Strategic management as an academic field of study has spanned over four decades. As an interdisciplinary subject that enjoys concurrent contributions by allied disciplines such as economics and social science, numerous industries have benefited from applying tools and concepts developed within strategic management that are subsequently tailored to match their specific contexts. Strangely, although postured as one of the oldest and largest industries, the construction industry has largely chosen to omit the relevance of the subject in daily business operations. This is especially true in the United States, compared to the British who have embarked on such studies as early as the 1970s. Recent literatures have commented on inadequate management knowledge and systems perspective of civil engineers as they rise through the ranks and shoulder higher responsibilities of management. This is manifested by lackluster performance and failure of several international construction firms sampled in this research, the causes of which were least attributed to technical engineering issues and project management aspects. This doctoral research aims to bridge the knowledge gap in strategy and formulates a conceptual model suited for construction. It is well known that irregular topography can substantially affect the amplitude and frequency characteristics of seismic motion. Macroseismic observations of destructive earthquakes often show higher damage intensity at the tops of hills, ridges and canyons than at lower elevations and on flat areas. Systematic seismic motion amplification over convex topographies has been confirmed by instrumental studies and also predicted by theoretical and numerical simulations of wave diffraction. Nonetheless, for the most part, the former have been limited to weak motion data and the later have treated topographic asperities as simple geometric irregularities on the surface of homogeneous, linearly elastic halfspaces. Despite the qualitative agreement between theory and observations on topography effects, there is still much uncertainty concerning the actual severity of amplification near topographic irregularities, inasmuch as predictive methods are still lacking on the quantitative aspects of seismic amplification near such features. Focusing of seismic rays by convex topographies does play a significant role as shown theoretically, yet it is not the only physical phenomenon involved. Understanding and shaping the relationship between supply chain management and the natural environment is critical not only to human health and the environment, but to the future success of business. While the cumulative environmental impacts of industrial production are best addressed at the supply chain level, little research has connected the overall context of supply chain management, including the characteristics of environmental pressures and market drivers, to a general approach for developing operational supply chain processes that may deliver environmental and economic performance improvements. Findings from a series of semi-structured interviews indicate that there are four sources of environmental pressure currently affecting supply chain management in unique ways. These include regulations, customer demands, resources, and ethical responsibility. Corporations that are better able to identify and understand these impacts will be better positioned to address them strategically. A framework of supply chain environmental excellence is presented to illustrate how corporations may integrate environmental operating models, operational objectives, and new supply chain processes into a comprehensive corporate strategy.; (cont.) History states that architects and engineers rarely operate in a peaceful environment as each have their own specific agendas to fulfill. The architect appeals to the plastic form of a building before tending to its structural behavior while the engineer tends towards the opposite. While both are striving for a workable structure, their priorities are mismatched. Bridge building, through history usually was considered an engineering feat as it was strictly constructed to traverse a crevasse, waterway or some other obstacle. In the United States, the construction industry accounts for almost 75% of total raw material used. This is an obvious drain on natural resources and has a major impact on the surrounding environment. Construction materials are also responsible for a relatively large portion of the global CO2 emissions. The commercial construction industry is dominated by the use of steel and in-situ concrete as building materials. It is intuitive then, to state that these two materials and their respective production flows have a significant impact on the environment, simply because of the amount of material being produced and consumed in the building industry today. This thesis focuses on the transportation sector and its role in emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and conventional pollutant emissions. Specifically, it analyzes the potential for hydrogen based transportation, introducing this technological option within a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model of the economy. The transportation sector accounts for an important part of CO2 emissions and analyses that have imposed carbon limits on the economy have shown relatively limited reductions in transportation emissions with current technology, thus the interest in technological options that would make it economic to reduce emissions. The US Federal government has been particularly focused on developing fuel cell technology for vehicles that, when powered by hydrogen, would offer a technological solution that potentially eliminates emissions of both CO2 and other conventional pollutants from the transportation sector. This work examines the economic conditions under which such a technology might successfully compete in the market. Perhaps the greatest innovation in engineering in the last fifty years, computer software has changed the way structural engineers conduct nearly every aspect of their daily business. Computer-aided drafting, analysis, and design software are invaluable tools for any structural engineering firm. Given the growth, extensive competition, and demands of the industry, a firm cannot survive if it does not take advantage of the powers and capabilities that modem computer software offer. This thesis investigated the potential for environmental management techniques to contribute to malaria vector control in Niger, with a case study on Banizoumbou village in western Niger. Numerical modeling was used to simulate habitat modifications in the form of leveling a topographic depression, ploughing the land surface to enhance infiltration and providing barriers to surface runoff on hillslopes. The hydrologic model described by Bomblies et al. (2008) was used for the modeling investigation, calibrated using environmental observations obtained in Banizoumbou for the years 2005, 2006 and 2007. The modeling investigation showed that leveling of topographic depressions could reduce the persistence time of a pool to less than the time needed for establishment of mosquito breeding, approximately 7 days. Increasing the surface soil permeability by ploughing also reduced the persistence time of the pool but was not as effective as leveling. Therefore leveling is the recommended intervention for pools of a small to intermediate size, while ploughing would be recommended for large pools where leveling would require too much work to implement. Interception of hillslope runoff using a barrier was demonstrated to be the most effective way to prevent a pool from becoming breeding habitat. However...

