The authors have developed a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) addressing the management of adverse events to promote continuing education for nurses, including the following themes: pressure ulcer, medication errors, phlebitis, fall, and loss of nasogastroenteral probes. The pedagogical framework was grounded on the information processing theory and this applied study used the Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) model to develop the program. The environment was developed with HTML language through Microsoft Office Word 2003®. The authors developed evaluation exercises in each module through the Hot Potatoes program, version 6.0 for Windows. The conclusion is that the methodology utilized was appropriate for achieving the proposed objectives. OBJECTIVE: This randomized controlled trial aimed to determine whether an interactive CD-ROM improved cancer patients' recall of chemotherapy treatment information over standard written information, and whether demographic, cognitive, and psychological factors better predicted recall than this format of delivery. METHODS: One-hundred-and-one new patients about to commence chemotherapy were randomized to receive written information or a CD-ROM containing treatment information before giving informed consent. Patients' recall, concentration, short-term memory, reading comprehension, anxiety, depression, and coping styles were assessed with standardized measures pre-treatment. Seventy-seven patients completed tests for recall of treatment information before their second chemotherapy session. RESULTS: Intention-to-treat analyses indicated no significant differences between the written information and CD-ROM groups across recall questions about number of drugs received (p=.43), treatment length (p=.23), and treatment goal (p=.69). Binary logistic regressions indicated that for groups combined different variables predicted each of the recall questions. CONCLUSION: An interactive CD-ROM did not improve cancer patients' recall of treatment information enough to warrant changes in consent procedures. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Different variables predicted recall of different treatment aspects highlighting the complex nature of attempting to improve patient recall. Consideration of lifelong learning extends the World Bank's traditional approach to education, in which subsectors are looked at in isolation. Three years ago, when he articulated the Comprehensive Development Framework, World Bank President James Wolfensohn referred explicitly to lifelong learning as a component of what education means for poverty alleviation In 1995 "Priorities and Strategies for Education" (report no. 14948) emphasized the need to look at the education system in a more holistic manner. The 1999 "Education Sector Strategy"(report no. 19631) discussed the role of new technologies. The World Bank has just completed important new policy work on higher education reforms as well as a vision paper on the role of science and technology. The educational robotics, as well as the latest educational and technological resources, opens up new educational possibilities, and these possibilities are explored in this work. From an empirical pedagogy, an analysis of the interference of the use of educational robotics in the learning of scientific knowledge students was held in the final series of elementary education in a public school in Curitiba. The article offers a conceptual look at instructional design as a term now being used frequently in processes to generate educational material and virtual learning environments. It begins with a review of the history and evolution of instructional design and ends with a theoretical proposal. The objective of the article is to construct a critical proposal in response to the current debate over instructional design. The proposal places special emphasis on differences compared to the models that have served historically as the principal reference on this subject. Interactive Audio Visual Learning (IAVL) is a dynamic branch of computer-assisted instruction that integrates the interactive potential of a computer with the added dimensions of sight and sound. With the advent of low cost computers, interfaces to a variety of audiovisual devices, and authoring systems, more and more people in the health sciences are exploring the role of this new technology in teaching. Because IAVL is flexible in terms of instructional design, it can be used in the education and training of patients, physicians and other health science professionals. The number of applications of this technology is growing, and IAVL has the potential to become a major educational tool.

Interactive AudioVisual Learning (IAVL) is a dynamic branch of computer-assisted instruction that adds the dimensions of sight and sound to programmed learning. The power of audiovisual media to present complex concepts is coupled with the capabilities of a computer to analyze a learner's response to questions and then to direct the flow of information. The development of lessons in this format usually requires the input of content specialists, instructional designers, audiovisual media experts, and programmers. The IAVL format appears to be well accepted by learners and has been shown to be an efficient means of teaching. No standards for hardware, software, or presentation of material have been set, so efforts in the area of IAVL remain scattered. Several groups are actively working in the field of medically related subjects, but the major emphasis for most production teams is on corporate training. The commercial sector will probably be responsible for standardizing software and hardware, but lesson content for medical professionals will require medical educators. Since IAVL lessons are so different from standard lecture formats, more medical educators will have to be introduced to IAVL in order to create enough interest to get IAVL moved into the medical curriculum. The developmental efforts of those involved in IAVL productions for the education of medical professionals are important to the ultimate acceptance of the IAVL format.

