Nowadays, going global is one of the finest solutions to conquer a superior and stable position in such globalized world. When companies are concerned about their businesses and growth, the diversity of geographies becomes an important issue, since it can multiply revenues and create greater brand awareness. Therefore, it is necessary to develop capabilities that allow a company of having sustainable competitive advantage in changing environments. Thus, it is through firm‟s internal organization of its critical resources that companies can gain such advantage. This dissertation aims to analyze how a medium-sized enterprise developed capabilities that underlie its competitive advantage over time. During the analysis, the resource-based view and the dynamic capabilities theories helped addressing the research question, focusing essentially in the internal and external context to the company, respectively. In this case, we tested how José Maria da Fonseca, a Portuguese wine producer, developed its capabilities in order to triumph either at national or international level. This study, not only identifies José Maria da Fonseca‟s strategies on becoming a recognized brand over the years as well as its international-market dependency; but also its capability‟s development which allowed it competing in new markets.; Num mercado tão globalizado como aquele em que vivemos nos dias de hoje...

Doutoramento em Gestão, Especialidade em Marketing / Classifications: M31 – Marketing; M10 – General; The international context is a dynamic, complex environment in which it is hard for firms to secure current performance without hindering future performance. This study developed specific dynamic capabilities as a feasible way to balance current and future export performance. Besides including an important domain to dynamic capabilities (market) and considering the relevant but understudied context of exporting, the study’s contribution is threefold: (1) it extends previous work and studies the impact of export market orientation on product development and market-related dynamic capabilities, (2) it is the first to disentangle the effects of dynamic capabilities on current and future performance, and (3) it tests interfunctional coordination and environmental turbulence as moderators of the dynamic capabilities–performance link. An online survey was administered to Portuguese export manufacturers. The findings suggest that export market orientation dimensions – customer and competitor – are not similarly related to dynamic capabilities. Export customer orientation is an antecedent of both exploitative and explorative capabilities...

Technological capabilities are at the center of the new theories of economic growth which focus on technology and human capital as engines of growth. Recent developments in this literature suggest that long-run economic growth, as seen most recently in East Asia, reflects sustained increases in firm productivity stemming from the continuous accumulation of technological capabilities. The study, technological capabilities and learning in African enterprises, reports on one of the first systematic attempts to assess technological capabilities and firm productivity in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The study utilizes primary data from two surveys of manufacturing firms in each of three representative countries, Ghana, Kenya and Zimbabwe, all countries currently undergoing extensive structural reforms. As a group, these countries span the diversity of per capita incomes and industrial development patterns of the Africa region. The study undertakes a comprehensive analysis of technological capabilities and manufacturing productivity in these countries...

The emergence of the dynamic capabilities view has essentially extended the resource-based view, while also providing an integrated framework for an understanding of how firms evolve and how they secure competitive advantage in rapidly changing environments. While much research into dynamic capabilities has been developed in the theoretical and qualitative arenas, there has of yet been limited empirical support for its core assumptions. Such a limitation, authors have noted, may be due to its equivocal framework and the lack of a model with specified antecedents. This research conducts both conceptual and empirical works to address this gap. The primary goal of the research is to clarify the conceptual structure of dynamic capabilities, while also investigating potential micro-foundations of dynamic capabilities and their influences on firm performance. These micro-foundations, as the research traces back to the origins of dynamic capability from much firm capability and strategic management literature, could potentially include innovation, processual formalisation, social integration platforms (i.e. employee training and education) and the application of information technology. Alternatively, the research also looks into a possible extension of the dynamic capabilities view by extending inter-firm activities. In this part...

The study is concerned with why some organisations, when dealing with their dynamic external environmental conditions, can achieve high organisational performance, while many others failed to cope. The literature review emphasised the formulation-implementation balance rather than strategy formulation as an important organisational dimension. This dimension has been relatively neglected compared to the emphasis research and organisations have placed on strategy formulation. The literature review also emphasised a receptive culture and proactive capabilities as important organisational dimensions in the pursuit of high organisational performance. The study defined receptive culture to include the organisational factors autonomous orientation and improvement orientation. The study also defined proactive capabilities to include the organisational factors adaptive capability, innovative capability and external intelligence capability. A research model of factors associated with high organisational performance was developed and research hypotheses were advanced with particular emphasis on the importance of the formulation-implementation balance, receptive culture and proactive capabilities. Structural Equation Modelling was used. The research targeted organisations based in Singapore. The study found that a receptive culture...

