Design engineering projects are reliant on collaborative effort among multiple individuals and/or departments through sharing experiments and data and collaboration on analysis of data and results. Information literacy is one of the competencies that design engineering students are expected to acquire through these courses, given that fact that students with an undergraduate Engineering degree will be at the entry level as professional engineers, the skills and tools they learn through their education will be their success keys in their profession, but the question is what information practice skills and tools that the industry expects that our students have acquired during design engineering courses and what are the information practice skills that students need to learn to meet employers’ expectations?. This paper provides an overview of collaborative information practice and what role that librarians can do through the life cycle of a design engineering course.

This paper relates our experience at the Engineering & Science Library at Queen’s University, melding Library resources into the design engineering curriculum in the Faculty of Applied Science. Effective library support of design engineering comprises people, curriculum, collections and assessment. Moreover, effective support is seamless and fully embedded in the design students’ learning over time. We discuss our experience to date and identify areas for future growth.

The paper presents an investigation of wiki technology as a teaching tool in a team mine design engineering course where students were required to develop an article on a selected design topic. The case study presents how the appropriate platform was selected through collaboration between the course instructor and the engineering librarian and the approach used in evaluating learners’ experience using this technology for their first time in an academic course. The paper also reports and discusses some of the challenges that were faced during the course, in addition to the lessons learned to guide the development of the wiki for future years.

The undergraduate program in Product Design Engineering at EAFIT University-Colombia, includes an applied project course during eight semesters with different topics -- Students attend their last project course in seventh and eighth semester integrated into one year topic -- In this project, they have to design a new high-tech consumer product in electrical mobility for different types of transportation need and to construct a completely functional prototype -- The objectives of these courses are to focus on the triad of ???Product-User-Context??? as well as to foster design, engineering, manufacturing, management and entrepreneurship skills -- In order to offer a systematic way of working, and to obtain better results, a systematic design methodology has been adopted, adapted and applied during the whole product development process in order to facilitate representation, analysis, calculation, management and control of the information related to the product -- The methodology is broadly explained through activities, tools, information and results related to four main stages: 1) Need research & problem statement, 2) Conceptual design, 3) Detailed design and 4) Prototype construction & testing -- A successful case study is presented following all the stages of the presented methodology for the development of an Electric Power-Assisted Bicycle

Functional physical prototyping, in academic projects, has demonstrated to be an excellent way to validate and evaluate new ideas according to practical experience at the Product Design Engineering Department from EAFIT University located in Colombia -- This practical approach is very efficient in product design and development process learning, rather than only theoretical courses -- Teams of students, of product engineering design, are faced to the challenge of designing innovative new products, according to identified real needs, always taking into account the user and the context -- In order to take this process to a new level, it has been decided to integrate different challenges into a novel scheme to design value added products, specifically in the design area of innovative electric vehicles -- This kind of projects represents a great opportunity from social, economical, technical and environmental interests in Colombia, as electric vehicles became a main interest of several companies and local authorities -- It is worth noticed that Colombia is a developing country with a large amount of clean energy, as almost 80% of produced energy at national level comes from hydropower, being a good scenario to observe the real impact of zero-emission characteristics of the electric vehicles -- A successful academic case study for the development of the functional prototype of a small cargo vehicle for indoor applications is presented in order to show the experiences obtained with this kind of initiatives

Engineering design is a knowledge intensive process -- Experts??? experiences from different product life-cycle stages play a key role in problem solving during design decision making by linking up knowledge to find better solutions for a specific design problem -- Different approaches have been used to support Collaborative and Concurrent Product Design, such as Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) modelling -- Additionally, due to the need of capitalizing these experiences, the Set of Experience Knowledge Structure (SOEKS) is used to store and manage experiences of decision making process -- However it was necessary to adapt the structure to property manage the constraints approach used in Engineering Design -- This article presents a proposed adaptation to SOEKS structure in order to be able to store and reuse CSP design experiences for further re-use and analysis of multiple experiences -- Finally, a case study is presented in order to show how the proposed approach can be used in the industrial application

Knowledge sharing among partners in collaborative and concurrent engineering processes is becoming more critical for decision-making in Product Design Engineering (PDE) -- The approach presented in this article proposes a Fuzzy Logic (FL) based semi-automatic support for reaching agreements in the definition of variable???s domain under a Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) modelling process -- A negotiation model is proposed, including suggestions about preferred domains for a variable that it is used for more than one expert -- Competence of the users involved in the negotiation is measured with a set of developed indexes -- A Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) is used to calculate user???s indexes and suggestions about the domain are made based on the proposed domains and competence index of the experts -- The proposal is included in a Multi-Agent System (MAS) for supporting distributed knowledge modelling
