This paper identifies some of the most prominent issues present in today’s digital repository systems, which hinder the long-term preservation of digital materials. In order to address some of those issues, we propose the CRiB system, a service oriented architecture (SOA) supported by Web services’ technology, which will enable institutions to outsource part of the functionality that is necessary to carry out effective long-term digital preservation. The proposed system delivers a set of services that client applications will be able to invoke in order to perform complex format migrations; evaluate the outcome of those migrations according to multiple criteria (e.g. data loss and performance); and obtain detailed migration reports for documenting the preservation intervention.; Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)

One of the important procedures during the operation of an Institutional Repository System (IRS) is to categorize and index the submitted digital objects. Based on current practice, human catalogers are frequently involved in this process to make accurate categorization. Funded by NLM development grant, we are developing an UMLS-based indexing tool. The tool will be integrated or plug-in into most IRS, and categorize and assign MeSH headings and keywords to text-based digital objects automatically. The project has been supported under NLM Knowledge Management & Applied Informatics Grants (1 G08 LM008704-01)

Objective: Develop methods for automated transfer of images and associated text from a teaching-file repository into presentation material for speaker-led conferences.erials/Methods:Our institution uses a Microsoft Windows (Microsoft Corp, Redmond, WA) software application to maintain a digital teaching-file database that can store and retrieve content in a case-centric fashion. Virtually any number of images can be stored with any given case. Cases and their associated images can be retrieved via a module that supports searches by American College of Radiology (ACR) code and by free-text Boolean queries on the history, findings, diagnosis, and discussion components of a case. In addition to the software system serving directly as an interactive teaching tool, the digital teaching file itself serves as an image repository and resource for attending radiologists who create their own presentations and lectures. To better support this use, software modules were developed for interprocess communication and automated creation of Powerpoint slides. These modules are fully integrated with the teaching-file software application. A single image or a set of selected images can be automatically made into individual slides with two mouse clicks. Images are automatically centered and optimally sized. A slide title is automatically rendered from the user’s preference of the case history or diagnosis (stored with the case)...

The project was setup to develop a process for submission, sustainable storage, and reproduction, of image collections within the RIFF environment, which will provide the higher education community with greater resources and capabilities for the utilization of digital media. The project will address the issues of, mapping image collection metadata to the standard NLA METS profile, as well as and fundamental presentation functionality for user interaction with image collections. Initially image collections where to be referred to as “Image Albums”, however this was latter dropped by the NLA committee. To demonstrate the presentation of image collections, templates where developed in Manakin by ANU, and the iSpheres repository system developed a connector allowing access to Dspace objects and metadata via web services. By this means, objects from Dspace and other repositories, may be presented throguh custom web and desktop applications. The project was scheduled to be complete in 2007 and will be demonstrated at the Clever Collections conference in November.; This report provides details of the workflow required to enable submission, storage and reproduction of image collections within the APSR RIFF environment. This was done to provide the higher education community with greater resources and capabilities for the utilization of digital media. To demonstrate the presentation of image collections...

This presentation was given at the 2006 Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America, in Philadelphia, Pa., October 22-25, 2006.; The National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program Act of 2005 was signed into law as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005. The new law arrived at a propitious time. Many federal and state geological repositories are at capacity. A poll of state geological surveys revealed that two-thirds of them have less than 10% space remaining. Many state repositories are gaining additional, but temporary and substandard space, using ocean-going containers or offsite warehouses, where access is limited and conditions are poor. Nearly half the repositories refuse to accept samples, while others are selective with the samples that they do accept. The Act authorizes a federally-supported, distributed repository system to contain “geologic, geophysical, and engineering data, maps, well logs, and samples” accessed through a national, web-based catalog. Administration of the system will be through the U.S. Geological Survey, advised by a Federal Advisory Committee (FAC), and in association with the state geological surveys. The Act authorizes $30 million for each of five years. In January 2006, the FAC established a data preservation working group to draft an implementation plan that was submitted to Congress in August of 2006. Included in the plan is creation of a National Digital Catalog...

The Center for Biological Research Collections (CBRC) at Indiana University (http://www.indiana.edu/~cbrc/) is a consortium of research collections including botany, zooarchaeology, and paleontology collections. This group is digitizing biological specimens to make them available online for teaching and research. Some of these specimens will be digitized as 2-dimensional photographic images while others, particularly bone specimens, are being digitized in 3D to allow for manipulation and visualization in a standard web browser. The Libraries are teaming up with CBRC to help store these collections in a variety of file formats, along with accompanying metadata. The CBRC uses a pre-existing metadata management system called Specify (http://specifysoftware.org/) and we are working to bring the metadata in that system together with repository software we use (Hydra/Fedora) to ensure these digitized items can be archived and managed for the long-term, as well as made discoverable and accessible online. Join us to learn about this work, see some 3D content in action, and have some fun with science!

