Ghost free dual vector theories in 2+1 dimensions

We explore here the issue of duality versus spectrum equivalence in dual theories generated through the master action approach. Specifically we examine a generalized self-dual (GSD) model where a Maxwell term is added to the self-dual model. A gauge embedding procedure applied to the GSD model leads to a Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) theory with higher derivatives. We show here that the latter contains a ghost mode contrary to the original GSD model. By figuring out the origin of the ghost we are able to suggest a new master action which interpolates between the local GSD model and a nonlocal MCS model. Those models share the same spectrum and are ghost free. Furthermore, there is a dual map between both theories at classical level which survives quantum correlation functions up to contact terms. The remarks made here may be relevant for other applications of the master action approach.

The existence of an interpolating master action does not guarantee the same spectrum for the interpolated dual theories. In the specific case of a generalized self-dual (GSD) model defined as the addition of the Maxwell term to the self-dual model in D = 2 + 1, previous master actions have furnished a dual gauge theory which is either nonlocal or contains a ghost mode. Here we show that by reducing the Maxwell term to first order by means of an auxiliary field we are able to define a master action which interpolates between the GSD model and a couple of non-interacting Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories of opposite helicities. The presence of an auxiliary field explains the doubling of fields in the dual gauge theory. A generalized duality transformation is defined and both models can be interpreted as self-dual models. Furthermore, it is shown how to obtain the gauge invariant correlators of the non-interacting MCS theories from the correlators of the self-dual field in the GSD model and vice-versa. The derivation of the non-interacting MCS theories from the GSD model, as presented here, works in the opposite direction of the soldering approach.

Each model is of first, second, and third-order in derivatives. Here we derive a new self-dual model of fourth-order, L(SD)((4)), which follows from the third-order model (linearized topologically massive gravity) via Noether embedment of the linearized Weyl symmetry. In fact, each self-dual model can be obtained from the previous one L(SD)((i)) -> L(SD)((i+1)), i = 1, 2, 3 by the Noether embedment of an appropriate gauge symmetry, culminating in L(SD)((4)). The new model may be identified with the linearized version of L(HDTMG) = epsilon(mu nu rho)Gamma(epsilon)(mu gamma) [partial derivative(nu)Gamma(gamma)(epsilon rho) + (2/3)Gamma(gamma)(nu delta)Gamma(delta)(rho epsilon)]/8m + root-g[R(mu nu)R(nu mu) - 3R(2)/8]/2m(2). We also construct a master action relating the third-order self-dual model to L(SD)((4)) by means of a mixing term with no particle content which assures spectrum equivalence of L(SD)((4)) to other lower-order self-dual models despite its pure higher derivative nature and the absence of the Einstein-Hilbert action. Some properties of the higher grading integrable generalizations of the conformal affine Toda systems are studied. The fields associated to the non-zero grade generators are Dirac spinors. The effective action is written in terms of the Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten (WZNW) action associated to an affine Lie algebra, and an off-critical theory is obtained as the result of the spontaneous breakdown of the conformal symmetry. Moreover, the off-critical theory presents a remarkable equivalence between the Noether and topological currents of the model. Related to the off-critical model we define a real and local lagrangian provided some reality conditions are imposed on the fields of the model. This real action model is expected to describe the soliton sector of the original model, and turns out to be the master action from which we uncover the weak-strong phases described by (generalized) massive Thirring and sine-Gordon type models, respectively. The case of any (untwisted) affine Lie algebra furnished with the principal gradation is studied in some detail. The example of s^l(n) (n = 2, 3) is presented explicitly. © SISSA/ISAS 2003.

This transformation is then made symmetric and cast as a self-duality that maps the original theory into itself with the role of particles and vortices interchanged. After defining the transformation for a pure Chern-Simons gauge theory, we show how to embed it into (a sector of) the (2 + 1)-dimensional ABJM model, and argue that this duality can be understood as being related to 4-dimensional Maxwell duality in the AdS(4) x CP3 bulk.

We give a non-perturbative completion of a class of closed topological string theories in terms of building blocks of dual open strings. In the specific case where the open string is given by a matrix model these blocks correspond to a choice of integration contour. We then apply this definition to the AGT setup where the dual matrix model has logarithmic potential and is conjecturally equivalent to Liouville conformal field theory. By studying the natural contours of these matrix integrals and their monodromy properties, we propose a precise map between topological string blocks and Liouville conformal blocks. Remarkably, this description makes use of the light-cone diagrams of closed string field theory, where the critical points of the matrix potential correspond to string interaction points.; Mathematics; Physics

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES); We study 4D N = 2 superconformal field theories that arise from the compactification of 6D N = (2, 0) theories of type D-N on a Riemann surface, in the presence of punctures twisted by a Z(2) outer automorphism. Unlike the untwisted case, the family of SCFTs is in general parametrized, not by M-g,M-n, but by a branched cover thereof. The classification of these SCFTs is carried out explicitly in the case of the D-4 theory, in terms of three-punctured spheres and cylinders, and we provide tables of properties of twisted punctures for the D-5 and D-6 theories. We find realizations of Spin(8) and Spin(7) gauge theories with matter in all combinations of vector and spinor representations with vanishing beta-function, as well as Sp(3) gauge theories with matter in the 3-index traceless antisymmetric representation.

