Tubal pathology is a common cause of subfertility. Identifying risk factors for tubal pathology in the medical history is important to distinguish between those couples who benefit from early tubal patency tests and those in whom presence of tubal pathology is less likely and delaying tubal tests is justified. This study evaluated whether a medical history of induced abortion is associated with an increased risk of tubal disease among subfertile couples. The reproductive history was determined for each couple. Tubal disease was diagnosed by hysterosalpingography and/or diagnostic laparoscopy. The association between reproductive history and the presence of tubal disease was assessed by calculating odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Data from 6149 couples were available for analysis. The OR for tubal pathology after a previous induced abortion was 1.6 (95% CI 1.3 to 1.9), after a previous ectopic pregnancy, 8.4 (95% CI 6.3 to 12), after a previous spontaneous miscarriage, 1.1 (95% CI 0.87 to 1.3), and after a previous live birth, 1.0 (95% CI 0.88 to 1.2). A history of induced abortion is associated with an increased risk of tubal pathology in subfertile couples. As a consequence, in subfertile women with a history of induced abortion...

This paper analyzes the anonymous article “Reflections on Russia, or Some Remarks on Russians Civil and Moral Status Until Peter I’s Reign” published in 1807 in the Moscow literary magazine “Messenger of Europe”. ‘Reflections’ can provide us with an excellent example of the circulation of ideas between Russia and Western Europe. It elaborated the mythology of Russian history in the seventeenth- and eighteenthcenturies idealizing Russian patriarchal antiquity and strongly criticizing Peter the Great’s reformist activity as an attempt “to transform Russians into foreigners” (as stated previously by J.-J. Rousseau). The anonymous writer argued that to be Russian meant to follow Russian “national” moral rules stamped in history. ‘Reflections on Russia’ are attributed here to the well-known diplomat and man of letters Jakov Ivanovič Bulgakov who might have written the piece in order to convince a part of the European, French-speaking (probably, Polish) aristocracy to change positively its views on Russia and its history in the 1790s. “Reflections” remained a manuscript until the Napoleonic wars when its rhetoric was claimed again as an instrument to win the sympathy of the European public towards Russia. The paper seeks to grasp the moment of the birth of Russian public spaces for debating the problems of Russian history. The publication of the ‘Reflections’ in 1807...

Teaching history in the traditional way has always been criticized as making history boring and not challenging students’ critical thinking ability. Using the multicultural democracy model makes history more interesting to students. Students also graduate being more aware of their responsibilities in the society. Multicultural democracy is not the same thing as multicultural education. Multicultural education concerns itself with students knowing, appreciating and respecting the diverse cultures in our society, and their respective contributions to the society. Unlike multicultural education, multicultural democracy incorporates other forms of diversity in addition, including religious diversity, gender diversity, diversity in sexual orientation, and diversity in socioeconomic class. Available literatures indicate that teachers that use multicultural democracy model are motivated by personal interest in and history in activism. It is not common to see all the elements of multicultural democracy in a class. However, turning politically disengaged students into socially active citizens is an essential element that must be present in a multicultural democracy education. Qualitative methods were used to collect data separately from four (two male and two female) teachers using semi-structured interviews. Analysis of responses was done by coding the interview data. The following themes emerged during coding: there are time constraints in U.S. History classes therefore it is difficult to teach multicultural democracy education; multicultural democracy education is best taught in government classes and not in history classes; and when the school corporation does not dictate what is taught in the classroom...

This dissertation is a study of organized, professional history in the American South centered on two formal associations: the Southern History Association (1896--1907) and the Southern Historical Association (1934--present), which sponsors the Journal of Southern History. The professional historians who led these associations emerged from the memorialization culture of the Lost Cause at the turn of the twentieth-century and formed the historical wing of the resurgent intellectual commitment to regional identity that fostered the so-called Southern Renaissance. As participant intellectuals in sectional reconciliation, constitutional disfranchisement, the Great Depression, World War II, and the incipient civil rights movement, these historians often found themselves at the center of important debates about regional identity and social change in the South. This dissertation follows the protracted intellectual and political battle first to segregate and then to integrate the southern historical profession and indeed the idea of "southern history" itself. Though largely white, these historians intended to be neither pro-Confederate, sectionally chauvinistic, nor nostalgic in motivation. Instead, they constantly negotiated between their regional devotion and their national ambition...

Can literature exist without history? Can history exist without literature? I argue that Indigenous authors and artists are now leading the way towards new tellings of Australian history which go beyond the last ice age. In Australia, the topic of 'Aboriginal History' is conventionally narrated from the starting date of 1788, with the British arrival to the shores around Sydney Harbour. From the late 1970s, historians started to fill the erasure of written narratives. They tried to address the neglected Aboriginal side of an Australian history that had been presented as a white narrative of nation. However, as my own work attests, we historians still followed the same dates as many other authors of national history. In Creating a Nation, a feminist history of Australia that I co-authored with Patricia Grimshaw, Marilyn Lake and Marian Quartly, I wrote about 'Birthplaces' at Port Jackson, a story of gendered encounter. In my edited volume, Contested Ground: Aborigines under the British Crown, it seemed appropriate to start in 1788 with the arrival of the First Fleet of British convicts and the marine officers in charge. I But I no longer believe this is adequate. Such a 'false start' is a narrative trick that we have replayed for too long.

