The advent of digital technologies and the diffusion of the world wide web (www) have expanded the boundaries of massive communication activities towards a wide range of new players, much beyond the traditional media sector. Within this context, despite the existence of a recent, prolific literature diagnosing the use of new media resources by the traditional media sector, such analyses have not been developed yet for the range of newly appeared players...

In order to draw up the ethical and moral boundaries of a communication industry that goes through structural changes...

The traditional field of journalism has been facing major challenges in recent years, either because new actors have entered that field (professional journalists actually lost the monopoly of searching, gathering, editing and diffusing news in the public sphere), or because the old actors are increasingly asked to play new roles. The social demand for more public participation in the process of handling news and information, added to the fabulous possibilities of communication brought by the digital techniques and by the Internet, gave birth to a big diversity of new media and of new forms of dealing with journalism and news. ‘Citizen journalism’, ‘participatory journalism’, ‘user-generated content’, ‘crowdsourcing’, ‘weblogs’, etc., are expressions rather common nowadays, all of them somehow calling the attention to the fact that journalism-as-a-professional-work seems to coexist more and more with various forms of journalism-as-a-civic-activity, performed by very different people, under very different conditions and with very different levels of involvement and expertise. As a consequence, questions are being raised about the ethical implications of this new scenario, both in what regards the activity of professional journalists in new (on-line) media and the active commitment of ‘laypersons’ in the process of handling and diffusing public information. In this paper we will try to analyze and to discuss these questions...

Doutoramento em Motricidade Humana na Especialidade de Dança; This thesis presents our Methodology for Bi-directional Transfer between Contemporary Dance and New Media Technologies. The term ‘Bi-directional transfer‘ describes an essential dynamic in interdisciplinary collaboration. Its nature can be described as ‘mimesis of thought’, or analysis of ‘non-sensuous correspondences’ regarding important concepts, ideas, techniques and methods in contemporary dance and new media technologies. Over the past five years we have compiled an Evolving Glossary for Interdisciplinary Collaboration in Digital (Live)Performance, which can be seen as a crystallization of our collaborative interdisciplinary research and artistic work. Taking the form of a web-based hyperdictionary, this glossary of compositional, technical and philosophical concepts and principles was designed to provide a starting point for the development of specific artistic research topics and questions. Its function is to generate new ideas, structures, methods and solutions in collaborative interdisciplinary teamwork. The Evolving Glossary thus represents a core component of our Methodology for Bi-directional Transfer, and can be applied in the context of artistic research and creation in the field of Digital (Live) Performance; a term that we use as a synonym for the intersection of contemporary dance and new media technologies. A second core component of our Methodology for Bi-directional Transfer is the Artistic Laboratory. Lab formats and methodologies are discussed to arrive at a categorization of constituent elements of artistic laboratories. In the second part of this thesis we present three examples of the application of the Evolving Glossary in the context of Artistic Laboratories. We investigate the following three main areas of the application of our methodology: 3 1. generative techniques (covering the creation of artistic material...

New Media.; This study proposes to examine the means of communication used by the Brazilian advertising market, paralleling the time to show the evolution experienced by the traditional media and digital media. Dissertation submitted as partial requisite for the conferral of the degree of Master in Marketing / JEL: M31; M37; Senior consumers have received limited attention from researchers and practitioners. Therefore, advertising managers become reliant on limited research and standing stereotypes to set their strategies. At the same time, more and more people start spending more time in later adulthood than in any other traditional marketing life stage. These senior consumers are healthier and wealthier than their ancestors were at their age. This reality is not exclusive to western countries, in fact in a few years this aging of the population will take over many of the current stars of economic growth: Places like China and South Korea also face serious population aging. This dissertation focuses on the perceptions of seniors about ads presented on the new media. Two studies were conducted to explore the way senior consumers perceive ads presented on TV (traditional media) and YouTube (new media), the first study was a experiment conducted in a senior university which gathered 107 observations, and the second a focus group interview. Firstly, it was discovered that seniors seem to be more efficient at avoiding ads on TV than on YouTube; secondly it was found that due to the different ways and purposes seniors use TV and YouTube for...

