Apresentação efectuada no Congress About Free Software in Libraries, 2, Jaume Fuster Library, Barcelona, 21 Fevereiro 2007.; Institutional repositories may be defined as information systems capable of storing, preserving and providing access to the intellectual output produced by the members of a given institution. Within the specific context of a university, an institutional repository may contribute to increase its visibility and significance within academia as it concentrates and promotes the results of research activities carried out in the organisation. Additionally, an institutional repository nourishes the ideal of an “institutional memory” by managing and preserving relevant informational items that otherwise would remain scattered, unattended or inaccessible. Closely related to concept of an institutional repository is the Open Access movement. Open Access means free online access to digital scholarly material – primarily peer-reviewed research papers, but extending also to other digital content that authors wish to make freely available to all users online [1]. Institutional repositories are considered the prime vehicle for the promotion and dissemination of such material. The Documentation Services of the University of Minho (SDUM) [2] have embraced the Open Access initiative with incommensurable passion and engaged in the implementation and promotion of its own institutional repository...

The present work conducts a performance study of virtualization tools with the aim of giving support to choose the most appropriate tool for creating virtual environments on network servers. The tools were the subject of study VMware ESXi and Citrix XenServer. Thus, benchmark tools were used to analyze the behavior of virtualized machines, creating an overload on the demand of the same basic resources such as processor, memory and disk. The tests were divided into categories based on the resources analyzed, and applied testing two guest operating systems, Windows Server 2003 and Fedora 14. For each virtualization tool, was created five virtual machines, which were conducted performance tests, first with a virtual machine, then with two machines, then three, four and finally five machines running simultaneously. With the tests completed, was observed characteristics of each virtualization tool and make an evaluation on their performance, their limitations and behavior. Where it was observed that the choice of guest operating system influences the performance of virtualization tool chosen. Thus, for virtual machines guest OS Windows 2003 Server, the tool that performs best is the comparative Citrix XenServer. For virtual machines guest OS Fedora 14 would be the best choice VMware ESXi.

A major objective of the Fedora Preservation Services Working Group (WG) is to facilitate the creation of trusted digital repositories. To accomplish this end, the Working Group is specifying the requirements and architecture for services and technologies that can be readily integrated into the Fedora Framework. In the specification process, the WG is focused on the underlying capabilities to support digital object persistence, life cycle management, multidisciplinary collections, and management of the repository environment (e.g. storage, memory, operating system, etc). This presentation will provide a WG progress report with special emphasis on the concept architecture, key features such as event management, and an early view of the development plan. The discussion will also cover how Fedora preservation services relate to PREMIS and the audit checklist for Trusted Digital Repositories.; Powerpoint presentation made at the APSR event Long-term Repositories: Taking the Shock out of the Future, August-September 2006.

This document records the process of migrating eprints.org data to a Fez repository. Fez is a Web-based digital repository and workflow management system based on Fedora (http://www.fedora.info/). At the time of migration, the University of Queensland Library was using EPrints 2.2.1 [pepper] for its ePrintsUQ repository. Once we began to develop Fez, we did not upgrade to later versions of eprints.org software since we knew we would be migrating data from ePrintsUQ to the Fez-based UQ eSpace. Since this document records our experiences of migration from an earlier version of eprints.org, anyone seeking to migrate eprints.org data into a Fez repository might encounter some small differences. Moving UQ publication data from an eprints.org repository into a Fez repository (hereafter called UQ eSpace (http://espace.uq.edu.au/) was part of a plan to integrate metadata (and, in some cases, full texts) about all UQ research outputs, including theses, images, multimedia and datasets, in a single repository. This tied in with the plan to identify and capture the research output of a single institution, the main task of the eScholarshipUQ testbed for the Australian Partnership for Sustainable Repositories project (http://www.apsr.edu.au/). The migration could not occur at UQ until the functionality in Fez was at least equal to that of the existing ePrintsUQ repository. Accordingly...

This report outlines the way in which Fez+Fedora has been developed to support the APSR RIFF Framework, by providing a standardised approach that any repository using Fez/Fedora may use to provide content stored therein in such a way that the APSR dissemination service can receive it and render it for the user. It does so by taking the objects themselves - the content and associated metadata and presenting them via a standard API (using XML notation) to the service.

Objects stored in a digital repository may be accessed, rendered or displayed in any number of ways. Images may be searched for and then viewed online; or they may be printed or downloaded as high-resolution for layout in a print magazine. Film may be streamed; data tables may be queried in situ; humans may search the repository or machines may interrogate it. There are multiple repository applications and multiple “levels” of repository: long-term archives, CVS trees, streaming servers (to name just a few). Clearly, there is a need for a standardised object or template which any dissemination mechanism could expect to receive when requesting content from a repository. Philosophically, this concept is the flip side to the APSR RIFF Submission service.; Australian Partnership for Sustainable Repositories; This report outlines the development of a standardised object or template which any dissemination mechanism could expect to receive when requesting content from a repository. The aim here was to develop a cross-platform rendering template for use with any applciation. For our purposes, the tests were conducted against Fez+Fedora. The template implementation was to be open source, standards compliant (where appropriate) and lightweight.

