This study examined ethnic and language group differences on dimensions of parent-rated and teacher-rated parent involvement after adjusting for the influence of family socioeconomic factors. A total of 179 teachers and 481 parents provided information on parent school involvement for a sample of ethnically and linguistically diverse first-grade children attending one of three school districts in Texas. Four groups were examined: White, Black, Hispanic-English speaking, and Hispanic-Spanish speaking. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis supported four parent-reported involvement dimensions (positive perceptions about school, communication, parent-teacher shared responsibility, and parent school-based involvement) and three teacher-reported dimensions (alliance, general parent involvement, and teacher initiation of involvement). Data generally supported the hypothesized ethnic and language group differences in parent involvement and the moderating effect of dimension of parent involvement on group differences. Implications for school psychologists are discussed.

Maternal health remains one of the top priorities of the Government of Indonesia (GoI) and the Ministry of Health (MoH) because reductions in maternal mortality have been slows. The current Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) for Indonesia is 228 but with existing programs and interventions the government does not believe it will be able to achieve its stated millennium development goal of 102 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births by 2015. There are positive trends in an increased use of skilled birth attendants, almost universal access to some level of antenatal care and continued use of family planning but these are not enough to stem the tide of maternal death. Interventions by the skilled birth attendants in many cases are not in line with existing standards and prove to be ineffective in trying to address the emergence of complications. Antenatal care is important, but it is not where gains in decreased mortality will be obtained. The continued use of traditional birth attendants (TBA) and delivering at home are contributory factors to maternal mortality in Indonesia. In collecting data from verbal autopsies in three districts...

The objective of the Project is to assist the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, through Save the Children UK on behalf of International Save the Children Alliance acting under the coordination of the Early Childhood Education Department of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) in establishing an enabling environment in the poorest and most vulnerable communities, and providing young children the opportunities to develop to their full potential. All communes in three selected provinces of project locations (Quang Tri, Yen Bai and Dien Bien) face food insecurity, limited access to markets, limited provision of basic infrastructures, poor health, inadequate education, high illiteracy, and environmental degradation. Despite the challenging contextual environment in which this grant has taken place, the grant objectives were largely highly satisfactorily met and fulfilled though four key intermediate project results: increased access and availability of early childhood care and development services and supplies; increased quality of early childhood care and development services (Health and Education); increased family and community awareness and capacity to promote utilization of early childhood care and development services; and improved implementation of policies in support of ethnic minority children.

Children today consume more energy than they expend, the increasing sedentary nature of our lives is exacerbated by the increasing numbers of ‘time poor’ parents and by the availability of convenience foods, high in saturated fats and sugar. In devising initiatives for children, it must be understood that they develop their attitudes toward lifestyle in a number of settings. They are members of a family, students at school, peers among their friends and in the eyes of the media they are consumers. Thus, messages about healthy lifestyles can easily be undermined if one setting contradicts the others. At the Federal level the promotion of physical activity has been greatly advanced. The implementation of a required minimum linked to the latest funding legislation, coupled with a vast increase in funding for physical activity outside school hours, has worked to place physical education as a high priority within the school environment. In relation to nutrition and healthy eating, real action has occurred within the state sphere of influence. New South Wales was the first to implement a government endorsed approach to creating healthy school canteens. The Fresh Tastes initiative operates throughout the State’s school canteens and works to restrict the sale of foods high in sugar and saturated fats. Queensland is in the process of phasing this policy in and the Australian Capital Territory is seriously considering its implementation. However...

The present study uses observational assessment of 66 two-parent families working and playing together when their eldest child is in kindergarten and again in 9th grade to identify distinct patterns of family functioning derived from structural family systems theory. Whereas concurrent assessment of the relationship between family type and adolescents' school behavior were not significant, significant prospective longitudinal relationships between family type assessed in early childhood and 9th grade school behavior were indicated. Kindergarteners whose families were primarily characterized by a strong mother-child alliance were less academically competent, more aggressive/inattentive, and more anxious/depressed/withdrawn at school nine years later when they were in 9th grade, than their peers in more cohesive or father-child allied families.

The second of these conferences helped launch a new Center for Children's Health and the Environment at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. It was held in New York City on 24-25 May 1999, and was convened specifically to consider the intersection between neurodevelopmental impairment, environmental chemicals, and prevention. Over 300 health scientists, pediatricians, and public health professionals examined the growing body of evidence linking environmental toxins to neurobehavioral disorders. The conference title was Environmental Influences on Children: Brain...

