Com o objetivo de combater a utilização desses equipamentos, apreensões têm sido constantes em todo o território brasileiro, gerando um crescimento da demanda de exames periciais por parte dos órgãos oficiais de perícia criminal. Intracranial electrocortical recording and stimulation can provide unique knowledge about functional brain anatomy in patients undergoing brain surgery. This approach is commonly used in the treatment of medically refractory epilepsy. However, it can be very difficult to integrate the results of cortical recordings with other brain mapping modalities, particularly functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The ability to integrate imaging and electrophysiological information with simultaneous subdural electrocortical recording/stimulation and fMRI could offer significant insight for cognitive and systems neuroscience as well as for clinical neurology, particularly for patients with epilepsy or functional disorders. However, standard subdural electrodes cause significant artifact in MRI images, and concerns about risks such as cortical heating have generally precluded obtaining MRI in patients with implanted electrodes. We propose an electrode set based on polymer thick film organic substrate (PTFOS), an organic absorbable, flexible and stretchable electrode grid for intracranial use. These new types of MRI transparent intracranial electrodes are based on nano-particle ink technology that builds on our earlier development of an EEG/fMRI electrode set for scalp recording. The development of MRI-compatible recording/stimulation electrodes with a very thin profile could allow functional mapping at the individual subject level of the underlying feedback and feed forward networks. When holding a tablet computer with two hands, the touch keyboard configuration imposes postural constraints on the user because of the need to simultaneously hold the device and type with the thumbs. Designers have provided users with several possible keyboard configurations (device orientation, keyboard layout and location). However, potential differences in performance, usability and postures among these configurations have not been explored. We hypothesize that (1) the narrower standard keyboard layout in the portrait orientation leads to lower self-reported discomfort and less reach than the landscape orientation; (2) a split keyboard layout results in better overall outcomes compared to the standard layout; and (3) the conventional bottom keyboard location leads to the best outcomes overall compared to other locations. A repeated measures laboratory experiment of 12 tablet owners measured typing speed, discomfort, task difficulty, and thumb/wrist joint postures using an active marker system during typing tasks for different combinations of device orientation (portrait and landscape), keyboard layout (standard and split), and keyboard location (bottom, middle, top). Currently, no available pathological or molecular measures of tumor angiogenesis predict response to antiangiogenic therapies used in clinical practice. Recognizing that tumor endothelial cells (EC) and EC activation and survival signaling are the direct targets of these therapies, we sought to develop an automated platform for quantifying activity of critical signaling pathways and other biological events in EC of patient tumors by histopathology. Computer image analysis of EC in highly heterogeneous human tumors by a statistical classifier trained using examples selected by human experts performed poorly due to subjectivity and selection bias. We hypothesized that the analysis can be optimized by a more active process to aid experts in identifying informative training examples. To test this hypothesis, we incorporated a novel active learning (AL) algorithm into FARSIGHT image analysis software that aids the expert by seeking out informative examples for the operator to label. The resulting FARSIGHT-AL system identified EC with specificity and sensitivity consistently greater than 0.9 and outperformed traditional supervised classification algorithms. The future power grid will effectively utilize renewable energy resources and distributed generation to respond to energy demand while incorporating information technology and communication infrastructure for their optimum operation. This dissertation contributes to the development of real-time techniques, for wide-area monitoring and secure real-time control and operation of hybrid power systems. To handle the increased level of real-time data exchange, this dissertation develops a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system that is equipped with a state estimation scheme from the real-time data. This system is verified on a specially developed laboratory-based test bed facility, as a hardware and software platform, to emulate the actual scenarios of a real hybrid power system with the highest level of similarities and capabilities to practical utility systems. It includes phasor measurements at hundreds of measurement points on the system. These measurements were obtained from especially developed laboratory based Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) that is utilized in addition to existing commercially based PMU’s. The Triple β-Spiral is a novel protein structure that plays a role in viral attachment and pathogenesis. At present, there are two Triple β-Spiral structures with solved crystallographic coordinates - one from Adenovirus and the other from Reovirus. There is evidence that the fold also occurs in Bacteriophage SF6. In this thesis, we present a computational analysis of the Triple β-Spiral fold. Our goal is to discover new instances of the fold in protein sequence databases. In Chapter 2, we present a series of sequence-based methods for the discovery of the fold. The final method in this Chapter is an iterative profile-based search that outperforms existing sequence-based algorithms. In Chapter 3, we introduce specific knowledge of the protein's structure into our prediction algorithms. Although this additional information does not improve the profile-based methods in Chapter 2, it does provide insight into the important forces that drive the Triple β-Spiral folding process. In Chapter 4, we employ logistic regression to integrate the score information from the previous Chapter into a single unified framework. This framework outperforms all previous methods in cross-validation tests. Analyzing images to infer physical scene properties is a fundamental task in computer vision. It is by nature an ill-posed inverse problem, because imaging is a complicated, information-lossy physical and measurement process that cannot be deterministically inverted. This dissertation presents theory and algorithms for handling ambiguities in a variety of low-level vision problems. They are based on two key ideas: (1) explicitly modeling and reporting uncertainties are beneficial to visual inference; and (2) using local models can significantly reduce ambiguities that would exist in pixelwise analysis. In the first part of the dissertation, we study the color measurement pipeline of consumer digital cameras, and consider the inherent uncertainty of undoing the effects of tone-mapping. We introduce statistical models for this uncertainty and algorithms for