The Jewish Culture and its Influence on Twentieth Century Music: Ernest Bloch. Often described as the cradle of civilization, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region boasts rich cultural assets, and is the historical origin of major religions including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. This cultural heritage, coupled with the region s rich natural wonders, has made tourism a critical sector for economic and social development in the region. Tourism is a vital source of foreign exchange earnings, infrastructure investment, and cross-sectoral linkages. Even more importantly, the sector is a key source of job creation that can help MENA countries move from low value manufacturing into higher value-added service oriented activities. As many countries in the region transition to new governments, economic reforms can be undertaken to liberalize the sector, breaking down monopolistic market structures that prevent new entrants and stifle innovation. Similarly, there are new opportunities to develop a full-suite of tourism services (ecological, cultural, and religious tourism). Effective reform in the sector will require structural and regulatory changes that promote competition...

The aim of this paper is to offer several anthropological reflections on the presence of religions in the current world, focusing on taboo ??? an element that is present in religions such as Judaism...

The Seleucid Settlement of Dura Europos constitutes an appropriate setting to analyze the process of cultural transformation in ancient colonial areas. The site, founded at the crossroad between major Eastern and Western civilizations, is a multicultural settlement that expresses the coexistence of Jews with various populations. This dissertation analyses how the Jewish group of this city used the local material culture to preserve their identity and at the same time did dialogue with other people. The transformation resulted out of this interaction is seen in the art and architecture of the two Synagogues that they built there and which constitutes one of the most ancient testimony of the Jewish art produced by those who lived in the Diaspora.

To examine Isaac Bashevis Singer's writing as fairly and profoundly as possible, we must see him as a Jewish story-teller, a man with ghosts in his eyes. His life's mission is to resurrect, in the pages of literature, a tiny world that was brutally, senselessly extinguished from the face of the earth: that of the poverty-ridden ghettos and shtetls inhabited by the Jews of Eastern Europe--and in particular, Poland--before the Nazi Holocaust. What the Holocaust tore asunder, Singer the artist attempts to mend. He is the last survivor, as it were, and there is no one left but him to write an epitaph for the Polish Jews who were massacred. Singer is haunted by a moment frozen in time, branded on the mind. Wherever he is, the flimsy veil of reality is torn, revealing the grim vividness of Poland before Hitler. In his books, Singer is always a boy and Warsaw is always on the verge of destruction. The mere existence today of the Jewish religion and the survivors of the Holocaust is a miracle, an enigma, unaccounted for in a world that seems bent on their obliteration. Judaism, for Singer, is primarily a living faith--one that has managed to survive despite countless obstacles from both within and without because of pride, isolation, acceptance of its tradition and the will to believe. Examining Singer's art in the context of his living faith is an exhilarating and poignant experience that takes us through all his major novels that have been translated in English: Satan in Goray...

People of the Jewish faith base their belief on the written word of the Torah. Presented in this paper are fine artists that produce work within these laws. The Torah sets guidelines for life and morality. The belief system within this domain is that visual images have an impact on the viewers, and artists are accountable for what they produce. This is in opposition with art education, where freedom of expression takes precedence over morality. The results of this study will form the basis for a curriculum for the community college. The researcher's area of inquiry is directed to painting and sculpture made by artists of the Jewish faith who follow the Torah, meaning those who are observant of their faith and practices. Their skills and perceptions will be presented to educate the viewer about their visions. The research questions were posed to rabbinical authorities and artists in order to establish a clear and defined statement of what the Jewish law is regarding the fine arts. The evidence presented was obtained by questionnaires, personal interviews, articles, and opinions from Jewish scholars. Four rabbis were selected based on their erudition on Torah law, and their strong leadership positions in Jewish educational institutions. The ten artists were selected based on recommendations from art historians...

