Mineral malnutrition stemming from undiversified plant-based diets is a top global challenge. In C3 plants (e.g., rice, wheat), elevated concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (eCO2) reduce protein and nitrogen concentrations, and can increase the total non-structural carbohydrates (TNC; mainly starch, sugars). However, contradictory findings have obscured the effect of eCO2 on the ionome—the mineral and trace-element composition—of plants. Consequently, CO2-induced shifts in plant quality have been ignored in the estimation of the impact of global change on humans. This study shows that eCO2 reduces the overall mineral concentrations (−8%, 95% confidence interval: −9.1 to −6.9, p<0.00001) and increases TNC:minerals > carbon:minerals in C3 plants. The meta-analysis of 7761 observations, including 2264 observations at state of the art FACE centers, covers 130 species/cultivars. The attained statistical power reveals that the shift is systemic and global. Its potential to exacerbate the prevalence of ‘hidden hunger’ and obesity is discussed.

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) genomes often carry one or more mutations associated with drug resistance upon transmission into a therapy-naïve individual. We assessed the prevalence and clinical significance of transmitted drug resistance (TDR) in chronically-infected therapy-naïve patients enrolled in a multi-center cohort in North America. Pre-therapy clinical significance was quantified by plasma viral load (pVL) and CD4+ cell count (CD4) at baseline. Naïve bulk sequences of HIV-1 protease and reverse transcriptase (RT) were screened for resistance mutations as defined by the World Health Organization surveillance list. The overall prevalence of TDR was 14.2%. We used a Bayesian network to identify co-transmission of TDR mutations in clusters associated with specific drugs or drug classes. Aggregate effects of mutations by drug class were estimated by fitting linear models of pVL and CD4 on weighted sums over TDR mutations according to the Stanford HIV Database algorithm. Transmitted resistance to both classes of reverse transcriptase inhibitors was significantly associated with lower CD4, but had opposing effects on pVL. In contrast, position-specific analyses of TDR mutations revealed substantial effects on CD4 and pVL at several residue positions that were being masked in the aggregate analyses...

Protection of sound management of coastal and marine areas is acknowledged as important mechanisms for alleviating poverty in the developing tropics. Tanzania has had considerable practical experience with a diversity of models that rely on private sector partnerships, community co-management regimes, and government-led initiatives for marine protection. This report outlines a vision of what a protected area system could look like in 50 years. It draws on state-of-the-art ecosystems, socioeconomic, financial, and institutional background studies, to paint a picture that emphasizes community-based adaptive co-management, within a flexible system of eight protected area networks, on of which is the Exclusive Economic Zone.

Economists have either avoided or struggled with the concept of culture and its role in economic development. Although a few theoretical works -- and even fewer empirical studies -- have appeared in the past decades, this paper tries to build on a multidisciplinary approach to review the evidence on whether and how culture matters for development. First, the paper reviews available definitions of culture and illustrates ways in which culture can change and create favorable conditions for economic development. Second, the paper discusses the challenges of separating the effect of culture from other drivers of human behavior such as incentives, the availability of information, or climate. Finally, the paper argues that globalization has led to the emergence of a set of progressive values that are common cultural traits of all developed economies.

This is a study in the art and science of fundamental systems transformation. The study is hypothesis-generative, based upon qualitative research. The cases are selected from one ongoing process of state transformation at the Arctic fringe of Europe. An indigenous rights struggle feeds into the ongoing re-constitution of the body of law. The study contributes to an ongoing re-thinking of concepts and methods in European Political and Social Sciences. The struggle for rights is also a struggle for proofs, which feeds into ongoing re-constitution of the body of knowledge. Positive findings describe my attempts to observe some possible causal mechanisms whereby the indigenous human rights movement has enjoyed some limited success in its effort to decolonize the four states that have divided and conquered Sápmi, the homeland of the Sámi (formerly known as Lapps), the only group within the EU recognized by the UN as an indigenous people. Negative findings describe my attempts to observe some limitations of my own observational capacity. Many questions of relevance to subaltern interest groups remain under-researched and under-documented: There is a great deal of colonial bias that must still be overcome, not only within European political science at large...

Thanks to digital technology we have a more surveilled society than ever. Control is in a network form, but also in narrative, graphic and conceptual form. In this article our concern is to debate how ecology and nature have become a new ground for control. And in this context, brands, corporate images, man-made environments need to face a critique better shaped by art and theory. In this way we hope to best reflect on the features of the new emerging character: the homo cypiens. As the networked world seems to link up everything and everybody there is a new human condition changed by technology. And more than ever, connections between ideas may be the answer.; RESUMEN: A causa de la tecnología digital nos encontramos en una sociedad más vigilada que nunca.

From our origins, the human being has respected his natural surroundings for his own survival. Unless certain cultures, who still survive into their original environment, we have been distanced from the heartbeat of the earth (earthbeat). Art, as any ecological action, can help us to become aware. Since the late nineteenth century, until the mid-sixties ecological movements have been developed in defense of the natural spaces and sustainable actions within the urban environment. We research collective actions that reforest brownfields and create urban gardens and individual actions that use a visual language to induce in the viewer a new experience and contact with the ground.

