A produção de sentidos para as obras é realizada a partir de uma orientação teórica e metodológica feminista e pós estruturalista, apresentada, principalmente, nos escritos de Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, Michel Foucault, Suely Rolnik, Rosi Braidotti, Norma Telles, Tania Swain, Margareth Rago e Michelle Perrot.; This research addresses the artistic production of Louise Bourgeois, focusing on the corporal forms expressed in in her pieces. It pertains the perception of how her art enables the possibility to criticize the phallogocentric model of feminine and, simultaneously, allows the creation of multiple forms on the women subjectivity. The production of meanings for her works is accomplished trough a theoretical and methodological feminist and post structuralist orientation, presented, mainly, in the writings of Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, Michel Foucault, Suely Rolnik, Rosi Braidotti...

Thesis (Ph. D.)--University of Rochester, Graduate Program of Visual and Cultural Studies, 2009.; This dissertation explores the home both as a theme in contemporary art by Native North American women artists and as a means to engage Native women’s art and visual culture in a critical, intercultural feminist discourse. The home is a rich and complicated site in feminist theory and women’s history; it holds additional meaning in Native cultures, where it has ties to specific cultural traditions, to homeland, and to the history of colonization. Artists working in performance, video, film, photography, and installation explore aspects of the home; of particular interest here are those works which relate to intercultural encounters between Native and non-native women. Transnationalism is introduced as a conceptual framework for analyzing home, gender, and identity in Native women’s art and visual culture. Relying heavily on feminist interpretations of transnationalism, borders, migration, diaspora, cosmopolitanism and hybridity, this dissertation addresses the multiple contexts for Native women’s identities and homes. It explores how artists present an experience of homeland and collective identity that reflects their position as global citizens whose own experiences and identities may find points of commonality with the experiences and identities of artists from other cultural...

The Little Dancer Aged Fourteen (1881) of French artist Edgar Degas (1834-1917) represents and deconstructs all at once...

The subject of this thesis is contemporary Australian sculptural practice. Within the limitations of a Master of Arts sub-thesis, it aims to provide an analysis of developments in contemporary Australian sculptural practice since 1980. This analysis is conducted within the context of the theoretical frameworks of postmodernism, feminism and postcolonialism. The first chapter seeks to establish a general overview and context, both nationally and internationally, for the significant changes and developments in contemporary sculptural practice in Australia. Specifically, three key theoretical concepts are identified as major protagonists of these changes. The second and third chapters seek to provide specific examples of these theoretical concepts identified in chapter one within the context of two monographic case studies of mid-career sculptors, Hilarie Mais and Fiona Hall.; Supervisor - Professor Sasha Grishin

This thesis explores the persistence of a ‘woman equals mother’ discourse within the terrain of reproductive politics in Australia. It finds that women are reduced to an essentialised maternal subjectivity through the deployment of an underlying ‘woman equals mother’ discourse across a range of feminist, medical/health and media discourses in Australia. Using abortion and assisted reproductive technologies (ART) as case studies, this thesis suggests that dominant feminist and mainstream discourses on abortion and ART remain located within three main frameworks, those of ‘rights/choice’, ‘moral/ethical’ and ‘health/medical’. All three discourses privilege a view of maternal subjectivity as essential to normative womanhood. While abortion and ART are often situated as separate or even opposing areas of reproductive politics, examining these two sites of reproductive practice alongside one another draws attention to the connections between these two seemingly disparate fields of reproductive practice. Specifically it enables us to identify the strength and persistence of a ‘woman equals mother’ discourse across these realms of reproductive practice. This thesis analyses the contributing factors behind the persistence of this discourse. The first three chapters in the thesis examine key feminist approaches towards abortion and ART in the late 20th and early 21st centuries...

This paper reflects on the art as a therapeutic need to mitigate the inevitable wounds of the female artist. She is usually catalogued as·“active feminist”...

De ahí que el marco proporcionado por la teoría denominada como feminismo socialista sea el más propicio para poder afrontar la interpretación y análisis de esta pieza.; ABSTRACT: This essay is an attempt to be an approach to Eulàlia Grau’s work, Discriminació de la Dona, in order to elucidate an interpretation concerning feminism, not only about social issues, as it was used to be done before, setting specific parameters about this art done with fighting awareness by some artists on those years. We seek to restore a work that goes further conceptual issues, to settle itself in a critical position towards the two oppressing forces that the artist deals with throughout this work: patriarchy and capitalism. That’s why the framework provided by the theory known as “socialist feminism” is the most suitable for to address the interpretation and analysis of this work.

This research explores the interconnections between artistic production and feminist cultural criticism, focusing on Brazilian artists Marcia X., Fernanda Magalhães and Rosângela Rennó's works of art. It shows the continuity of 'the dispositif of sexuality' in contemporary world, considered through Foucault's concepts, and it points at the feminist forms of resistance as they appear in installations, performances and artistic objects construed by a diferenciated regard, that aims at polemizing with natural truths as they are imposed in relation to female body, sexuality and subjectivity.

Starting from a feminist perspective my analyses is concerned with the way in which women video artists incorporate cultural female stereotypes into their video art. They employ a deconstructive and disruptive strategy, moving through multiple levels of irony and humour, for exposing the distortions and iniquities of stereotyped women representations that proliferate in all social arenas, from the print media, cinema, advertisement and television to the Internet.