This study explores how the poetry of Else Lasker-Schüler (1869-1945) creates a personal space—a Heimat—through the poetic process. Through close readings of a selection of the poet’s works, I demonstrate the paradoxical relationship between physical structures and emotional or psychic freedom. I show how this association between form and fluidity reflects the poetic genre itself, while also drawing parallels to Lasker-Schüler’s biography and her relationships with the Berliner Bohème. Lasker-Schüler’s work has been viewed through many different lenses: Expressionism, Judaism, and feminism. Such interpretations can be problematic, as they impose limitations on the poet’s work and are thereby contradictory to the fluid qualities conveyed in her poems. Through close analysis of the formal and aesthetic aspects of Lasker-Schüler’s poetry, I illuminate this often neglected, but most important aspect of the fluctuating, creative space. Lasker-Schüler’s life circumstances forced her to live an unsettled life, but poetry seems to have functioned as a means of accessing the internal Heimat or Seelenlandschaft. The lyrical “I” of Lasker-Schüler’s poetry wanders throughout the poet’s collective works, her voice undergoing metamorphoses...

He has among others in the modern period made several paintings on the theme of the Crucifixion...

The thesis examines the physical and symbolic spaces of the eruv through a textual and visual engagement. An eruv is a synthetic single private domain to facilitate carrying in a city, which is otherwise only allowed within a private domain on Shabbat in orthodox Judaism. An eruv is created by constructing a continuous boundary and the symbolic pooling of resources of the community. Both the eruv's origin in Jewish law as well as contemporary analysis provide the framework for my own interpretation. The thesis bridges across several disciplines - from architecture, art, Judaism, anthropology, feminism, and cultural studies - to find an approach which opens this 2000 year old tradition to a contemporary encounter. The eruv's physical and intangible spaces are discussed as paradoxical spaces to create a site of encounter. In relationship to the existing and proposed readings, the contemporary significance of eruvin (pI. of eruv), not only for a Jewish community, but for any individual or community, local or foreign, is explored. The thesis discusses notions of a nomadic navigation of space, a symbiotic construction of belonging, an ethics of foreignness, and a site for encounters. More traditional interpretations that are often based on dyadic systems are contrasted with explorations of the topic in relationship to paradoxical spaces...

This dissertation explores certain attitudes towards Jews and Judaism in Old Norse literature. Regardless of an apparent lack of actual Jewish settlement in the Nordic region during the Middle Ages, medieval Icelanders and Norwegians frequently turned to the image of 'the Jew' in writing and in art, sometimes using him as an abstract theological model, or elsewhere constructing a similar kind of ethnic Other to the anti-Semitic tropes we find in medieval societies where gentiles really did live alongside Jews. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the differing histories and functions projected onto the absent Jew in medieval Scandinavia.; Germanic Languages and Literatures

Art is my means of communication. It is a visual statement of my conscience and soul. Clay is the medium I use, to help me create my statement. I use it as my visual typewriter. It is how I speak without writing, and communicate to people through their eyes. Clay is an extension of my mind and hands. The development of the initial idea, to the actual work of art, happens naturally when I use clay. It enables my ideas to become dimensional realities. The following thesis is a documentation of the process I used, from the preliminary thoughts, to the actual, installation of my piece "Tashlich - and you shall cast" The paper begins with the event that inspired my piece, and continues with my general ideas and beliefs surrounding Judaism and art. It then proceeds by describing and defining the different symbols and motifs incorporated into my piece: columns, water, stone, vines, grapes, pomegranates and color. These motifs, their place in the history of Judaism and art, are then discussed. The last part of the thesis is devoted to the technical information that I gathered and developed in order to create my piece. It includes my thoughts, perceptions, and methods, as well as formulas and recipes. The thesis concludes with photographs of the piece installed in the Bevier Gallery...

Biblical scholars have given diverse explanations for the Lamb of God metaphor in John 1:29 and 1:36. Most scholars are of the opinion that 'amnos' refers to the Passover lamb. This explanation is not obvious from the context of the Fourth Gospel. To understand the metaphor 'lamb' or 'amnos' of God, one should understand the transferable meaning of the figure or image. In this comparison, only the vehicle, namely the lamb, is given. What and who the lamb is stays open. It can be anything within the limits of the other story elements that have the same qualities as a lamb. To uncover the communicative dynamics of the metaphor, the exegete must have insight into the meaning and function of the original metaphor. Rhetoric provides a clue for the interpretation of the metaphor, namely that it is a Lamb of God. Within the pericope other rhetorical clues like antithesis and varietas are also provided. These clues are important but do not explain the image of the lamb. In this study, these problems will be considered via another medium, namely Hellenistic art and images and their penetration into Judaism and Christianity during the 1st century CE. Hellenistic and biblical images will be used to give an alternative interpretation of the metaphor of the Lamb of God.