Background Knowledge mobilisation in healthcare organisations is often carried out through relatively short-term projects dependent on limited funding, which raises concerns about the long-term sustainability of implementation and improvement. It is becoming increasingly recognised that the translation of research evidence into practice has to be supported by developing the internal capacity of healthcare organisations to engage with and apply research. This process can be supported by external knowledge mobilisation initiatives represented, for instance, by professional associations, collaborative research partnerships and implementation networks. This conceptual paper uses empirical and theoretical literature on organisational learning and dynamic capabilities to enhance our understanding of intentional capacity building for knowledge mobilisation in healthcare organisations. Discussion The discussion is structured around the following three themes: (1) defining and classifying capacity building for knowledge mobilisation; (2) mechanisms of capability development in organisational context; and (3) individual, group and organisational levels of capability development. Capacity building is presented as a practice-based process of developing multiple skills...

In this paper I argue that robots, understood as artificially intelligent and autonomous entities, may one day be regarded as subjects of rights. The argument is built by looking at Martha Nussbaum’s capabilities approach, and especially its application to supporting animal entitlements: I draw an analogy between animals and robots by arguing that if what matters is not so much the inherent worth of a (human or non-human) agent, but what an agent is capable of doing so as to live a dignified life, then there is no reason why in the future robots should not have their capabilities recognized and protected as well. The paper unfolds this idea in detail, addressing two main objections to it and arguing that the capabilities approach might be the right way to deal with robots in the future.

This paper analyzes the relationship between organizational learning mechanisms, normally regarded as dynamic capabilities, and the operational flexibility of the firm, considered as an operational capability, within the context of the measurement of firm performance. Organizational learning is a dynamic process which enables the firm to adapt to changing environments, so making it easier for it to change established behaviour patterns and routines. This dynamic capability is therefore directly related to organizational routines and the operational processes that underlie these routines, and the objective of this study is to analyze this relationship and its effect on firm performance. To this end, we carried out an empirical study to test the relationships proposed in our model. Our most important findings were firstly that there is a link between the dynamic and the operational capabilities of the firm, and secondly that the development of dynamic capabilities will result in improved firm performance.

Under what conditions can information and communications technologies (ICTs) enhance the well-being of poor communities? The paper designs an alternative evaluation framework (AEF) that applies Sen's capability approach to the study of ICTs in order to place people's well-being, rather than technology at the center of the study. The AEF develops an impact chain that examines the mechanisms by which access to, and meaningful use of, ICTs can enhance peoples, 'informational capabilities' and can lead to improvements in people's human and social capabilities. This approach thus uses peoples human capabilities, rather than measures of access or usage, as its principal evaluative space. Based on empirical evidence from rural communities uses of ICTs in Bolivia, the study concludes that enhancing people's informational capabilities is the most critical factor determining the impact of ICTs on their well-being. The findings indicate that improved informational capabilities, like literacy, do enhance the human capabilities of the poor and marginalized to make strategic life choices to achieve the lifestyle they value. Evaluating the impact of ICTs in terms of capabilities thus reveals that there is no direct relationship between improved access to...

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s13162-015-0068-6; Knowledge management is a key capability for innovation. Prior research has typically conceptualized and examined knowledge management capabilities as a property of an individual firm or business unit. More recently, however, the locus of competition and innovation has started to shift from the individual firm to firms working together as an ecosystem. In light of these changing realities, we explicate a set of capabilities that are built, maintained, and exercised by the lead firm in order to enhance innovation within ecosystems. We highlight three knowledge management capabilities: (1) knowledge acquisition, (2) knowledge sharing, and (3) knowledge utilization. Drawing on open and closed action strategies firms use to foster team-based innovation, we develop propositions for the knowledge management capabilities of the lead firm. Our approach highlights three salient tensions that arise from team based innovation: autonomy?control, dissent?consent and uncertainty?certainty. We highlight how the three tensions need to be managed across knowledge management capabilities in order to increase the rate of innovation of the ecosystem. In doing so...

