The advent of the World Wide Web (WWW) provides unique opportunities to transform medical education. Interactive computer assisted instruction has shown promising results but its growth has been impeded by logistical barriers. We designed an interactive WWW site--Active Learning Centre (ALC)--that offers a novel approach to these problems, combining remotely authored databases with computer-generated self-assessment tests. This study analyzes utilization and user assessment of the site. The site was found to be patronized mostly by students and health professionals from English-speaking countries. Users have been pleased with their experience and suggest further expansion of the ALC. Our data have also tentatively shown that their knowledge improved with repeated visits to the site.

A package of IBM PC programs has been developed which enables an individual to manage (accumulate, learn, and remember) his or her own personal knowledge base over time. It could be characterized as an “authoring” system for the production of computer-assisted instruction materials when the author is the primary (or only) intended audience. The package is designed to require minimal computer (and knowledge engineering) literacy, handle a significant knowledge base with a “small” computer configuration, and provide sufficient capacity for virtually any personal knowledge base.

It is generally considered to be fact that the early efforts in computer assisted instruction were boring adaptations of linear programmed instruction. This paper challenges the validity of such a position. Some early efforts that were truly innovative and immaginative are described and questions raised about the interaction between authoring system capabilities and the resulting instructional materials. To what extent are authoring environments affecting the nature of the instructional objectives and the materials designed to meet these objectives?

The overall purpose of the cancer education package was to provide an individual with a current assessment of his knowledge of a particular area of oncology and then to provide a brief explanation in areas of weakness. The package performed two general functions which included 1) self-assessment/education and re-evaluation, and 2) collection of statistical information on use of the package itself. All users were required to log into the computer system via a special security section. After entering a particular self-assessment “quiz”, the user could answer the question, skip the question, obtain an explanation of the question, or stop the quiz session at any time. After completing a quiz session, the user was given his score for that session and could then return to any or all questions presented during that session. The statistical data collected by the package were used to improve performance of the cancer education package and to provide the authors with feedback on their self-assessment section(s). In general, the clinical cancer education package has maintained a high level of interest for the users while providing immediate feedback of educational information. This approach may be a fruitful alternative to traditional computer assisted instruction.

Students in the health professions are often not taught the skills necessary to critically and accurately evaluate published drug studies, which are of increasing importance. The objective of this project was to develop, refine, and test a computer assisted instructional program designed to educate pharmacy and medical students to critically evaluate published drug efficacy studies. The interactive program thus far contains 10 main sections and 10 subsections. It is designed to serve as a stand-alone educational program which students can complete at their own pace. The software has currently been used and evaluated by second professional year pharmacy students using a pre-test/post-test design and a comparison group which did not receive similar instruction. Student comments have been positive overall, and learning was significantly increased by the program. The program will be further utilized and tested by second year medical students and Doctor of Pharmacy degree students.

Introduction: As the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal addresses a growing multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) epidemic by shifting care and treatment from trained specialty centers to community hospitals, delivering and monitoring MDR-TB therapy has presented new challenges. In particular, tracking and reporting adverse clinical events have been difficult for mobile healthcare workers (HCWs), trained health professionals who travel daily to patient homes to administer and monitor therapy. We designed and piloted a mobile phone application (Mobilize) for mobile HCWs that electronically standardized the recording and tracking of MDR-TB patients on low-cost, functional phones. Objective: We assess the acceptability and feasibility of using Mobilize to record and submit adverse events forms weekly during the intensive phase of MDR-TB therapy and evaluate mobile HCW perceptions throughout the pilot period. Methods: All five mobile HCWs at one site were trained and provided with phones. Utilizing a mixed-methods evaluation, mobile HCWs’ usage patterns were tracked electronically for seven months and analyzed. Qualitative focus groups and questionnaires were designed to understand the impact of mobile phone technology on the work environment. Results: Mobile HCWs submitted nine of 33 (27%) expected adverse events forms...

The Wumpus Advisor program offers advice to a player involved in choosing the best move in a game for which competence in dealing with incomplete and uncertain knowledge is required. The design and implementation of the advisor explores a new paradigm in Computer Assisted Instruction, in which the performance of computer-based tutors is greatly improved through the application of Artificial Intelligence techniques. This report describes the design of the Advisor and outlines directions for further work. Our experience with the tutor is informal and psychological experimentation remains to be done.

Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited; This thesis proposes that it is possible to create an adjunct to traditional instructor-led training that will reduce training time and costs and at the same time improve performance using commercial off-theshelf (COTS) software. Motivated by the lessons learned following the attack on the USS Cole on October 12, 2000 in which 17 sailors were killed and 42 were wounded, we created a simulator using readily available software in minimal time with zero funding and tested it against small sample sizes of eventual recipients of the training. The simulator, as part of a blended learning solution, was shown to be as effective as traditional instructor-based learning but was conceived at a fraction of the cost and with a significant reduction in total training time. Both of these factors are increasingly being valued in today's reality of increased operational tempo and reduced resources.; Lieutenant, United States Naval Reserve

This qualitative study investigated how a team of 7 hospital educators collaborated to develop e-curriculum units to pilot for a newly acquired learning -r management system at a large, multisite academic health sciences centre. A case study approach was used to examine how the e-Curriculum Team was structured, how the educators worked together to develop strategies to better utilize e-leaming in their ovwi practice, what e-curriculum they chose to develop, and how they determined their priorities for e-curriculum development. It also inquired into how they planned to involve other educators in using e-leaming. One set of semistructured interviews with the 6 hospital educators involved in the project, as well as minutes of team meetings and the researcher's journal, were analyzed (the researcher was also a hospital educator on the team). Project management structure, educator support, and organizational pressures on the implementation project feature prominently in the case study. This study suggests that implementation of e-leaming will be more successful if (a) educators involved in the development of e-leaming curriculum are supported in their role as change agents, (b) the pain of vmleaming current educational practice is considered...
