This study examines the effectiveness of civic organizations focusing on leadership and the role of culture in politics. The study is based on a quasi-experimental research design and relies primarily on qualitative data. The study focuses on Miami's Cuban community in order to examine the role of public initiative in grassroots civic and community organizations. The Miami Cuban community is a large, institutionally complex and cohesive ethnic community with dense networks of community organizations. The political and economic success of the community makes it an opportune setting for a study of civic organizing. The sheer number of civic organizations to be found in Miami's Cuban community suggests that the community's civic organizations have something to do with the considerable vibrancy and civic capacity of the community. How have the organizations managed to be so successful over so many years and what can be learned about successful civic organizing from their experience? Civic organizations in Miami's Cuban community are overwhelmingly ethnic-based organizations. The organizations recreate collective symbols that come from community members' memories of and attachments to the place of origin they hold dear as ethnic Cubans. They recreate a collective Cuban past that community members remember and that is the very basis of the community to which they belong. Cuban Miami's ethnically based civic organizations have generally performed better than the literature on civic organizations says they should. They gained greater access to community ties and social capital...

How the Srebrenica Massacre Redefined US Foreign Policy

Gibbs, David N

Português
This special perspectives section features commentary on the implications of the Srebrenica massacre for U.S. foreign policy. Given the 20-year anniversary of the massacre, we felt that it was appropriate to invite a range of scholars to participate in a forum to address different aspects of the tragedy and its aftermath in the context of U.S. foreign policy. The forum is structured around a commentary by David Gibbs, author of First Do No Harm: Humanitarian Intervention and the Destruction of Yugoslavia, Vanderbilt University Press, 2009. Gibbs article, "How the Srebrenica Massacre Redefined U.S. Foreign Policy," is featured below. Within the next month, we will have responses to Gibbs' argument from several experts on the subject, followed by a closing commentary by Gibbs. As this article goes to press, a new development has emerged: “The Obama administration is moving to designate the Islamic State’s murderous attacks on the Yazidi in Iraq an act of ‘genocide,’” according to a press report. It should be recalled that last year, the regime of Bashir Assad was widely believed to be committing genocide in Syria, and in 2011, Muammar Gaddafi was at least planning a genocide in Libya. And in all of these cases, the claims of genocide were widely accompanied by calls for US and NATO intervention...

This study examines the appropriation of grammatical structures of African American English (AAE) by adolescent Latinos attending a multi-ethnic middle school in North Carolina. This study couples quantitative variationist analysis of four ‘core’ grammatical features of AAE (invariant be, copula deletion, past-tense copula leveling, and third-person singular –s absence) with the findings of an ethnographic study of Latino adolescent identity in order to better understand the social processes leading to the incorporation of AAE grammar into English varieties spoken by Latinos. Results show that Latino students from across social formations make use of AAE grammatical features, but differ significantly from African American students in terms of sociolinguistic patterning. Ethnographic data shed light on linguistic data in three domains: 1) differences in use of AAE structures between male and female Latino/a students, 2) the prolific use of AAE by one gang-affiliated student, and 3) the racial complexities within the ethnic category ‘Latino.’ Este estudio examina las complejidades lingüísticas y sociales del uso de estructuras gramaticales del inglés afroamericano entre adolescentes latinos que asisten a una escuela multi-étnica en Carolina del Norte...

Português
In his study - The Food Service Industry: Beliefs Held by Academics - by Jack Ninemeier, Associate Professor, School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management at Michigan State University, Associate Professor Ninemeier initially describes his study this way: “Those in the academic sector exert a great deal of influence on those they are training to enter the food service industry. One author surveyed educational institutions across the country to ascertain attitudes of teachers toward various segments of the industry.” Those essential segments of the industry serve as the underpinnings of this discussion and are four-fold. They are lodging, institutional, multi-unit, and single-unit properties. For each segment the analysis addressed factors relating to Marketing, management and operating concerns: Marketing, operations, fiscal management, innovation, future of the segment Employee-related concerns: quality of work life, training/education opportunities, career opportunities The study uses a survey of academicians as a guide; they point to segments of the food service industry students might be inclined to enter, or even ignore. The survey was done via a questionnaire sent from the campus of the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management at Michigan State University to 1850 full-time faculty members in two and four-year hospitality programs in the United States. Through the survey...

Obesity and Air Travel: Weighing Up the Issues

O'Neill, Martin A.

Português
It may soon be the norm for many airline passengers arriving at the check-in desk of any international airline with both stow- away and carry-on luggage to be asked to step onto the weighing scale as the airlines attempt to compete and remain operationally viable in what has become for most a cut-throat and highly litigious operating environment. The author's commentary seeks to highlight a number of the issues surrounding the current impasse. It is also intended to catalyze a more healthy and informed debate aimed at finding an acceptable resolution to this crisis prior to one being imposed which fails to satisfy the needs of either camp.