Folksonomies - large databases arising from collaborative tagging of items by independent users - are becoming an increasingly important way of categorizing information. In these systems users can tag items with free words, resulting in a tripartite item-tag-user network. Although there are no prescribed relations between tags, the way users think about the different categories presumably has some built in hierarchy, in which more special concepts are descendants of some more general categories. Several applications would benefit from the knowledge of this hierarchy. Here we apply a recent method to check the differences and similarities of hierarchies resulting from tags given by independent individuals and from tags given by a centrally managed repository system. The results from out method showed substantial differences between the lower part of the hierarchies, and in contrast, a relatively high similarity at the top of the hierarchies.; Comment: 10 pages

This paper describes the aDORe repository architecture, designed and implemented for ingesting, storing, and accessing a vast collection of Digital Objects at the Research Library of the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The aDORe architecture is highly modular and standards-based. In the architecture, the MPEG-21 Digital Item Declaration Language is used as the XML-based format to represent Digital Objects that can consist of multiple datastreams as Open Archival Information System Archival Information Packages (OAIS AIPs).Through an ingestion process, these OAIS AIPs are stored in a multitude of autonomous repositories. A Repository Index keeps track of the creation and location of all the autonomous repositories, whereas an Identifier Locator registers in which autonomous repository a given Digital Object or OAIS AIP resides. A front-end to the complete environment, the OAI-PMH Federator, is introduced for requesting OAIS Dissemination Information Packages (OAIS DIPs). These OAIS DIPs can be the stored OAIS AIPs themselves, or transformations thereof. This front-end allows OAI-PMH harvesters to recurrently and selectively collect batches of OAIS DIPs from aDORe, and hence to create multiple, parallel services using the collected objects. Another front-end...

After two decades of repository development, some conclusions may be drawn as to which type of repository and what kind of service best supports digital scholarly communication, and thus the production of new knowledge. Four types of publication repository may be distinguished, namely the subject-based repository, research repository, national repository system and institutional repository. Two important shifts in the role of repositories may be noted. With regard to content, a well-defined and high quality corpus is essential. This implies that repository services are likely to be most successful when constructed with the user and reader uppermost in mind. With regard to service, high value to specific scholarly communities is essential. This implies that repositories are likely to be most useful to scholars when they offer dedicated services supporting the production of new knowledge. Along these lines, challenges and barriers to repository development may be identified in three key dimensions: a) identification and deposit of content; b) access and use of services; and c) preservation of content and sustainability of service. An indicative comparison of challenges and barriers in some major world regions such as Europe, North America and East Asia plus Australia is offered in conclusion.

The prototype of a workflow system for the submission of content to a digital object repository is here presented. It is based entirely on open-source standard components and features a service-oriented architecture. The front-end consists of Java Business Process Management (jBPM), Java Server Faces (JSF), and Java Server Pages (JSP). A Fedora Repository and a mySQL data base management system serve as a back-end. The communication between front-end and back-end uses a SOAP minimal binding stub. We describe the design principles and the construction of the prototype and discuss the possibilities and limitations of work ow creation by administrators. The code of the prototype is open-source and can be retrieved in the project escipub at http://sourceforge.net

The University of Virginia received a grant of $1,000,000 from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to enable the Library, in collaboration with Cornell University, to build a digital object repository system based on the Flexible Extensible Digital Object and Repository Architecture (Fedora). The new system demonstrates how distributed digital library architecture can be deployed using web-based technologies, including XML and Web services. The new system is designed to be a foundation upon which interoperable web-based digital libraries can be built. Virginia and collaborating partners in the US and UK will evaluate the system using a diverse set of digital collections. The software will be made available to the public as an open-source release.

Interoperability is one of the main issues in creating a networked system of digital libraries. However, the interoperability as the way to accomplish data exchange and service collaboration requires adoption of a set of open standards covering all digital repository processes. The aim of this document is to revise the most important standards, protocols and the best pratices that form the framework to an open and fully interoperable digital library.; A interoperabilidade é uma das principais preocupações no desenvolvimento de sistemas de bibliotecas digitais abertas e que operam em rede.