This thesis delves into the psyche of a survivor of sexual molestation, exploring defense mechanisms, PTSD, and elusive memory in an audio and visual context. Three photographic gazes appear in this work, the dissociative gaze, the experiential gaze and the metaphoric gaze. These gazes are shown in the series In Memory of Trauma which consists of ten large Photographic prints on the gallery wall. Disarticulation is a book of images that discuss the dissociation between mind and body happening after a traumatic experience. There is also a confrontational sound installation, Confessional, that speaks to denial and self-hatred. Work by artists including Tracy Emin, Sue Williams, Harriet Hosmer, Krzysztof Wodiczko, Alfredo Jaar, Joe Spence and Rosie Martin on the subject of sexual abuse and trauma in general are discussed along with the few examples in pop culture such as David Lynch's Twin Peaks and Law and Order, SVU showing the media's portrayal of victim hood. This thesis also addresses some early ideas of Freud and his contemporaries Jean-Martin Charcot and Pierre Janet on the psychology of trauma survivors. Other theories explored are Susan Sontag's and Ulrich Baer's ideas on re-witnessing and traumatic images and Dora Apel on validation and witness...

It all began with a small, clipped image from a 1940' s Good Housekeeping magazine. There she was: a two inch tall housewife, prim in both her apron and hair style. Her arms were extended: one for balance and one with a cloth for cleaning. I took this "cleaning woman" image to Kinko ' s , the 24 -hour copy center where I spend too much time. There, I made successive photocopies and enlargements until I had a stack of grainy, obviously mechanically reproduced "drawings". Back in the studio, with a 4B charcoal pencil and paper, I vigorously drew backgrounds for the "cleaning woman" in which to do her cleanliness thing. Examples of some of the drawings are: an oil spill, rain forest foliage backed by a cityscape, and a sea turtle swimming in space near the planet Earth. In each of these drawings, I collaged a very grainy photocopy of "cleaning woman".

The series The Ephemeral Form is my attempt to communicate the ways in which women are similar in order to empower women so that they may overcome their differences creating a way for more open communication. This series of prints explore the notion of femaleness from a personal perspective and aesthetic. The main subject in each piece is the female torso as a static figure or a figure in motion. There is a specimen-like quality to the images as well as direct references to medieval panel paintings. Within each image the torso of the female is transparent revealing the biology of the figure. This is to show the viewer the similarities between the figures. On the surface of the figure in the image are markings and road maps, like scars, to represent the figure as a real being with a personal history. The image, when completed, looks very old and antiquated similar to a Medieval panel painting. I use the paintings and deteriorated quality of them as a metaphor for how I see the female body as it has been scrutinized and the idea of it has been transformed over time. These are the themes discussed in this paper. It is my intention that these works speak to how the female body is constantly revealing and concealing its self, opening up and closing off. The idea of femaleness is constantly changing...

In this thesis, the focus is on issues of identity, feminism, notions of beauty, the gendered body, and performance. I created an alter ego Lily de L'Etoile based on the Jewish Mythology of Lilith, to act as the performer in this work. Through the use of photography, video and performance I explore the notion that one's identity is formed and affected by outside factors, such as the media, and pop culture. I look at how these outside factors affect one's self-perception and permeate our lives. Key artists discussed in dialog with this work are Joan Jonas, Cindy Sherman, Libby Rowe, Orlan and Yasamasa Morimura. Judith Butler's concept of gender performativity is addressed in the work. Ideas brought up in third wave feminism by Naomi Wolf and Jessica Valenti are discussed in regards to feminism and beauty.

The conceptual subject matter of in_tension falls between two major categories: the personification of two conflicting female roles (the need to be a nurturer and the longing to be an object of sexual desire) and the amalgamation of biological and societal foundations in which we see ourselves and others. These two major categories are more principally bound by the larger schema of relations between the sexes and the molding of our desires through social conventions. My artwork tends to explore the conflict many women encounter—including myself—of which roles they wish to partake and the friction between the voyeur or the exhibitionist, the mother or the mistress, the photographer or the subject. The juxtaposition between performance and voyeurism has always been prevalent throughout my work, between familiar templates and the content within them. The friction of unresolved conflict can be found throughout the exhibition, from the Ishihara Test Series to the Sampler Series and Love Swing. Through the juxtaposing of various diverse elements, it is my intent to bring the viewer’s attention to a variety of female specific conflicts. The third-wave feminist notion of reclaiming power over cultural imperfections through mimicry and performance is a prevalent and hopefully successful strategy in my exhibition. It continues to influence my work. While it is never my intent to answer all the questions surrounding the themes of my artwork...

My thesis is an exploration of my dual desires of creation/destruction and manipulation/transformation as realized through the remediation of botanical specimens gathered from my domestic environment and transformed into works of art. Each image questions and presents an understanding of the history of botanical representation, within Western art history, as symbols of nature and femininity and the domestic skill of needlework, a traditional skill learned by women as part of the feminine. I created a conceptual dialogue with those who preceded me, intrinsically linking the acts of sewing and botany as re-interpreted feminist acts. In this work, I attempt to reveal connections between the physical transformation of the plants and the historical bind of femininity. Thread is utilized symbolically to represent the weight and impact of the history of women.

The present article introduces and contextualizes early feminist artworks which emerged in the late 1960’s up to the 1980’s.