An approach was developed which relates the empirical LSER solute polarity parameter, pi2Ĥ, to two more fundamental quantities: a polarizability term and a computed solvent accessible surface electrostatic term. Electrostatics computations employed dielectric field continuum models and a density functional theory (B3LYP) or efficient Hartree-Fock (HF/MIDI!) method for 90 polar and nonpolar organic solutes. Predicted pi2Ĥ values had a correlation coefficient of 0.95 and standard deviation of 0.11 relative to empirically measured values. The resulting model relies on only two fitted coefficients and has the additional advantage of potential applicability to any solute composed of C, H, N, O, S, F, C1, and Br.; Fuel formulations evolve continually, and historical experience with the fuel additives tetra-ethyl lead and methyl-tert-butyl ether (MTBE) indicates that newly proposed additives should be screened for their potential to threaten environmental resources, before they are used widely. An experimental study was performed to determine the environmental durability of the adhesive bond between fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) and concrete. The study specifically focused on freeze-thaw cycling exposure of such bonds and their ultimate strength prior and after the environmental exposure. To investigate the bond strength 84 single lap shear specimens were manufactured utilizing two different types of carbon FRP pultrued strips and three different structural adhesives for total of three FRP/adhesive combinations. Two types of concrete substrate were used: regular high strength and air-entrained concrete. The specimens were freeze-thaw cycled for three different numbers of cycles using two different freeze-thaw procedures. First freeze-thaw procedure used chloride solution (3% NaCI) as its medium; the second procedure utilized tap water. This main program was complemented by the same freeze-thaw cycling of pull-off specimens of the adhesively bonded system and dumbbell tension specimens of the three adhesives. Coefficients of thermal expansion of the three structural adhesives were also experimentally measured. Results show that the ultimate strength of the adhesive bond between FRP and concrete deteriorates measurably during freeze-thaw cycling in chloride solution. Over the last decade improvements in design technology has taken grand steps in changing the way we build the structures of tomorrow. Conventional drafting software like AutoCAD and Microstation are being challenged by tools that go beyond the two dimensional representational abilities of paper documentation and replacing it with complex three dimensional virtual construction files that are more comprehensible and offer more flexibility with respect to design and also in terms of inter-professional communication. My interest's lie in the new dialectic emerging between architects and fabricators, who ironically sit at opposite ends of the construction spectrum yet are now collaborating with the help of modern-day software. I envision these new tools as being pivotal in both reassigning the roles of design and creating a more seamless construction process. An interactive, online geographic information system (GIS) was developed to enhance the involvement of stakeholders in the public participation processes of site selection issues in the marine environment. Displaying educational material and interactive maps of relevant data, this new tool allows users to input personal preferences for the criteria they value in the siting decision, and produces a map showing the most and least suitable sites according to the user's weighting of the criteria. Current decision-making processes focus on finding an optimum solution from a number of alternatives using an objective analysis of the criteria, but are often inaccessible to many stakeholders, and do not consider the fairness of the outcome to the stakeholders. This tool is intended to educate stakeholders and enhance their involvement in the public decision-making process. To demonstrate the interactive, online GIS concept, a website called eSite was assembled, using as its case study the hypothetical issue of siting marine reserves within the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.