At the end of the nineteenth century, when psychology emerged as an autonomous science, some thinkers started to declare its crisis. Ever since then the topic of crisis has continuously been present in history and historiography of psychology. In fact, recently some historians have actualized the theme of crisis without, however, considering the Italian contribution. This study therefore focuses on the theme of crisis and considers Italy as a case study. Starting with the comparison between international and national secondary literature on the topic, I propose to consider crisis as a multidimensional category. Accordingly, I suggest three different levels, and related indicators, indispensable for the analysis of crisis. The first level is investigated through the primary literature on the theme which, subsequently, helps us to understand how 'historical actors' perceived the crisis at their time. Combining quantitative and qualitative approaches, the second level of my analysis focuses on the external history and looks at the transformation of academic positions in psychology. Scrutinizing changes in the number of academic positions helps us to find out whether or not there was a decline in the evolution of psychology; the denominations of positions help us to understand how psychology was co-shaped by larger course of socio-political events. The third level of my investigation explores the internal changes and shifts in the structure of psychology. Starting from four hermeneutical categories (general psychology...

In this work, I intend to analyze how the poet, the short story writer and the novelist Bernardo Élis makes use of the History of Goiás in order to rebuild, trough fiction, the economic, political and social scenery of this place, in the beginner of nineteenth century. In his novel Chegou o Governador, published in 1987, the author esthetically presents a realm that drives the reader to a specific historical period of Goiás which are the years between 1804 and 1809. These years correspond to the events of the arrival and departure of D. Francisco de Assis Mascarenhas, a distinguished political character of the Portuguese colonial company, who masterfully led the captaincy of Goiás during these years, according to the local historiography which were considered by Bernardo Élis in his novel. It can be observed the novel establishes an explicit dialogue to the historical studies, that is why, in this research we have proposed, it was necessary to analyze the historiographical records that have mapped the central regions of Brazil during the nineteenth century, moreover, to find the notes that were responsible to notice the events of Goiás during the beginning of the nineteenth century. For that reason, the first step I have taken was to take notes about what the History could tell. After that...

Some aims of this research are to know and to analyze the Life History of a very singular teacher of significative importance to Brazillian Women’s History, Education and Politics. For (re)constructing her history, we adopted a qualitative methodology based on Life History Biographical Method in the Oral cathegory and also in other forms of documentation like newspapers, photographs, testimonies and other surveys already done. From this investigation, initially resulted some interviews with the contributor, which was been transcripted, analyzed and discussed under the scope of various references, like Genre, Memory, Oral History, Knowledge, etc. The (re)construction of Helena Ferrari Teixeira’s life history, the first woman in Santa Maria Legislature with great possibilities of being the first in Brazillian Legislature, she entered formally in politics in 1951, remaining for three consecutive mandates. We also found, in the family and/or public files a considerable number of documents and photographs of the teacher. Some considerations would be already pointed based on the first documentary researches we made, that provide us the possibility to realize and to understand the individuals nd respective social places taken by them. To observe the knowledge of the Teaching Helena Ferrari provides the reviewing of the places and spaces lived by teaching in different periods. From it...

The pace of life history is highly variable across mammals, and several evolutionary biologists have theorized that the tempo of a species' life history is set by external factors. These factors, such as food availability and predation pressure, determine mortality rates. In turn, mortality rate determines the age at maturity. High mortality rate results in early age at maturity; individuals must grow and reproduce quickly because of the high risk of death. Conversely, a low mortality rate is allows individuals to prolong their growth period and reproduce slowly. This theory assumes that growth rates are constant across species, and thus body size is determined by mortality rates.

This project posits that the intrinsic characteristics of species set the pace of life history. Among anthropoids, there is a great deal of variation in growth rates and the pace of life history relative to body size. The hypotheses proposed by this project state that the degree of encephalization in a species determines the growth rates, the length of the growth period, and the adult lifespan. Growing a large brain is costly and requires a prolonged period of development. However, a large brain has the benefit of reducing mortality by facilitating cognitive strategies for food procurement and predator avoidance. This cost/benefit balance results in the pattern of life-history variation in which mortality rates are correlated with the length of the growth period. However...

The topic of Dr. Leslie's role in the history of graphic design was mentioned by Professor R. Roger Remington in the Spring of my first year at RIT. I had read brief mentions about Dr. Leslie in both Nine Pioneers of Graphic Design and Graphic Design In America and felt this was an interesting topic that deserved more atten tion. The ultimate decision to research and write about Dr. Robert L. Leslie came about due to my interest in both design history and the field of printing. I had been introduced to the history of printing in David Pankow's class, "History of the Book," and wanted a chance to forge a link between this discipline and my own. Dr. Leslie had ties through his role as mentor to graphic designers and ties to printing through his diligent efforts as an educator in that field. Researching his Me and contributions seemed to be a strong bridge between the two disciplines.
