Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES); Pós-graduação em Ciência da Informação - FFC; The 21 st century has been marked by related changes to information and technology, notably as regards the production and use of information in the computing technologies and in the development of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to disseminate them. Thus, the representation of information has become requirement in many areas of knowledge and to meet this need were developed metadata standards that diversify from simple structures, through a kind of intermediate standard to more complex structures description. The diversity of standards Information Science area is faced with the following impasse that constitutes a research problem: how to construct appropriate and standardized representations to ensure unity and efficient retrieval of information resources? This research which belongs to information and technology line has as theme the analysis of forms of representation of information resources, in view of the changes caused by advances in ICTs in the descriptive treatment of information (DTI) with the emergence of metadata. The focus is on analysis of the theories, principles, fundamentals and tools that guide of the standardized representations development in the Information Science field. The thesis hold for this research is that the strategic integration between computing technologies and methods used in descriptive treatment of information (DTI) processes of the Science Information field consolidate the consistent and standardized construction of metadata providing a representation which ensures the unity and resources retrieval in digital information environments different. Thus...

The UNESP Institutional Repository was started in 2013 and, for its implementation, it was populated with data harvested automatically from three distinct sources (Web of Science, SciELO and Scopus). Based on UNESP’s case, this paper aims to present the process used in the conversion of records from three distinct sources (Web of Science...

The eXtensible Catalog (XC) is a unique set of software toolkits for libraries that is not directly comparable to either a traditional Integrated Library System (ILS) or a “next-generation” discovery interface. XC will go well beyond providing a discovery layer to also provide a metadata infrastructure for enriching and transforming metadata to make it usable in a variety of web environments. The XC Metadata Services Toolkit can also be used for experimentation and testing of new metadata standards and schemas and can be an invaluable tool for libraries as they become accustomed to these new standards, especially RDA. The library metadata environment is entering a period that will be characterized by significant change and uncertainty, and the eXtensible Catalog Project will provide a variety of useful tools to help the library community make informed decisions about the future.

Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP); In the digital informational environment, currently, where various kinds of resources coexist with shapes and patterns of heterogeneous metadata, many efforts have been made to achieve interoperability in order to use multiple metadata standards and reuse the metadata records through the development strategies, ranging from simple mappings between metadata elements to modeling complex structural. The intensive use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) generates the development of a various possibility of metadata standards, essential in environments manipulation of bibliographic data. The objective is to point out to what extent the methods of Descriptive Cataloging, explicit codes of cataloging (AACR2 and RDA) and metadata standards, favor the design model of digital informational environments for better structured information retrieval. For this purpose, a methodology of analysis of the exploratory and descriptive literature with the study of scientific production of the main area of Information Science and Librarianship, it is possible to identify and understand the major technological changes in the heart of Descriptive Cataloging in the digital scope. As a result is presented a proposal for modeling a functional requirements of digital informational environments that ensure interoperability in the bibliographic domain. It is believed that the use of metadata...

vi, 217 p. : ill. ; 30 cm.; Metadata is a key aspect of our evolving infrastructure for information management, social computing, and scientific collaboration. DC-2008 will focus on metadata challenges, solutions, and innovation in initiatives and activities underlying semantic and social applications. Metadata is part of the fabric of social computing, which includes the use of wikis, blogs, and tagging for collaboration and participation. Metadata also underlies the development of semantic applications, and the Semantic Web — the representation and integration of multimedia knowledge structures on the basis of semantic models. These two trends flow together in applications such as Wikipedia, where authors collectively create structured information that can be extracted and used to enhance access to and use of information sources. Recent discussion has focused on how existing bibliographic standards can be expressed as Semantic Web vocabularies to facilitate the ingration of library and cultural heritage data with other types of data. Harnessing the efforts of content providers and end-users to link, tag, edit, and describe their information in interoperable ways (”participatory metadata”) is a key step towards providing knowledge environments that are scalable...

Newspapers are increasingly capturing images digitally. Included with these digital files is technical information about the conditions of the image and the conditions surrounding image capture. Technical metadata has the potential to be a valuable resource in image reproduction, management, and archiving. Nevertheless, even though digital devices capture a large amount of technical metadata, the use of such data in the digital imaging workflow is not widespread. The use of technical metadata requires a uniform set of technical metadata standards and an open encoding scheme to embed data. From their inception, image file formats, such as TIFF and JPEG, have allowed the inclusion of technical metadata tags. The Exif schema has extended the metadata inclusion capabilities of both of these formats. Additionally, XML has emerged as a standard for users to add metadata to image files. Consequently, organizations such as the World Wide Web Consortium and Adobe Systems all support XML. Moreover, organizations such as the Digital Imaging Group (DIG35) and the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) are defining standards for technical metadata inclusion. The purpose of this study was to answer two fundamental questions about technical metadata in the newspaper industry. First...

Presented at the CRIS2012 Conference in Prague.-- 10 pages.-- Full conference programme available at: http://www.cris2012.org/findByFilter.do?categoryId=1158; The aim of the Cerif4Datasets (C4D) project is to use CERIF to capture the metadata of research datasets and integrate this metadata with that held on research projects and research outputs available on a central CERIF cloud. CERIF has so far concentrated on the core entities of organisations, people and publications and has some provisions for research outputs such as patents, but is not fully equipped to support datasets, especially when there is a need to make these readily discoverable. C4D therefore aims to explore the capabilities of CERIF and extend it where required to support metadata about research datasets from a variety of disciplines. C4D will build on existing standards where possible and develop a reference implementation that makes use of semantic technologies for improved discovery and navigation of key entities associated with datasets such as people, organisations and publications. In this paper we explore the issues related to suitable metadata standards, classification systems. An architecture is also proposed to afford the required discoverability and navigation layer.

Presented at the CRIS2002 Conference in Kassel.-- 10 pages.-- Contains: Conference paper (PDF) + PPT presentation.; Metadata provides the human- and machine-accessible gateway to data, improves data to information, and provides the semantic context within which knowledge can be induced from information. Metadata is the means for using together scientific data from heterogeneous sources. A CRIS commonly holds data which, while useful in itself, commonly is also metadata describing more detailed data and information on projects, persons, organizations, products of R&D (patents, products, publications) equipment used for R&D and R&D funding. It is important, therefore, to classify the metadata formats used in various scientific repositories in order to understand their scope and interoperability, and their relationship to CERIF representing CRISs. Metadata formats are reviewed according to intention, abstraction level and technology criteria. The place of CERIF in CRISs in this wider sense (including scientific repositories) is considered and compared with other metadata models and formats. The superiority of CERIF (in formalism and flexibility) is demonstrated.