Generally, when we think of a digital collection or repository, we think of digital images, ebooks, audio and video files. But some important digital collections, such a bibliographies, don’t have content per se but consist of metadata describing a physical object such as a book, a digital object such as an audio recording or an event such as an opera performance. Not surprisingly, this kind of “contentless” digital object is dependent on metadata to describe it. And while we have standards for bibliographic entries in books and articles, we need more complex metadata for digital bibliographic entries. For the past several months, the Library Technology Software Development group has been working on exactly how to represent these contentless digital objects in our Fedora digital repository using the Hydra based software development environment. Using The Televised Opera and Musical Comedy Database as a sample, we will discuss the work we have done to create a general bibliographic tool for the Fedora Digital Repository.

IU's Fedora digital repository houses thousands of digitized items including pages of text, photographs, puzzles, three-dimensional artifacts, prints, audio, and moving pictures. These items are made accessible either through silo-ed collection sites or as a certain type of digital object (like images or finding aids). But there is a larger corpus of the entire repository that should be shared for greater understanding, discoverability, and use. Exposing the metadata we have in our repository allows others to make use of it, offering different perspectives on our items and collections and combining our collections with other similar collections around the world. Join us for the latest on our work to reveal our digital collections as data feeds.

The PREMIS data dictionary identifies the core preservation metadata elements required to support the long-term sustainability of digital objects. In this presentation, an overview of the current level of PREMIS support within the Fedora and DSpace repository software is provided, as well as information on how PREMIS support will be improved in later versions of the software. In addition, the importance of repository interoperability is discussed and demonstrated by using the National Library of Australia's draft METS SIP/DIP to exchange repository objects in a meaningful way between Fedora and DSpace.; Powerpoint presentation made at APSR event Long-term Repositories: Taking the Shock out of the Future, August-September 2006.

Apresentação efectuada na International Conference Open Repositories, 2, San Antonio, Texas, United States of America, 2007.; The purpose of this communication is to introduce the CRiB [18-20], a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) [21] that provides preservation services for common digital repository applications such as DSpace, Eprints or Fedora. Among those services we would like to point out the following: - A service to enable client repositories and their holding institutions to perform format migrations. The CRiB automatically combines an assortment of migration services to produce the necessary transformations between two given formats. - When migration strategies are in place, data loss or at least some sort of object degradation is expected to take place. The CRiB automatically evaluates the outcome of each object transformation in terms of conversion performance, status of the involved formats and loss of object' s significant properties. This evaluation report is used to document the preservation event [22] and to train the recommendation service (see the following point). - The CRiB provides a recommendation service that determines the optimal migration strategy within the wide range of choices, thus acting as a decision support centre for client institutions. It works by confronting the preservation requirements of each individual institution with accumulated knowledge about the behaviour of each supported converter (e.g. cost...

As the web grows and the amount of traffics on the web server increase, problems related to performance begin to appear. Some of the problems, such as the number of users that can access the server simultaneously, the number of requests that can be handled by the server per second (requests per second) to bandwidth consumption and hardware utilization like memories and CPU. To give better quality of service (\textbf{\textit{QoS}}), web hosting providers and also the system administrators and network administrators who manage the server need a benchmark application to measure the capabilities of their servers. Later, the application intends to work under Linux/Unix -- like platforms and built using Erlang/OTP R11 as a concurrent oriented language under Fedora Core Linux 5.0. \textbf{\textit{WiiBench}} is divided into two main parts, the controller section and the launcher section. Controller is the core of the application. It has several duties, such as read the benchmark scenario file, configure the program based on the scenario, initialize the launcher section, gather the benchmark results from local and remote Erlang node where the launcher runs and write them in a log file (later the log file will be used to generate a report page for the sysadmin). Controller also has function as a timer which act as timing for user inters arrival to the server. Launcher generates a number of users based on the scenario...

The Fedora architecture is an extensible framework for the storage, management, and dissemination of complex objects and the relationships among them. Fedora accommodates the aggregation of local and distributed content into digital objects and the association of services with objects. This al-lows an object to have several accessible representations, some of them dy-namically produced. The architecture includes a generic RDF-based relation-ship model that represents relationships among objects and their components. Queries against these relationships are supported by an RDF triple store. The architecture is implemented as a web service, with all aspects of the complex object architecture and related management functions exposed through REST and SOAP interfaces. The implementation is available as open-source soft-ware, providing the foundation for a variety of end-user applications for digital libraries, archives, institutional repositories, and learning object systems.; Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures Draft of submission to Journal of Digital Libraries Special Issue on Complex Objects

The University of Virginia received a grant of $1,000,000 from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to enable the Library, in collaboration with Cornell University, to build a digital object repository system based on the Flexible Extensible Digital Object and Repository Architecture (Fedora). The new system demonstrates how distributed digital library architecture can be deployed using web-based technologies, including XML and Web services. The new system is designed to be a foundation upon which interoperable web-based digital libraries can be built. Virginia and collaborating partners in the US and UK will evaluate the system using a diverse set of digital collections. The software will be made available to the public as an open-source release.
