No segundo capítulo...

We are developing tools to help maintain a complete, accurate and timely problem list within a general purpose Electronic Medical Record system. As a part of this project, we have designed a system t o automatically retrieve medical problems from free-text documents. Here we describe an information model based on XML (eXtensible Markup Language) and compliant with the CDA (Clinical Document Architecture). This model is used to ease the exchange of clinical data between the Natural Language Understanding application that retrieves potential problems from narrative document, and the problem list management application.

Background: The growing recognition of the importance of concisely communicating research evidence and other policy-relevant information to policymakers has underpinned the development of several information-packaging efforts over the past decade. This has led to a wide variability in the types of documents produced, which is at best confusing and at worst discouraging for those they intend to reach. This paper has two main objectives: to develop a better understanding of the range of documents and document names used by the organizations preparing them; and to assess whether there are any consistencies in the characteristics of sampled documents across the names employed to label (in the title) or describe (in the document or website) them. Methods: We undertook a documentary analysis of web-published document series that are prepared by a variety of organizations with the primary intention of providing information to health systems policymakers and stakeholders, and addressing questions related to health policy and health systems with a focus on low- and middle-income countries. No time limit was set. Results: In total, 109 individual documents from 24 series produced by 16 different organizations were included. The name ‘policy brief/briefing’ was the most frequently used (39%) to label or describe a document...

This research is based on studies of Textual Linguistics and argues that the ability of making inference is part of the process of reading and comprehension process, because it is through the inference that the reader constructs new knowledge from the combination of existing data and facts in his/her memory. When considering that the textbook is a tool used by teachers in the classroom, this work had as main objective, to investigate how the authors of the textbook approach to work with the inferential ability in the collection of books most frequently adopted in Municipal Schools in Goiânia-GO, Brazil, from 6th to 9th grade in elementary school, Portuguese: language, by the authors Cereja and Magalhães (2009). This research was characterized with a mixed methodological approach, since it was performed a document and qualitative analysis and, simultaneously, quantitative data were also used. In view of the purpose of this study, the issues of understanding and interpretation of the texts in this collection were taken as object of investigation. To define the corpus, 779 questions of textual interpretation and understanding were analyzed. Data analysis was developed based on the inferential categories proposed by Marcuschi (2008) and Vidal-Abarca and Rico (2003)...

The World Bank s disaster risk management (DRM) activities utilize a range of open access and open source computational modelling tools to quantify the risk posed by natural hazards. An important goal of these activities is to build capacity among national and local governments and international development professionals working in disaster risk management. A key decision in these activities is the choice of modelling tool that will be used to address the hazard, exposure, and/or risk question under consideration. This document presents an objective analysis of freely available hazard and risk modelling software in order to facilitate selection of appropriate tools for various DRM activities. There have been previous evaluations of freely available modelling tools across various natural hazards, but this is the first multi-hazard systematic review using a set of consistent criteria. The analysis covers hazard risk models for cyclone (wind), storm surge and tsunami, earthquake, and flood.

With the explosive growth of the volume and complexity of document data (e.g., news, blogs, web pages), it has become a necessity to semantically understand documents and deliver meaningful information to users. Areas dealing with these problems are crossing data mining, information retrieval, and machine learning. For example, document clustering and summarization are two fundamental techniques for understanding document data and have attracted much attention in recent years. Given a collection of documents, document clustering aims to partition them into different groups to provide efficient document browsing and navigation mechanisms. One unrevealed area in document clustering is that how to generate meaningful interpretation for the each document cluster resulted from the clustering process. Document summarization is another effective technique for document understanding, which generates a summary by selecting sentences that deliver the major or topic-relevant information in the original documents. How to improve the automatic summarization performance and apply it to newly emerging problems are two valuable research directions. ^ To assist people to capture the semantics of documents effectively and efficiently, the dissertation focuses on developing effective data mining and machine learning algorithms and systems for (1) integrating document clustering and summarization to obtain meaningful document clusters with summarized interpretation...

This paper is a descriptive commentary concerning the use of document analysis in qualitative research concerned with developing an understanding of the role of child and adolescent mental health nursing in an inpatient. The document analysis was undertaken using thematic analysis with both an iterative process (Attride-Stirling) and an aggregative process, the Joanna Briggs Institute Thematic Analysis Program (TAP). After the initial iterative process the data were entered into an online software program, TAP, for aggregation and further analysis. The TAP software consisted of a three-step approach in the analysis of data extraction of illustrations, aggregation to categories and synthesis of categories into themes. A TAP chart was generated displaying the connections between the illustrations, categories and themes. The advantage and limitations of utilising the TAP software compared with Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software were discussed. The program afforded direct involvement by the researcher in the cognitive process of the analysis; rather than just the technical process. A limitation of the program would be the volume of the data if the research involved a vast amount of data. The TAP program was a clearly defined three-step software program that was appropriate for the documents analysis for the research. The program would have a wide application for facilitating the thematic analysis of documents...

