This work approaches the study of historical and cultural significance of artfactual variability in the Upper Madeira river...

Em publicação; Cultural diversity is a prominent feature of our globalised world and has been the object of much celebration over the past decade. However, intra-State diversity is perceived by many – in Europe, as in other Western countries – as a problem, a source of social divisions and tensions, a challenge to the unity and authority of the legal system, and a liability to the territorial integrity of the State. European countries have responded in many different ways to the “problem” of cultural diversity, according to their history and specific social makeup, but their responses can be summed up into two main approaches – assimilationism and multiculturalism. While multiculturalism has been blamed for many of the bad things that have happened in Europe in the last decade, it is still the best answer to the question of how democratic States, founded on the rule of law and respect for human rights, are to deal with the cultural diversity of their societies. One of its main aspects – the protection of cultural minorities – is, however, still a work in progress throughout Europe.

This dossier considers how African cultural diversity was handled during different historical periods and case studies1. The aim is to analyze whether colonization triggered or exacerbated friction in social and cultural coexistence in the contexts under study, whether these tensions remain today and whether these factors are an obstacle to political solutions which are sensitive to the recognition of cultural diversity.

Given that one of the Pan African Anthropology Association’s principle lines of research is the monitoring of ethnic conflicts in Africa, the contribution African intellectuals have made to the subject of cultural diversity management is a matter of great interest. The case study chosen for this paper is Equatorial Guinea, and the paper aims to provide an analysis of arguments that are raised in intellectual texts that deal with issues of identity and the country’s history. The paper will look at the legacy of colonialism in regards to the empowerment and discrimination of certain ethnic groups in relation to others, it will reflect on the construction of the post-colonial state and it will consider a reading of history that runs counter to the official one, that of the country being founded upon unity, by looking at examples of the ‘hijacking’ of the state and certain populations within a dictatorial context.

The purpose of this article is to examine the cultural competences attributed to the Community, placing particular emphasis upon the cultural powers conferred by paragraph 4 of Article 151 EC, which entrusts the European institutions with the task of taking cultural aspects into account in their action under the various provisions of the EC Treaty, in order to respect and to promote cultural diversity. The cultural cross-sectional clause of Article 151 (4) EC, by calling for a reshaping of EC decision-making in other policy areas, which have to give due consideration to the impact they might have on cultural matters, enables the attainment of cultural objectives under EC headings other than Article 151 EC. In an attempt to inquire into this less-widely discussed facet of EC cultural action, the analysis highlights the principal characteristics of Article 151 (4) EC and explores the influence it has exerted on both judicial and legislative Community practice.

The paper highlights the considerable positive impact of cultural diversity and the mutual benefit accrued for migrants and non-migrants alike. Against the background of growing hostility against, and increasing politicisation of the presence of migrants in European societies it sets a different vision of mutual respect, collaboration and benefit. So as to show the way in which contemporary migration is not a ‘one-way’ street of movements from poorer to richer countries where the rich offer all and receive nothing in return, the paper develops a four-tiered ‘hub’ structure that highlights complex multidirectional connections and mutual support of people in transnational networks. Central to the argument is the understanding that migrants do not come empty-handed but possess substantial ‘transcultural capital ‘that forms the basis for enriching reciprocal encounters between the global North and the global South. The paper offers much-needed empirical data from these encounters based on the author’s field work in Madagascar and across different European countries.

The literature on the local political participation of immigrants has focused on how institutional actors shape their organization and mobilization; however, these studies have not sufficiently explored the role of specific institutional actors in opening or closing access to the political process. This is more evident when certain aspects of immigrant cultural diversity are politicized through restrictive discourses and policy actions. Based on this, I ask in the present paper: How do immigrant organizations relate to political parties during specific moments of the politicization of cultural diversity at the local level? I argue that the way both actors relate to each other under these circumstances is strongly influenced by the ‘engagement strategies’ used by political parties to seek support for their positions. Based on the literature related to the political participation of immigrants from a political opportunity approach, I analyze the anti-Romanian-Roma campaign in the city of Badalona and the burka ban in public buildings in the city of Lleida, both in Catalonia, Spain. Initial findings show how political parties instrumentalize immigrant organizations to either legitimize their position or to mobilize them against other political parties. They also show how local dynamics define the interaction between these actors during politicization.; The MPC is co-financed by the European University Institute and the European Union.

The design of this project is focused on finding out about what is the teachers’ perception about multiculturalism, besides it is also focused on identifying the methodological strategies implemented at schools to respond to the previously mentioned diversity. A study of a correlational-descriptive case with a qualitative approach in the CEIP Gerardo Diego of Santa María de Cayón (Cantabria) is presented. In this case...

The purpose of this review is to analyze how recent medical literature has approach ethnic and cultural diversity in the clinical management of pain. It has been examined peer-review research articles and reviews using online databases (PubMed). The literature shows that in ethno-cultural discordant encounters, patients from minority backgrounds receive poorer attention and outcomes in pain management. Difficulties in the establishment of a good doctor-patient communication are in part held responsible for this fact. However...