Georgetown University's Library Information System (LIS), an integrated library system designed and implemented at the Dahlgren Memorial Library, is broadly described from an administrative point of view. LIS' functional components consist of eight "user-friendly" modules: catalog, circulation, serials, bibliographic management (including Mini-MEDLINE), acquisitions, accounting, networking, and computer-assisted instruction. This article touches on emerging library services, user education, and computer information services, which are also changing the role of staff librarians. The computer's networking capability brings the library directly to users through personal or institutional computers at remote sites. The proposed Integrated Medical Center Information System at Georgetown University will include interface with LIS through a network mechanism. LIS is being replicated at other libraries, and a microcomputer version is being tested for use in a hospital setting.

We introduce CS50 Sandbox, an environment for secure execution of untrusted code. Implemented as an asynchronous HTTP server, CS50 Sandbox offers clients the ability to execute programs (both interactive and non-interactive) written in any compiled or interpreted language in a tightly controlled, resource-constrained environment. CS50 Sandbox’s HTTP-based API takes files, command lines, and standard input as inputs and returns standard output and error plus exit codes as outputs. Atop CS50 Sandbox, we have built CS50 Run, a web- based code editor that enables students to write code in a browser in any language, whether compiled or interpreted, that’s executed server-side within a sandboxed environment. And we have built CS50 Check, an autograding framework that supports black- and white-box testing of students’ code, leveraging CS50 Sandbox to run series of checks against students’ programs, no matter the language of implementation. Over the last decade, physically immersive artificial environments (PIAEs) have proliferated. These environments afford greater interactivity, which has been shown to increase learner understanding, knowledge retention, and interest in the subject (Bonwell & Eison, 1991, p. 3; Prince, 2004). It would follow, then, that PIAEs would have similar educational benefits. However, little research has been done to prove that such benefits exist. Immersive environments include 2-demensional and 2.5-dimensional on-screen displays, semi-immersive screens, and physically immersive setups, such as CAVE and blue-c (Display Systems: 3D & Advanced, 2008; Gross, n.d.). There are many perceived benefits to immersive environments. At present, their novelty seems to hold students' attention better than traditional environments. PIAEs may improve students' attitude toward the domain; provide contextual learning, constructivism, and experiential learning; allow students to visit physically inaccessible environments; and provide concrete representations of abstract concepts. Infrared image analysis has become a very popular subject of study. Situations as recent as the Gulf War have proved the advantages, and therefore the need, of having not only the proper imaging equipment but the training and expertise to use that equipment. To date, there are few tools that analysts can use to educate themselves and the operators of the state-of-the-art imaging equipment. There are even fewer tools that provide the flexibility to control nearly every aspect of infrared imaging phenomena. Several pre-existing and a few new remote sensing sub-systems have been combined to create an extremely user-friendly infrared imaging analysis package that can be used to educate people about infrared imaging phenomena or as a direct analysis tool to assist analysts in distinguishing between infrared phenomena in actual imagery.

Hofstetter, Fred T.; iPads and other mobile devices are increasingly popular in higher education, but making use of them in the educational environment and integrating them into existing pedagogy can be challenging. The literature has confirmed both the potential of iPads in education and the challenges with integration. Results of case studies conducted with three higher-education institutions identify both the opportunities and the challenges of iPad use. Findings include recognition that the iPad will be an important tool for improving the overall educational experience for both teachers and students. To realize the benefits of the tool, however, colleges/universities will have to address the challenges of implementation and adapt to a changing environment. This project recommends guidelines and strategies for iPad integration to help increase the likelihood of success in improving how instructors teach and students learn in the classroom. These recommendations highlight the importance of providing access to iPads, with incentives, and a commitment by instructors and students to fully utilize them in their educational activities.
