Objetivo: Descrever as opiniões de estudantes quanto ao uso da tecnologia, as práticas educacionais vivenciadas, o suporte ao educando e os resultados atingidos na aprendizagem por meio de ambiente virtual. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo exploratório descritivo com abordagem quantitativa realizado em uma Escola de Enfermagem, com a participação de 43 alunos da disciplina de Fundamentos do Cuidado Humano I que responderam a um questionário, avaliando o processo empregado. Resultados: Os dados apontaram que a avaliação da atividade proposta sobre os sinais vitais, mediada por computador teve concordância positiva quanto ao uso da tecnologia, das práticas educacionais vivenciadas, do suporte ao educando e dos resultados atingidos na aprendizagem por meio do ambiente virtual. This article proposes specific areas of computing competence and illustrates how these skills can be acquired as an integral part of the curriculum of medical genetics. Geneticists are at the forefront in the use of computers for medical care, because of the driving force of the Human Genome Project. Computer searching of international data bases is the most efficient method to keep current with the explosion in molecular genetics data and with its immediate relevance to clinical care. The use of computers in genetics education could go far beyond the use of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) to show how to use computer systems to assist with clinical decisions. The proposed basic computer skills can be obtained using genetics software. The six proposed skills include the use of (1) microcomputers, (2) productivity software, (3) CAI, patient simulations and specific application programs, (4) remote computers, (5) data bases and knowledge bases, and (6) computers to improve the clinical care of patients.

Computer based video games are receiving great interest as a means to learn and acquire new skills. As a novel approach to teaching navigation skills in the blind, we have developed Audio-based Environment Simulator (AbES); a virtual reality environment set within the context of a video game metaphor. Despite the fact that participants were naïve to the overall purpose of the software, we found that early blind users were able to acquire relevant information regarding the spatial layout of a previously unfamiliar building using audio based cues alone. This was confirmed by a series of behavioral performance tests designed to assess the transfer of acquired spatial information to a large-scale, real-world indoor navigation task. Furthermore, learning the spatial layout through a goal directed gaming strategy allowed for the mental manipulation of spatial information as evidenced by enhanced navigation performance when compared to an explicit route learning strategy. We conclude that the immersive and highly interactive nature of the software greatly engages the blind user to actively explore the virtual environment. This in turn generates an accurate sense of a large-scale three-dimensional space and facilitates the learning and transfer of navigation skills to the physical world.

BACKGROUND: Computers and other forms of information technology are increasingly used in medical education. We undertook a study to evaluate the place of the computer in the assessment of clinical skills of junior medical students. METHODS: The history taking and physical examination skills of 136 third-year students were assessed in a series of structured and observed clinical stations and compared to their performance in similar computer-based problems. RESULTS: Students scored equally on the computer-based tasks and in the observed stations, but the weaker students who failed one or another component of the examination were more likely to pass at a clinical station and fail the computer task. CONCLUSIONS: This study has shown that computer-based clinical simulations can be constructed to supplement conventional assessment processes in clinical medicine and may have a role in increasing their reliability.

