A quantidade de informação disponível atualmente na Internet é tão vasta que localizar uma informação desejada em tal depósito toma-se uma tarefa quase impossível. Ferramentas conhecidas como mecanismos de busca retomam, a partir de palavras-chave fomecidas pelo usuário, uma lista de documentos que, supostamente, contêm a informação desejada, relacionada com as palavras-chave fomecidas. Entretanto, multiplicidade semântica das palavras-chave, jargões, entre outros problemas, fazem com que uma grande quantidade de documentos recuperados não tenham de modo algum relação com aquilo que se deseja obter. Para contornar este problema, novas abordagens têm sido introduzidas: categorização dos resultados dos mecanismos de busca, emprego de análise de aglomerados nos documentos etc. Este trabalho utiliza técnicas de Visualização de Informação para propor uma representação que auxilie o usuário a identificar visualmente, dentre os itens tidos como resposta, quais deles realmente têm possibilidade de sanar suas necessidades. Após uma pesquisa que visou identificar o perfil e os hábitos dos usuários de mecanismos de busca, desenvolvemos um sistema que incorpora vários princípios de Visualização de Informação. O propósito dessa dissertação é a apresentação e a análise de formas de acesso a objetos em ambientes distribuídos com o objetivo de otimizar e facilitar ao cliente o acesso a serviços disponíveis em sistemas distribuídos. Para o desenvolvimento de nosso trabalho consideramos as especificações referentes ao processamento distribuído aberto (ODP - Open Distributed Processing), modelos de interfaces para programas de aplicação(APls - Application Program Interface) e plataformas comerciais de serviços distribuídos. A primeira forma propõe especificar uma interface para programas de aplicação, baseada na metodologia orientada a objetos, oferecendo um conjunto de serviços distribuídos fornecidos por plataformas comerciais existentes, para o desenvolvimento, manutenção e execução de aplicações. This article presents some results of the analysis of two practical cases of informational production considered priorities in the context of trustworthy digital repository structuration in a Portuguese public administration institution. This is an Information Science (IS) study in the field of Information Management (IM), assuming the function of information preservation as an IM variable under a systemic perspective.It addresses, on the one hand, the adoption of formats normalization as a preservation strategy based on the adoption of PDF/A, a work that has been carried out in recent years in the institution, and on the other hand, tasks and specifications that should be developed regarding the management and preservation of informational production communicated via email. The Unified Medical Language System (http://umlsks.nlm.nih.gov) is a repository of biomedical vocabularies developed by the US National Library of Medicine. The UMLS integrates over 2 million names for some 900 000 concepts from more than 60 families of biomedical vocabularies, as well as 12 million relations among these concepts. Vocabularies integrated in the UMLS Metathesaurus include the NCBI taxonomy, Gene Ontology, the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), OMIM and the Digital Anatomist Symbolic Knowledge Base. UMLS concepts are not only inter-related, but may also be linked to external resources such as GenBank. In addition to data, the UMLS includes tools for customizing the Metathesaurus (MetamorphoSys), for generating lexical variants of concept names (lvg) and for extracting UMLS concepts from text (MetaMap). The UMLS knowledge sources are updated quarterly. All vocabularies are available at no fee for research purposes within an institution, but UMLS users are required to sign a license agreement. The UMLS knowledge sources are distributed on CD-ROM and by FTP.