Academic institutions have always found it a challenge to persuade community members to participate in academic research projects. Starting an open dialogue is usually the critical first step. To begin this dialogue with community members in Dayton, Ohio, in 1999, staff from Wright State University decided to organize a community forum, "The History of Health in Dayton." The forum was intended as the first project of a new research organization, the Alliance for Research in Community Health (ARCH), established with federal funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration in 1998. ARCH was created as a bridge between the Department of Family Medicine of Wright State University School of Medicine and the Center for Healthy Communities, a health advocacy and service organization committed to health professions education. ARCH's mission is to improve the health of citizens of Dayton through research involving community participation. Through ARCH, community members help researchers define priorities, resolve ethical issues, refine procedures, and interpret results. Guidelines for participatory research, proposed by the National Primary Care Research Group in 1998 and adopted by the alliance, emphasize the importance of open dialogue among researchers...

A presente Tese descreve e problematiza a relação família-escola.

The GCC was forged as an alliance of politically like-minded states which sought to cooperate in the face of perceptibly increasing security threats. The conflict between Iraq and Iran presented security threats to the different Gulf Arab regimes. Saudi Arabia was concerned that the war could encourage some of the smaller states to bandwagon with one of the two adversaries. The smaller Gulf states were prepared to work with Saudi Arabia in preference to the greater threat of Iraq and Iran. The Gulf Arab hereditary regimes formed an association whose launch reflected Arab and national norms by not defining itself in opposition to others and by emphasizing economic operation, not common security interests. The ideational construct of Gulf cooperation proved insufficient to overcome the statecentric rationale of maximizing national sovereignty through loose regional political cooperation and bilateral defence pacts with Washington. The increased economic weight of some of the GCC states has seen a competitive search for international prestige that has sometimes been expressed through the construct of ‘regional’ interests but is fundamentally state-leadership focused. These leaderships remain pivotal in polities largely defined by a ruling family where there is little tradition or practical capacity for devolving authority. As such a major transfer of political authority to supra-state GCC institutions also remains a far-off prospect.

The rapid transformation of urban socio-spatial landscape in China has resulted in an increasing degree of frustration and discontent among local residents who face threats of demolition and eviction. This has given rise to sporadic protests by local residents who are often known as ‘nail households’, that is, persistent protesters who are fixed to the land and hold onto their dwellings in protest against unwilling eviction and demolition of their dwellings. The presence of these protesters provides an effective example of local residents’ out cry in China. This paper is an attempt to critically re-visit the existing debates on local residents’ property rights activism in urban redevelopment processes, and to discuss the extent to which it can be an effective strategy. The paper refers to the right-to-the-city debate to examine whose right counts in China’s urban renewal contexts. It also makes use of empirical findings, both quantitative and qualitative, to examine how nail houses are received among local residents and migrants, and discusses the extent to which migrants can fit into local residents’ struggle against the top-down imposition of neighbourhood transformation. The paper ultimately calls for the need to form a place-based alliance that enables urbanites including migrants to come together to launch an effective claim on their right to the city

The thesis analyses the phenomenon of party-based Euroscepticism with specific reference to radical right parties. It provides a bridge between the literatures on party behaviour, radical right parties and the study of Euroscepticism. Challenging the notion that parties belonging to the same party family display similar positions on European integration, it argues that radical right parties do not adopt a uniform EU stance. By putting forward a typology of radical right Euroscepticism, the thesis establishes that radical right European positions differ in terms of content, strength and motivation. In explaining this divergence, the thesis adopts a framework of party strategic behaviour and argues that party positions on Europe are related to the endogeneity of the party system and the dynamics of inter party competition. In particular, the thesis shows that a radical right party’s position on European integration as well as the way in which it accommodates the European issue in its discourse is a function of the party’s wider agenda in the national party system. The latter is developed with reference to (1) party type and (2) its predominant aims and objectives at the domestic level. The thesis demonstrates that the European issue is integral to the radical right’s discursive toolkit but the ways in which the party chooses to debate the issue and/or politicise it largely depend on the national context. This thesis employs a nested research design as a mixed methods strategy joining the study of the wider universe of European radical right parties with intensive case study qualitative analysis. It commences with an overview of the general patterns and dynamics of radical right Euroscepticism both across Europe and within the political arenas where the three party case studies operate. It proceeds by providing an in depth study of three radical right parties during the period 1999-2009...