peer-reviewed; The site of this research is new media, primarily the WWW. Language policy has traditionally been seen as the work of governments and their institutions and not related to domains such as Web 2.0. The primary research question of this thesis is to consider: what impact do new media have on language policy, in particular with regard to minority languages? It focuses on both the ‘top-down’ language policy and the increasingly ‘bottom-up’ language practices in new media. It is situated within the field of ‘new media sociolinguistics’ and aspires to move the focus of this area from the issue of linguistic diversity to the issue of language policy. What differentiates it from previous work is its attempt to link practice on the WWW with language policy. The method of investigation is virtual ethnography, which involves looking at computer-mediated communication (CMC) in online networks and communities, analysing the language content and observing the online interactions at the level of the users. It is used here to observe and investigate the de facto language policies on Facebook. It was the potential use of the community driven Facebook Translations app as a mechanism of language policy by ‘bottom-up’ interests...

The main objective is to exhibit how usage data from new media can be used to assess areas where students need more help in creating their ETDs. After attending this session, attendees will be able to use usage data from new media, in conjunction with traditional assessment data, to identify strengths and weaknesses in ETD training and resources. The burgeoning ETD program at Florida International University (FIU) has provided many opportunities to experiment with assessment strategies and new media. The usage statistics from YouTube and the ETD LibGuide revealed areas of strength and weakness in the training resources and the overall ETD training initiative. With the ability to assess these materials, they have been updated to better meet student needs. In addition to these assessment tools, there are opportunities to connect these statistics with data from a common error checklist, student feedback from ETD workshops, and final ETD submission surveys to create a full-fledged outcome based assessment program for the ETD initiative.

With the increasing popularity of the Internet, email marketing has become a convenient and dynamic mode of communication that enables business organizations and personal sellers to promote their products or services at a much lower cost and with a potentially more global reach. This article aims to examine the impact of new media on the encoding of persuasive messages in sales emails as a channel of direct marketing, and the extent to which the use of new media influences the overall interactional or social strategy of credibility enhancement and persuasion in the context of sales promotion. A genre analysis based on a modified move scheme proposed in this study was conducted on 160 sales letters (80 emails and 80 prints) randomly selected from a database of 10,972 sales letters collected from 36 categories of recipients in Hong Kong over a six-month period. Similarities and differences in discourse structures were found across the two corpora, and discussions were made with reference to a conceptual framework titled the Lingual-Belief Interaction Model proposed by the author. The model addresses the role of text, context, and interface in sales email study on the one hand, and the interplay of belief, interaction, and language in persuasive communication on the other. In-depth interviews were conducted with 16 specialist and corporate informants in the field of sales promotion communication to verify the results of analysis.; Ming Cheung

This thesis examines the extent to which vernacular mediation, or the ongoing, sociohistorically situated, and discursive communicative acts through new media technologies, enables the cultural participation and emancipation of marginal groups. It investigates how the Ethnolinguistic group Karay‐a appropriated the Internet and digital music and video production technologies to reinvent their stereotyped identities, develop collectivity, and work towards the goal of bringing socioeconomic emancipation to their homeland of Antique in Western Philippines. By following a cultural studies approach to examine three cases of vernacular mediation, this thesis aims to explore how the dialogical interaction of new media technologies, audience or individual agency, institutional logics, and asymmetries in power enable and shape a specific emancipatory aim without foreclosing their future potentials. Through an analysis of the musical subgenre Original Kinaray‐a Music (OKM), the online community kinaray‐a.com, and the digital short film Handum produced by the marginal group, this thesis argues that vernacular mediation practices have the potential to facilitate cultural participation by enabling expressions and meanings to be reshaped and shared. The sharing of meanings adds to the social and cultural capitals of marginal individuals and enables them to forge social ties. These ties can lead to collective mobilization. However...