fitting it to given cameras or imaging pipelines. Once fit, the model provides for each tone-mapped color a probability distribution over linear scene colors that could have induced it, which is demonstrated to be useful for a number of downstream inference applications. In the second part of the dissertation, we study the pixelwise ambiguities in physics-based visual inference and present theory and algorithms for employing local models to eliminate or reduce these ambiguities. In this paper, taking the view that a linear parallel interference canceller (LPIC) can be seen as a linear matrix filter, we propose new linear matrix filters that can result in improved bit error performance compared to other LPICs in the literature. The motivation for the proposed filters arises from the possibility of avoiding the generation of certain interference and noise terms in a given stage that would have been present in a conventional LPIC (CLPIC). In the proposed filters, we achieve such avoidance of the generation of interference and noise terms in a given stage by simply making the diagonal elements of a certain matrix in that stage equal to zero. Hence, the proposed filters do not require additional complexity compared to the CLPIC, and they can allow achieving a certain error performance using fewer LPIC stages. We also extend the proposed matrix filter solutions to a multicarrier DS-CDMA system, where we consider two types of receivers. In one receiver (referred to as Type-I receiver), LPIC is performed on each subcarrier first, followed by multicarrier combining (MCC). In the other receiver (called Type-II receiver), MCC is performed first, followed by LPIC. Most software development projects rely on Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) based on the desktop paradigm, with an interactive, mouse-driven user interface. The standard installation of ACL2, on the other hand, is designed to work closely with Emacs. ACL2 experts, on the whole, like this mode of operation, but students and other new programmers who have learned to program with desktop IDEs often react negatively to the process of adapting to an unfamiliar form of interaction. This paper discusses Proof Pad, a new IDE for ACL2. Proof Pad is not the only attempt to provide ACL2 IDEs catering to students and beginning programmers. The ACL2 Sedan and DrACuLa systems arose from similar motivations. Proof Pad builds on the work of those systems, while also taking into account the unique workflow of the ACL2 theorem proving system. The design of Proof Pad incorporated user feedback from the outset, and that process continued through all stages of development. Feedback took the form of direct observation of users interacting with the IDE as well as questionnaires completed by users of Proof Pad and other ACL2 IDEs. The result is a streamlined interface and fast, responsive system that supports using ACL2 as a programming language and a theorem proving system. Language workbenches are software engineering tools that help domain experts develop solutions to various classes of problems. Some of these tools focus on non-technical users and provide languages to help organize knowledge while other workbenches provide means to create new programming languages. A key advantage of language workbenches is that they support the composition of independently developed languages. This capability is useful when developing programs that can benefit from different levels of abstraction. We reasoned that language workbenches could be useful to develop bioinformatics software solutions. In order to evaluate the potential of language workbenches in bioinformatics, we tested a prominent workbench by developing an alternative to shell scripting. While shell scripts are widely used in bioinformatics to automate computational analysis, existing scripting languages do not provide many of the features present in modern programming languages. On October 21--22, 2005, some 150 leading scholars from many different fields, including statistics, telecommunications, biomedical engineering, bioinformatics, biostatistics and epidemiology, gathered at Rutgers in a conference in his honor. This conference was on ``Complex Datasets and Inverse Problems: Tomography, Networks, and Beyond,'' and was organized by the editors. The present collection includes research work presented at the conference, as well as contributions from Yehuda's colleagues. The theme of the conference was networks and other important and emerging areas of research involving incomplete data and statistical inverse problems. Networks are abundant around us: communication, computer, traffic, social and energy are just a few examples. As enormous amounts of network data are collected in this information age, the field has attracted a great amount of attention from researchers in statistics and computer engineering as well as telecommunication providers and various government agencies. Community structure of complex software systems: Analysis and applications

Due to notable discoveries in the fast evolving field of complex networks, recent research in software engineering has also focused on representing software systems with networks. Previous work has observed that these networks follow scale-free degree distributions and reveal small-world phenomena, while we here explore another property commonly found in different complex networks, i.e. community structure. We adopt class dependency networks, where nodes represent software classes and edges represent dependencies among them, and show that these networks reveal a significant community structure, characterized by similar properties as observed in other complex networks. However, although intuitive and anticipated by different phenomena, identified communities do not exactly correspond to software packages. We empirically confirm our observations on several networks constructed from Java and various third party libraries, and propose different applications of community detection to software engineering.

Este trabalho aborda a avaliação da personalidade no contexto organizacional, tendo como objetivo buscar evidências de validade para o teste Zulliger por meio da correlação com um questionário de Avaliação de Desempenho. Foram avaliados os resultados de uma amostra de 86 sujeitos, com formação em Engenharia Elétrica, Engenharia da Computação, Engenharia Eletrônica, Ciência da Computação, Análise de Sistemas e Estatística, com idades entre 22 e 43 anos, gêneros masculino e feminino. O Zulliger foi analisado conforme o Sistema Compreensivo. A Avaliação de desempenho considerou os itens relacionamento interpessoal, tomada de decisões, busca por inovação, organização e solução de problemas. As análises de correlação entre os dois instrumentos indicaram que profissionais mais disciplinados e organizados, que possuem iniciativa e uma visão prática e buscam resultados concretos são mais bem avaliados do que os imaturos emocionalmente, altamente críticos e mais egocentrados, que priorizam as próprias necessidades em detrimento das dos outros.; This paper brings information about personality assessment in the organizational context, and the objective was to look for validity evidences for the Zulliger test in correlation with a questionnaire of Job Performance Evaluation.