This dissertation investigates Indigenous new media artworks shown at Urban Shaman: Contemporary Aboriginal Art Gallery, located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I argue that Urban Shaman is an institution of Indigenous resurgence and translocal citizenship in Winnipeg. The new media artworks I examine operate as authoritative civic spaces by drawing upon Indigenous aesthetic traditions and new media technologies. The first chapter centers on new media artworks by artists Scott Benesiinaabandan (Anishinaabe) and Rosalie Favell (Métis), conveying Winnipeg’s histories through their artistic renditions of personal and public archives that frame Winnipeg’s city spaces. The chapter locates these works in conversation with artists Terril Calder (Métis) and Terrance Houle (Blood) whose new media artworks reframe and restage civic archives in Toronto and Calgary. The next chapter considers how new media artworks at Urban Shaman by Jude Norris, Nadia Myre, Jordan Bennett, and Terril Calder enact what I am calling Indigenous civic ecology, relating human and non-human elements of the city through Cree, Anishinaabe, Mi'kmaq and Métis genealogies. The final chapter discusses how new media artworks by Jason Baerg (Cree/ Métis), Rebecca Belmore (Anishinaabe)...

19 pages.-- REGHAB Project: Report on Workpackage 6 – Deliverables no 21 and 23.; In many European regions, gamebird hunting is an important socio-economic activity in rural areas, involving millions of people, euros and hectares. Gamebird management has historically been performed in many areas, and hunting may thus be potentially beneficial to biodiversity, by promoting conservation and management of habitats within a strategy of “conservation through wise use of natural resources”.; However, in some cases there is a conflict between hunting and the conservation of biodiversity. This conflict appears when hunting is non-sustainable and intensive and, particularly, when predators are subjected to illegal or uncontrolled killing with the purpose of maximising game numbers. Predators (including raptors) are perceived within a large part of the hunting sector as an important limiting factor for small game populations, and thus as an enemy of hunters. In some cases, this perception has lead to illegal control of protected species. As a result of such illegal activities, the protectionist movement sometimes perceives hunting as a detrimental activity for conservation. Now, many of the hunters, researchers and protectionists involved in these issues are keen to resolve this conflict...

It all began with a small, clipped image from a 1940' s Good Housekeeping magazine. There she was: a two inch tall housewife, prim in both her apron and hair style. Her arms were extended: one for balance and one with a cloth for cleaning. I took this "cleaning woman" image to Kinko ' s , the 24 -hour copy center where I spend too much time. There, I made successive photocopies and enlargements until I had a stack of grainy, obviously mechanically reproduced "drawings". Back in the studio, with a 4B charcoal pencil and paper, I vigorously drew backgrounds for the "cleaning woman" in which to do her cleanliness thing. Examples of some of the drawings are: an oil spill, rain forest foliage backed by a cityscape, and a sea turtle swimming in space near the planet Earth. In each of these drawings, I collaged a very grainy photocopy of "cleaning woman".

Objectives: To characterise the experiences of heterosexual men and women living with HIV post-diagnosis and explain these experiences in relation to their identity and sexuality. Design: Qualitative study using in-depth interviews and theoretically informed biographic disruption theory. Setting: Interviews were conducted in two Nairobi slums (Kenya). Participants: 41 HIV-infected heterosexual men and women aged 18 years or older Results: People living with HIV have divergent experiences surrounding HIV diagnosis. Post-diagnosis there are multiple phases of identity transition, including status (non-)disclosure, and attempts at identity repair and normalcy. For some people this process involves a transition to a new self-identity, incorporating both HIV and antiretroviral treatment (ART) into their lives. For others it involves a partial transition, with some aspects of their pre-diagnosis identity persisting, and for others it involves a rejection of HIV identity. Those people who were able to incorporate HIV/AIDS in their identity without it being disruptive to their biography, were pursuing safer sexual and reproductive lives. By contrast, those people with a more continuous biography continued to reflect their pre-diagnosis identity and sexual behaviour. Conclusions: People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) had to rework their sense of identity following diagnosis in the context of living in a slum setting. Men and women living with HIV in slums are poorly supported by health systems and services as they attempt to cope with a diagnosis of HIV. Given the availability of antiretroviral therapy...

Fertility intentions are strong predictors of eventual fertility. Understanding fertility intentions, and consequent reproductive health services needs of people living with HIV/AIDS(PLWHA) is critical in the context of expanding antiretroviral treatment (ART) access. Yet little is known about the fertility intentions of PLWHA in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) in general and slum settings in particular. Previous evidence on fertility intentions and HIV/ART in SSA is mixed, as well as being descriptive with little theoretical understanding. This study seeks to answer Two questions: 1. What factors affect fertility intentions among PLWHA? 2. How can our theoretical understanding of fertility intentions of PLWHA in the era of ART be improved?

Petra Müller's collection of narrative works, Desembers ("Decembers", 2007), allows for an investigation into the portrayal of identity aspects that occupy a central position in her oeuvre: the relationship between man and nature as well as the nature of authorship. These narratives reflect upon a human being's place in the wide community of earth's beings and forces, and elucidate the multiple levels of communication between man and other living creatures, which is possible by sensory awareness and by embracing the "voices of silence" beyond the range of human language. In this article Müller's narratives are explored within the framework of literature as cultural ecology, including their becoming part of a re-integrative interdiscourse by means of reintegrating in the realm of imaginative literature the excluded to the cultural reality system. Müller often links natural objects to the creation of stories/art, thus integrating the spheres of nature and culture. This is done by reconstructing objects from nature, by means of imagination and by transcending reality, into symbols of the author's/artist's activity.