This portfolio of research aimed to examine the integration of Information and Communication Technology ( ICT ) into computer-based classroom learning environments in Thailand. The study was exploratory, investigating to what extent schools in the Thai ICT schools pilot project had classroom learning environments which were related to two student outcomes ( critical thinking skills and attitudes to ICT ) ; and to what extent the classroom learning environments were associated with certain teacher characteristics. The portfolio is presented in three parts. Part 1 reviewed the research literature related to the importance of ICT in education ; the ICT classroom learning environments ; student attitudes to ICT ; students' critical thinking skills ; and the role of the teacher in the ICT classroom. From this review, a theoretical research model was developed, based on teacher characteristics, student characteristics and student perceptions of ICT classroom learning environments as predictors of the two student outcomes. Four specific research propositions were formulated from the model to guide the investigation. BACKGROUND: Computer-aided learning is accepted by students as a learning resource, but the views of the teaching community are largely unknown. PURPOSE: To document clinicians' experience with computers and to record their attitudes toward computer usage in clinical practice and student education. METHODS: Questionnaire mailed out to all clinicians, including interns and residents, fellows, and attending physicians in 3 major teaching hospitals in South Australia, with a total of 646 clinical staff. RESULTS: Replies were received from 246 staff. Eighty percent of clinicians had at least 2 years of experience with computers and used computers for at least 2 hr each week. Despite this, there was an obvious lack of conviction among clinicians that computer-aided learning was of use in student education and assessment. This may reflect their lack of experience with this medium as an educational tool. BACKGROUND: A computer-based learning package has been developed, aimed at expanding students' knowledge base, as well as improving data-handling abilities and clinical problem-solving skills. The program was evaluated by monitoring its use by students, canvassing users' opinions and measuring its effectiveness as a learning tool compared to tutorials on the same material. METHODS: Evaluation was undertaken using three methods: initially, by a questionnaire on computers as a learning tool and the applicability of the content: second, through monitoring by the computer of student use, decisions and performance; finally, through pre- and post-test assessment of fifth-year students who either used a computer package or attended a tutorial on equivalent material. RESULTS: Most students provided positive comments on the learning material and expressed a willingness to see computer-aided learning (CAL) introduced into the curriculum. Over a 3-month period, 26 modules in the program were used on 1246 occasions. Objective measurement showed a significant gain in knowledge, data handling and problem-solving skills. The potential use of computer technology in teaching and continuous education for nursing motivated the development of this study to evaluate the virtual learning object, "Diagnostic Reasoning in Nursing Applied to Preterm Newborns" at an intermediate neonatal care unit. This descriptive study evaluates the appearance and content of the virtual object concerning aspects related to presentation, organization, usability and overall impression. Experts from the fields of computer technology (12) and nursing (31) participated in the evaluation process. Each sub-item of the instrument was assessed on a Likert scale and blank space was provided for comments/suggestions. All items were positively evaluated by over 80% of the experts, except for the 'informational density' criterion in the evaluation performed by computer technology experts. Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is one of many neuromuscular diseases affect ing motor neurons and skeletal muscles. This disorder causes deterioration of the motor neurons (specifically the Anterior Horn Cells of the spinal cord). These motor neurons that control muscles are selectively destroyed resulting in varying degrees of atrophy, weakness and paralysis of the trunk and limb muscles. In this first half of the thesis report, various aspects of Spinal Muscular Atrophy, including history, anatomy/ physiology, diagnosis, theories of its function, types, characteristics, heredity, research, and treatment will be examined. A second portion of this report focuses upon both illustration and interactive computer media and animation as a visual introduction to SMA for the lay audience, patients, and their families.

This thesis project's aim is to transfer the early or beginning read er's interest and focus from the video screen; i.e.: television or Nintendo, to the printed text of the book through interaction with the computer by reinforcing the narrated story with on-screen text. Much like read-along audio tapes, the premise of this thesis is to combine pictures, words and sound into a computerized support for a story. To create interest for the proposed age group, the criteria used will be based on an entertaining tale, quest, or game, rich in language and illustration, intermixed with humor. The goal is to get the child to use imagination, creativity, and memory by reading or having the text read aloud. Next, the user will inter act with the computer by re-creating the storyline on the screen and, later, developing their own ending.

The purpose of my thesis is to present Virtual Reality as a tool in aiding Education. I used the Macintosh computer as the driving base of my project, and configured inexpensive commercially available computer peripherals as input devices. I investigated the effectiveness with which virtual worlds can present information, as well as studied the use of low cost software, input devices and drivers currently avail able on the Macintosh Computer. In addition, this thesis describes the strength, weaknesses and concerns involving the use of Virtual Reality in learning and the limitations of the current technology.