DSpace is a joint development effort by HP and MIT to establish an electronic system that will enable MIT faculty and researchers to capture, preserve, manage, and disseminate their intellectual output, and that will enable the Institute to maintain its intellectual heritage. The Three-Layer distributed mediation architecture, designed by Secure System Architecture laboratory, employed a layered framework of presence, integration, and homogenization mediators. The architecture does not have any central component that may affect the system reliability. A distributed search technique was adapted in the system to increase its reliability. An Enhanced Chord-like algorithm (E-Chord) was designed and deployed in the integration layer. The E-Chord is a skip-list algorithm based on Distributed Hash Table (DHT) which is a distributed but structured architecture. DHT is distributed in the sense that no central unit is required to maintain indexes, and it is structured in the sense that indexes are distributed over the nodes in a systematic manner. Each node maintains three kind of routing information: a frequency list, a successor/predecessor list, and a finger table. None of the nodes in the system maintains all indexes, and each node knows about some other nodes in the system. Concurrent software executes multiple threads or processes to achieve high performance. However, concurrency results in a huge number of different system behaviors that are difficult to test and verify. The aim of this dissertation is to develop new methods and tools for modeling and analyzing concurrent software systems at design and code levels. This dissertation consists of several related results. First, a formal model of Mondex, an electronic purse system, is built using Petri nets from user requirements, which is formally verified using model checking. Second, Petri nets models are automatically mined from the event traces generated from scientific workflows. Third, partial order models are automatically extracted from some instrumented concurrent program execution, and potential atomicity violation bugs are automatically verified based on the partial order models using model checking. ^ Our formal specification and verification of Mondex have contributed to the world wide effort in developing a verified software repository. Otimizar simultaneamente os interesses dos usuários, anunciantes e publicadores é um grande desafio na área de publicidade computacional. Mais precisamente, a ordenação de anúncios, ou ad ranking, desempenha um papel central nesse desafio. Por outro lado, nem mesmo as melhores fórmulas ou algoritmos de ordenação são capazes de manter seu status por um longo tempo em um ambiente que está em constante mudança. Neste trabalho, apresentamos uma análise orientada a dados que mostra a importância de combinar diferentes dimensões de publicidade computacional por meio de uma abordagem evolutiva para ordenação de anúncios afim de responder a mudanças de forma mais eficaz. Nós avaliamos as dimensões de valor comercial, desempenho histórico de cliques, interesses dos usuários e a similaridade textual entre o anúncio e a página. Nessa avaliação, nós averiguamos o desempenho e a correlação das diferentes dimensões. Como consequência, nós desenvolvemos uma abordagem evolucionária para combinar essas dimensões. Essa abordagem é composta por três partes: um repositório de configurações para facilitar a implantação e avaliação de experimentos de ordenação; um componente evolucionário de avaliação orientado a dados; e um motor de programação genética para evoluir fórmulas de ordenação de anúncios. The ADS All-Sky Survey (ADSASS) is an ongoing effort aimed at turning the NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS), widely known for its unrivaled value as a literature resource for astronomers, into a data resource. The ADS is not a data repository per se, but it implicitly contains valuable holdings of astronomical data, in the form of images, tables and object references contained within articles. The objective of the ADSASS effort is to extract these data and make them discoverable and available through existing data viewers. The resulting ADSASS data layer promises to greatly enhance workflows and enable new research by tying astronomical literature and data assets into one resource.

The SAO/NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS) is an open access digital library portal for researchers in astronomy and physics, operated by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) under a NASA grant, successfully serving the professional science community for two decades. Currently there are about 55,000 frequent users (100+ queries per year), and up to 10 million infrequent users per year. Access by the general public now accounts for about half of all ADS use, demonstrating the vast reach of the content in our databases. The visibility and use of content in the ADS can be measured by the fact that there are over 17,000 links from Wikipedia pages to ADS content, a figure comparable to the number of links that Wikipedia has to OCLCs WorldCat catalog. The ADS, through its holdings and innovative techniques available in ADS Labs (http://adslabs.org), offers an environment for information discovery that is unlike any other service currently available to the astrophysics community. Are the e-prints (electronic preprints) from the arXiv repository being used instead of the journal articles? In this paper we show that the e-prints have not undermined the usage of journal papers in the astrophysics community. As soon as the journal article is published, the astronomical community prefers to read the journal article and the use of e-prints through the NASA Astrophysics Data System drops to zero. This suggests that the majority of astronomers have access to institutional subscriptions and that they choose to read the journal article when given the choice. Within the NASA Astrophysics Data System they are given this choice, because the e-print and the journal article are treated equally, since both are just one click away. In other words, the e-prints have not undermined journal use in the astrophysics community and thus currently do not pose a financial threat to the publishers. We present readership data for the arXiv category "astro-ph" and the 4 core journals in astronomy (Astrophysical Journal, Astronomical Journal, Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society and Astronomy & Astrophysics). Furthermore, we show that the half-life (the point where the use of an article drops to half the use of a newly published article) for an e-print is shorter than for a journal paper. Na sua transição para o suporte eletrônico, deve-se assegurar sua qualidade, tanto de seu conteúdo como da sua formatação. Esse estudo focaliza, especificamente, os aspectos dos periódicos científicos eletrônicos Qualis A da área de Ciência da Informação. Os dados analisados referem-se a: dados gerais dos periódicos; tempo de existência de cada título; periodicidade; presença dos títulos nos mecanismos de indexação e resumos e em repositórios digitais; seções de cada título; equipe editorial; sistema de organização; sistema de navegação; sistema de rotulagem; sistema de busca; conteúdo das informações; usabilidade do site; e tipos de documentos de comportam (html, pdf etc.). As “Instruções para autores” foi outro item de analise. Em geral, todos os títulos de periódicos desse estudo tiveram desempenho satisfatório nos aspectos analisados. Deve-se também creditar que com o aumento da visibilidade, pois todos os títulos estão disponibilizados na Web, favoreceu maior acesso e uso pela comunidade científica...