We describe how to do a complete classification of these SCFTs in terms of three-punctured spheres and cylinders, which we do explicitly for A(3), and provide tables of properties of twisted defects up through A(9). We find atypical degenerations of Riemann surfaces that do not lead to weakly-coupled gauge groups, but to a gauge coupling pinned at a point in the interior of moduli space.As applications, we study: i) 6D representations of 4D superconformal quivers in the shape of an affine/non-affine D-n Dynkin diagram, ii) S-duality of SU(4) and Sp(2) gauge theories with various combinations of fundamental and antisymmetric matter, and iii) realizations of all rank-one SCFTs predicted by Argyres and Wittig.

La dualidad entre teorías de gravedad y teorías de campos de gauge es una de las ideas que más ha influido en el desarrollo de la física teórica de altas energías en la última decada. Hoy en día, esta se ha convertido en una poderosa herramienta en el estudio de sistemas fuertemente interactuantes. Sin embargo, la correspondencia AdS/CFT no ha sido probada completamente y aún se encuentra al nivel de conjetura. En este trabajo pretendemos chequear la correspondencia en algunos casos simples. Concretamente, calculamos funciones de correlación de tres y cuatro puntos en teoría de supercuerdas sobre AdS3 X S3 X T4 a nivel árbol para operadores primarios quirales y mostramos que estas coinciden perfectamente con los correladores esperados en la teoría de campos dual. Además sugerimos una interesante conexión entre funciones de correlación de n puntos de operadores con número de torcimiento (twist) igual a dos y espín muy grande y valores de expectacion de loops de Wilson poligonales con lados nulos en teoría de Super-Yang-Mills con cuatro super-simetrías. In this note, we explore the relation between crossing symmetry and modular invariance in conformal field theory and S-duality in gauge theory. It is shown that partition functions of different S dual theories of N=2 SU(2) gauge theory with four fundamentals can be derived from the crossing symmetry of the Liouville four point function. In this thesis, we present two aspects of higher-spin gauge field theories: dualities and interactions. We first consider dualities of the free theories at the level of the action. Then, external "electric" and "magnetic" sources are introduced a la Dirac, which leads to a quantization condition on the product of conserved "electric" and "magnetic" higher-spin charges. In the second part, higher-spin interactions are studied in the field-antifield (or BRST) formalism. Theorems are proved about local interactions of sets of exotic spin-two fields, as well as of sets of symmetric spin-three fields. Some consistent first-order vertices are obtained. Compactification of Type IIB superstring on an $AdS_5 \times S^5/\Gamma$ background leads to SU(N) gauge field theories with prescribed matter representations. In the 't Hooft limit of large N such theories are conformally finite. I review recent work on the holographic relation between higher-spin theories in Anti-de Sitter spaces and conformal field theories. I present the main results of studies concerning the higher-spin holographic dual of the three-dimensional O(N) vector model. I discuss the special role played by certain double-trace deformations in Conformal Field Theories that have higher-spin holographic duals. Using the canonical formulation I show that duality transformations in a U(1) gauge theory on AdS4 induce boundary double-trace deformations. I argue that a similar effect takes place in the holography of linearized higher-spin theories on AdS4.; Comment: 19 pages. This is a general introduction to electric-magnetic duality in non-abelian gauge theories. In chapter I, I review the general ideas which led in the late 70s to the idea of electric/magnetic duality in quantum field theory. In chapters II and III, I focus mainly on N=2 supersymmetric theories. I present the lagrangians and explain in more or less detail the non-renormalization theorems, rigid special geometry, supersymmetric instanton calculus, charge fractionization, the semiclassical theory of monopoles, duality in Maxwell theory and the famous Seiberg-Witten solution. I discuss various physical applications, as electric charge confinement, chiral symmetry breaking or non-trivial superconformal theories in four dimensions. In Section II.3 new material is presented, related to the computation of the eta invariant of certain Dirac operators coupled minimally to non-trivial monopole field configurations. I explain how these invariants can be obtained exactly by a one-loop calculation in a suitable N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory. This is an unexpected application of the holomorphy properties of N=2 supersymmetry, and constitutes a tremendous simplification of the usual computation.