Since the foundation of the European Economic Community (EEC) culture has always been present in the European Treaties, but its treatment has developed and evolved together with the transition from the EEC towards the European Community (EC) and from there to the European Union EU). At the beginning, culture was primarily conceived as an exception to the internal market. Then, in the Maastricht Treaty it became a transversal communitary policy. From the Treaty of Lisbon onwards cultural freedom and cultural diversity are already established as principles of European Law. In this paper we aim to study this remarkable evolution of the European treaties examining to which extent it has not been reflected with equal clarity in the doctrine issued by the European Commission and the European Court of Justice regarding its development and implementation.

From the beginning, The European Union has been pursuing the consecution of an internal market in which the four communitarian freedoms are guaranteed. The logic that goes through and makes sense of this paper is that cultural diversity has been absent from the rostrum that has texture to human rights discourse until very recent times. The cultural differences are not contrary to the universality...

The National Museum of Australia (NMA) reflects and refracts the communities, environment and social climate around it. The NMA is a recent museum and example of 'new museology'. As such, it is still in the process of defining and negotiating its role in the telling of public history, the form that its narratives should take and the appropriate tenor and tone with which to tell its stories. Every national museum is a product of their unique historiographies, (that is, their own histories and the history of these histories). It is the role of the NMA to best represent to its audiences the reality that Australia is a plural society. This is achieved through creating a mood within which ideas are developed and represented but also which allows the community and visitors to the museum to feel welcome to share their own ideas. The NMA is a museum, but it is also a place that encourages a climate of mutual exchange between visitors and the museum. The museum aims to enhance historical dialogue through recognising, representing, displaying historical narratives, as well as listening and responding to the plural histories of diverse cultures. The socio-political and cultural changes of the twenty-first century helped shape an expectation that national museums would play a role in sharing the plurality of stories in their communities. This is a narrative design study focusing on the understandings that a group of 6 Southern Ontario teachers have of cultural diversity and how these understandings integrated into their development of teacher identity. Given the high culturally diverse population of Canada and its national multicultural values, conducting this study on Canadian pre-service and in-service teachers offers an interesting contribution to the field. In efforts to explore the participants’ understandings, the research examined a teaching abroad experience. The aim was to investigate how these participants gained insight from their experiences with cultural diversity and whether these insights stimulated a greater culturally conscious teacher identity. Narratives provided a description of the lived experiences of these 6 teachers and identified meanings made from these experiences. Participants included 2 pre-service teachers who were in a teacher education program at the time of the interview, and 4 certified teachers who graduated from a teacher education program within the past 5 years. One on one interviews focused on lived experiences within a participant’s home, school community, and teaching abroad. The researcher used grounded theory during the data analysis to assist in identifying themes...

The objective of this paper is to analyze the effects of cultural diversity (ethnic, religious and linguistic fragmentation) on entrepreneurial activity. Using data from 39 countries participating in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) for 2008 and using various linear regressions, the importance of ethnic and linguistic over religious fragmentation as conditioning factors for entrepreneurship is demonstrated. In terms of implications, the study permits advancing, on the one hand, in the relationship between informal institutions such as culture and entrepreneurial activity, from the more novel perspective of cultural diversity in the context of institutional theory. Also, the research has some practical implications for policy makers in terms of designing policies and strategies to promote entrepreneurial activity in the current context of globalization, which favors geographical mobility and therefore, cultural diversity.

The following text aims to promote a reflection on the cultural aspects of childhood development featured in the movie "Babies" (2010), in which the growth of four babies from different nationalities until theycomplete one year of life is accompanied. The reflection counts on the childhood conceptions according to Campos (2008), Carvalho (2010), Christensen (2005), Corsaro (2009), Javeau (2005), Kohan (2003) andSarmento (2004), which were related to the aspects of the movie. This text is also constituted of two axis: each one corresponds to babies represented in a rural area - Bayar in Mongolia and Ponijao in Namibia -; and in anurban space - Hattie in the United States and Mari in Japan. The movie is timeless, and it is a childhood portrait of multiple nationalities, in which the cultural diversity is part of the narrative, showing so common childhoodstimulations and habits, and yet, so different. Through it an exemplification of theoretical aspects seen in practice is available, as well as it remits us to an esthetics experience. “Babies” gives a lesson of children observation andreveals how the cultural aspects and the context of these individuals should be taken into account when they are considered research subjects.; http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/1980-4512.2014n30p116O presente texto tem como objetivo promover uma reflexão sobre os aspectos culturais no desenvolvimento da infância caracterizado no filme “Babies” (2010)...

This study assesses managerial perceptions of the management of cultural diversity and workplace transformation in three production companies in Gauteng. A sample comprising 668 employees was drawn from a population of 1 259 (53% response rate) using simple random sampling and data were collected through self-developed questionnaires and personal interviews. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicate that whilst the South African Transformation (SAT) Agenda has propelled change in the political and economic spheres, similar developments have not been realised in the South African labour market. Hence, based on the findings, recommendations are made to enhance the management of cultural diversity and workplace transformation, and the need for urgent government intervention, through legislative amendments, is emphasised.