The media environment of Palestinians living in the Occupied Territories has developed extensively in the last twenty years, in ways that might seem to present Palestinians with enriched opportunities for public debate. Yet, examining the political contexts of media development with a focus on the periods of the first and second Intifadas reveals that the contemporary media environment is not necessarily more conducive to democratic change. Since 1948, Palestinians have assembled their media world out of other states’ media, and a diverse collection of small and large media. This act of assemblage has had as a goal the assembling of Palestinians into a sovereign polity. During the first Intifada, Palestinians had no broadcast media and Israel severely censored Palestinian newspapers. In the context of the popular uprising, Palestinian activists relied on small media like graffiti to evade Israeli restrictions. During the Oslo period, the Palestinian Authority (PA) established official Palestinian broadcast media. Palestinian entrepreneurs opened radio and television stations, and Internet news sites. However, the apparent potential of this new media landscape did not come to fruition. During the second Intifada, PA restrictions on the press continued and Israeli violence against the press intensified. In this Intifada...

This thesis is a comparative study of the classification and regulation of media content in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. These three countries were chosen due to their historical links, common language and similar problems. The main purpose of this thesis is to ascertain why, and how, media content is regulated for children and young people, and whether regulation is working, given the easy access to new technologies. Further: can such media content, when viewed alone, be regulated? In order to do this comparative study, a clarification of what new media technologies are is given and what is currently accepted to be the status of childhood. The thesis firstly investigates therefore, the present concept of childhood, how it compares with the past and why there is a need to make a special case for children. It examines the differences between adulthood and childhood and at adult-child relationships from the classical period to the present day. From the present study, it is apparent that, since the earliest recorded history of children, childhood has been seen as a formative time of life. The thesis investigates the need for regulation of media content and compares, in contrast, how the free market has simply transferred responsibility of regulation from that of the government...

This dissertation investigates Indigenous new media artworks shown at Urban Shaman: Contemporary Aboriginal Art Gallery, located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I argue that Urban Shaman is an institution of Indigenous resurgence and translocal citizenship in Winnipeg. The new media artworks I examine operate as authoritative civic spaces by drawing upon Indigenous aesthetic traditions and new media technologies. The first chapter centers on new media artworks by artists Scott Benesiinaabandan (Anishinaabe) and Rosalie Favell (Métis), conveying Winnipeg’s histories through their artistic renditions of personal and public archives that frame Winnipeg’s city spaces. The chapter locates these works in conversation with artists Terril Calder (Métis) and Terrance Houle (Blood) whose new media artworks reframe and restage civic archives in Toronto and Calgary. The next chapter considers how new media artworks at Urban Shaman by Jude Norris, Nadia Myre, Jordan Bennett, and Terril Calder enact what I am calling Indigenous civic ecology, relating human and non-human elements of the city through Cree, Anishinaabe, Mi'kmaq and Métis genealogies. The final chapter discusses how new media artworks by Jason Baerg (Cree/ Métis), Rebecca Belmore (Anishinaabe)...

Policy Question What new media tactics should be employed to galvanize North Carolina Millennial voters in the run-up to the May 8, 2012 vote on Amendment One? Background and Policy Context The Coalition to Protect All NC Families was formed October 2011 in response to legislation passed by the NC General Assembly, Senate Bill 514, in support of a constitutional amendment that reads, “Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state.” Voters in NC will have the opportunity to vote “for” or “against” this amendment on May 8, 2012. The Coalition has been leading a campaign, on behalf of more than 100 member organizations, to educate voters on the harmful effects of this amendment and mobilize them to turnout and vote against it. Given the short timeline, this group is especially concerned with voter turnout. For this reason, they are particularly interested in Millennials as a target demographic for this research. As I later outline, this age group (18-31) is overwhelmingly in opposition to the proposed amendment, and is the generation most engaged online. The success of the campaign hinges on engaging this critical demographic. Data, Methods and Analysis My research strategy includes three steps: 1. Identify existing new media strategies used in previous ballot measure initiatives. 2. Research new media best practices...
