion of the linear problem. This paper deals with the first stage. It is well known that when the sparsity of the sources premise is true, measurements tend to align with the columns of the mixing matrix, so the problem can be formulated as estimating the peaks of multidimensional probability density functions (PDF). In this paper we analyze two different techniques to estimate this peaks: one is to convert the multidimensional PDF into the power spectral density (PSD) of multiple complex sinusoidal signals and use different multidimensional espectral estimation techniques to detect the peaks. The other is to convert the (m − 1)- multidimensional PDF to m − 1 unidimensional projections and estimate the peaks of these.