This research is based on the perception that the explanation of International New Ventures’ (INVs) performance demands a process view, going deeper than the standard approach, in empirical papers, of testing a direct relationship between individual- and company-level antecedents, and performance. In line with Aspelund, Madsen & Moen (2007) and Keupp & Gassmann (2009) arguments, a three-tier model was developed to investigate the process leading to INVs international performance. Based on the dynamic capabilities framework, entrepreneurial alertness was envisaged as the mediating element between firms’capabilities and their international performance. Empirical research confirmed the hypothesized model. Firms’capabilities (entrepreneurial orientation, foreign market knowledge, and absorptive capacity) significantly influence the level of entrepreneurial alertness, which impacts on company international performance. The paper makes three contributions to International Entrepreneurship literature. First, it highlights the key role played by entrepreneurial alertness in explaining INVs’ international performance. This is convergent with the dynamic capabilities view on firms’ ability to sense and seize specific international business opportunities. Second...

Organizational capabilities are those behavioral routines oriented to develop a specific task (NELSON; WINTER, 1982). These capabilities define what the company knows to do and how must to do it. Nevertheless, the repetitive character of these capabilities could be producing stopped processes (METCALFE, 1995) which both limit the generation of new capabilities and diminishing the dynamism in the production, reproduction and reconfiguration of new capabilities (TEECE; PISANO, 1997). This article compares and analyzes different theoretical-conceptual perspectives for generation and reconfiguration of technological capabilities within an organization. Additionally this article suggests that dynamic capabilities to make feasible innovation processes within an organization. The general concept of dynamic capacities will be used like driver of changes to produce and reconfigurate capabilities in the organization. The glance of the dynamic capabilities allows understanding the complexity of the creation, development and use of capabilities. This understanding could constitute material fundamental to manage learning processes and organizational change oriented to innovation.; Las capacidades empresariales corresponden a aquellas rutinas de tipo comportamental que definen lo que las empresas realizan para desarrollar una tarea específica (NELSON; WINTER...

The closely related, but often contradictory, issues of increasing access to university and improving students' chances of success in their university studies have been and continue to be an important research focus within higher education studies and policy in South Africa and beyond. More recently, the challenge of underpreparedness of students entering university has gained prominence as universities struggle to increase their throughput rates. It can be argued that increasing access, without increasing chances of success, is becoming a new form of social exclusion within higher education. Thispaperproposes that approaching issues of access from a capabilities perspective (as developed by Amartya Sen) provides a means of fostering access for social justice and countering access that leads to social exclusion. As such, this is a theoretical paper building on existing work on the capabilities approach within education to argue that the notion of capabilities provides a useful theoretical and conceptual framework for understanding the complexities of meaningful access to university in a deeply divided society like South Africa.

International entrepreneurship represents the process of discovering and creatively exploiting opportunities that exist outside a firm's national borders in order to obtain a competitive advantage. Firms in emerging economies are increasingly looking towards internationalisation since they are faced with rising competition in their domestic markets and attracted to opportunities in foreign markets. This article investigates international entrepreneurship by examining how the influence of entrepreneurial intensity and capabilities at the firm level influence performance, while at the same time considering environmental influences on this relationship. Based on past theoretical and empirical findings, hypotheses are formulated and then tested using correlational and regression analysis. Generally, the results support the hypotheses where both entrepreneurial intensity and capabilities are positively related to internationalisation and firm performance, while weak evidence is found for environmental hostility as a moderating influence. Several recommendations are made in light of the findings, where it is suggested that firms foster higher levels of innovativeness, risk-taking and proactiveness while developing human, social and technology related capabilities in order to enhance their performance and increase their levels of internationalisation.