As the era changed, education programs have developed tremendously and there are more people who seek for a new way to study easier. A game is one way to learn new skills; Network games especially can be used most effectively to support the goal of education. I believe that people can gain more knowledge through competitive games than memorizing by them selves. Some might think network games are not needed because there is no need for other people when you can compete with a computer, but There are limitations using just a computer and people feel more competitive when they go against other people since the reaction from the humans are more variable. The goal of this thesis is to study about how to create multi-user network game for learning English. I have created a network game using dragging and dropping object. The game is designed for 5-6 years old children, which allows them to compete against each other. Each time a player follows the direction that's been given in the English correctly, an animation will be played. When a player gets an incorrect answer, the other player will get the chance to follow the direction. The players are required to take turns playing. While using a multi-user game format like this, children can be provided with the motivation they need to learn.

The transfer of knowledge between individuals has increasingly become achieved with the aid of interfaces or computerized training applications. However, computer based training currently lacks the ability to monitor human behavioral changes and respond to them accordingly. This study examines the ability to predict user attention using features of body posture and head pose. Predictive abilities are assessed by an analysis of the relationship between the measured posture features and common objective measures of attention, such as reaction time and reaction time variance. Subjects were asked to participate in a series of sustained attention tasks while aspects of body movement and positioning were recorded using a Microsoft Kinect. Results showed support for identifiable patterns of behavior associated with attention while also suggesting the complex inter-relationship of measured features and susceptibility of these features to environmental conditions.

The education of children in their early development is an essential time for them to develop their minds both cognitively and creatively. Reading, in particular, is one of the most important factors within this developmental stage, and thus needs to be fully grasped by children. A widening gap of illiteracy in America may be lessened by a more interactive and creative approach to learning. With the advent of the computer and motion graphics software, this thesis proves that there is now a more engaging way of educating our youth. Using the characters within the words to create imagery, rather than a series of lines, this thesis adapts the story of the popular children's storybook I Love the Rain by Margaret Park Bridges. It attempts to make a visual link between elements of the story and the typographical contents within. An example of this is a portion of the story that likens the raindrops to race cars zooming down the school bus window. Unlike traditional print media, the format of this book, which this thesis proposes, allows for children as users to interact with the story itself. Once a child between the ages of four and ten reads a section of the book, they are rewarded with an animation. Health care is undergoing a revolution as patients have access to more and more information via Internet by the use of computers and mobile devices. In recognition of the rapidly growing need for patient first aid education, a collection of first aid self-care animations was created to improve treatment decisions and outcome safety. These animations are available for people via VisualDxHealth, a consumer focused website developed by Logical Images, Inc. The objective of the project was to produce simple and easy to understand first aid animations for a specific target audience. The production pipeline started with meeting with the client, drawing storyboards, deciding the art direction, animating, testing and ended with the final output. Working through this pipeline was beneficial to the workflow of the thesis. It allowed to manage my time more effectively to the production of the project and had more successful results. A combination of three-dimensional models and two-dimensional computer graphics were used in creating the animations. The project included an evaluation to determine how well learners accessing this site understood the instructions. Vislumbrando o potencial de uso da informática, na formação e educação permanente em enfermagem, realizou-se o presente estudo com o objetivo de avaliar objeto virtual de aprendizagem raciocínio diagnóstico em enfermagem aplicado ao prematuro, em unidade de cuidado intermediário neonatal. Trata-se de estudo descritivo sobre a avaliação da aparência e conteúdo do objeto virtual, nos aspectos relacionados à apresentação, organização, usabilidade e impressão geral. Participaram peritos das áreas de informática (12) e enfermagem (31). Cada subitem dos instrumentos continha avaliação em escala Likert e espaço para inclusão de comentários/sugestões. Todos os itens foram avaliados positivamente por mais de 80% dos avaliadores, exceto o critério densidade informacional na avaliação dos profissionais de informática.