This folio of research employed a constructivist epistemological perspective to investigate the learning designs and pedagogical considerations used by teachers to promote musical understanding within the secondary school music curriculum. The three studies were framed by the following ideas: learning and teaching through experience (John Dewey and David Kolb); learning and teaching for musical understanding (Jackie Wiggins); and designing learning that makes more likely the construction of certain understandings (Charles Reigeluth, Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe). The focus was on the teacher’s role in designing and providing learning experiences rather than on students’ actual musical learning. The first folio topic examined the role of music ensemble competitions within the secondary school music curriculum and explored student perspectives on participation in competitions. A large number of research studies from the United States have explored a range of issues surrounding music competitions. However, there are few that have examined student learning perspectives on this experience, and even fewer studies that present an Australian viewpoint on music ensemble competitions. This qualitative study tracked the views of 265 students using three questionnaires strategically positioned throughout the ensemble year. Multiple choice data were examined using frequency analysis while written responses were themed and tallied. Findings indicated that students regarded competitive performances as more significant and motivating than noncompetitive...

With the recent growth in cultural complexity, many organizations are faced with increasingly diverse employee pools. Gaining a greater understanding of the values that employees possess is the first step in effectively satisfying their needs and achieving a more productive workforce (lung & Avolio, 2000). Values playa significant role in influencing individual behaviours. It is therefore necessary to assess the qualities of employee value systems and directly link them to the values of the organization. The importance of values and value congruence has been emphasized by many organizational behaviour researchers (cf. Adkins & Caldwell, 2004; Erdogan, Kraimer, & Liden, 2004; Jung & Avolio, 2000; Rokeach, 1973); however the emphasis on value studies remains fairly stagnant within the sport industry (Amis, Slack, & Hinings, 2002). In order to examine the realities that were constructed by the participants in this study a holistic view of the impact of values within a specific sport organization were provided. The purpose of this case study was to examine organizational and employee values to understand the effects of values and value congruence on employee behaviours within the context of a large Canadian sport organization. A mUltiple methods case study approach was adopted in order to fully serve the purpose and provide a comprehensive view of the organization being examined. Document analysis...

Document networks are characteristic in that a document node, e.g. a webpage or an article, carries meaningful content. Properties of document networks are not only affected by topological connectivity between nodes, but also strongly influenced by the semantic relation between content of the nodes. We observe that document networks have a large number of triangles and a high value of clustering coefficient. And there is a strong correlation between the probability of formation of a triangle and the content similarity among the three nodes involved. We propose the degree-similarity product (DSP) model which well reproduces these properties. The model achieves this by using a preferential attachment mechanism which favours the linkage between nodes that are both popular and similar. This work is a step forward towards a better understanding of the structure and evolution of document networks.; Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

This report describes the MUDOS-NG summarization system, which applies a set of language-independent and generic methods for generating extractive summaries. The proposed methods are mostly combinations of simple operators on a generic character n-gram graph representation of texts. This work defines the set of used operators upon n-gram graphs and proposes using these operators within the multi-document summarization process in such subtasks as document analysis, salient sentence selection, query expansion and redundancy control. Furthermore, a novel chunking methodology is used, together with a novel way to assign concepts to sentences for query expansion. The experimental results of the summarization system, performed upon widely used corpora from the Document Understanding and the Text Analysis Conferences, are promising and provide evidence for the potential of the generic methods introduced. This work aims to designate core methods exploiting the n-gram graph representation, providing the basis for more advanced summarization systems.; Comment: Technical Report

The constitution of heritage as an institutional practice has interested researchers since the eighteenth century and it is still a very controversial field. Many issues concerning preservationist actions were discussed in which the normative criteria of these practices were more extensively considered than the understanding of the methodological and bureaucratic mechanisms necessary for their existence. Therefore, we propose in this study to stress the importance of the documental production universe in the institutional patrimonialization aiming to show the value that is assigned to the documentation that ensures the listing of buildings as a material expression.; A constituição do patrimônio como prática institucional tem chamado a atenção de estudiosos desde o século XVIII e ainda é um campo bastante polêmico, pois muitas questões em torno das ações preservacionistas foram discutidas levando em conta mais os critérios normativos destas práticas do que a compreensão dos mecanismos metodológicos e burocráticos necessários para sua existência.

Machine learning algorithms have been successfully utilized in various systems/devices. They have the ability to improve the usability/quality of such systems in terms of intelligent user interface, fast performance, and more importantly, high accuracy. In this research, machine learning techniques are used in the field of image understanding, which is a common research area between image analysis and computer vision, to involve higher processing level of a target image to "make sense" of the scene captured in it. A general probabilistic framework for image understanding where topics associated with (i) collection of images to generate a comprehensive and valid database, (ii) generation of an unbiased ground-truth for the aforesaid database, (iii) selection of classification features and elimination of the redundant ones, and (iv) usage of such information to test a new sample set, are discussed. Two research projects have been developed as examples of the general image understanding framework; identification of region(s) of interest, and image segmentation evaluation. These techniques, in addition to others, are combined in an object-oriented rendering system for printing applications. The discussion included in this doctoral dissertation explores the means for developing such a system from an image understanding/ processing aspect. It is worth noticing that this work does not aim to develop a printing system. It is only proposed to add some essential features for current printing pipelines to achieve better visual quality while printing images/photos. Hence...

We present a document understanding system in which the arrangement of lines of text and block separators within a document are modeled by stochastic context free grammars. A grammar corresponds to a document genre; our system may be adapted to a new genre simply by replacing the input grammar. The system incorporates an optical character recognition system that outputs characters, their positions and font sizes. These features are combined to form a document representation of lines of text and separators. Lines of text are labeled as tokens using regular expression matching. The maximum likelihood parse of this stream of tokens and separators yields a functional labeling of the document lines. We describe business card and business letter applications.; "The Recognition Strategy Language," Eighth International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition.
