This poster describes the methodology for integrating complex, low volume reports from clinical service departments into a Clinical Data Repository. A procedure for uploading reports in a Portable Digital Format (PDF) and linking them to an existing patient record was devised by the Enterprise Information Services (EIS) department at Cedars-Sinai Health System (CSHS).

The neural circuits that regulate sleep and arousal as well as their integration with circadian circuits remain unclear, especially in Drosophila. This issue intersects with that of photoreception, because light is both an arousal signal in diurnal animals and an entraining signal for the circadian clock. To identify neurons and circuits relevant to light-mediated arousal as well as circadian phase-shifting, we developed genetic techniques that link behavior to single cell-type resolution within the Drosophila central brain. We focused on the unknown function of the 10 PDF-containing large ventral lateral neurons (l-LNvs) of the Drosophila circadian brain network and show here that these cells function in light-dependent arousal. They also are important for phase shifting in the late-night (dawn), indicating that the circadian photoresponse is a network property and therefore non-cell-autonomous. The data further indicate that the circuits underlying light-induced arousal and circadian photoentrainment intersect at the l-LNvs and then segregate.

The LARK RNA-binding protein (RBP) has well documented roles in the circadian systems of Drosophila and mammals. Recent studies have demonstrated that the Drosophila LARK RBP is associated with many mRNA targets, in vivo, including those that regulate either neurophysiology or development of the nervous system. In the present study, we have employed conditional expression techniques to distinguish developmental and physiological functions of LARK for a defined class of neurons: the Pigment Dispersing Factor (PDF)-containing LNv clock neurons. We found that increased LARK expression during development dramatically alters the small LNv class of neurons with no obvious effects on the large LNv cells. Conversely, conditional expression of LARK at the adult stage results in altered clock protein rhythms and circadian locomotor activity, even though neural morphology is normal in such animals. Electrophysiological analyses at the larval neuromuscular junction indicate a role for LARK in regulating neuronal excitability. Altogether, our results demonstrate that LARK activity is critical for neuronal development and physiology.

To compare circadian gene expression within highly discrete neuronal populations, we separately purified and characterized two adjacent but distinct groups of Drosophila adult circadian neurons: the 8 small and 10 large PDF-expressing ventral lateral neurons (s-LNvs and l-LNvs, respectively). The s-LNvs are the principal circadian pacemaker cells, whereas recent evidence indicates that the l-LNvs are involved in sleep and light-mediated arousal. Although half of the l-LNv–enriched mRNA population, including core clock mRNAs, is shared between the l-LNvs and s-LNvs, the other half is l-LNv– and s-LNv–specific. The distribution of four specific mRNAs is consistent with prior characterization of the four encoded proteins, and therefore indicates successful purification of the two neuronal types. Moreover, an octopamine receptor mRNA is selectively enriched in l-LNvs, and only these neurons respond to in vitro application of octopamine. Dissection and purification of l-LNvs from flies collected at different times indicate that these neurons contain cycling clock mRNAs with higher circadian amplitudes as well as at least a 10-fold higher fraction of oscillating mRNAs than all previous analyses of head RNA. Many of these cycling l-LNv mRNAs are well expressed but do not cycle or cycle much less well elsewhere in heads. The results suggest that RNA cycling is much more prominent in circadian neurons than elsewhere in heads and may be particularly important for the functioning of these neurons.

A primary function of males for many species involves mating with females for reproduction. Drosophila melanogaster males respond to the presence of other males by prolonging mating duration to increase the chance of passing on their genes. To understand the basis of such complex behaviors, we examine the genetic network and neural circuits that regulate rival-induced longer mating duration (LMD). Here we identify a small subset of clock neurons in the male brain that regulate LMD via neuropeptide signaling. LMD requires the function of pigment-dispersing factor (PDF) in four s-LNv neurons and its receptor PDFR in two LNd neurons per hemisphere, as well as the function of neuropeptide F (NPF) in two neurons within the sexually dimorphic LNd region and its receptor NPFR1 in four s-LNv neurons per hemisphere. Moreover, rival exposure modifies the neuronal activities of a subset of clock neurons involved in neuropeptide signaling for LMD.

A cultura do maracujá está em franca expansão tanto para a produção de frutos para consumo in natura como para suco. O Brasil é o primeiro produtor mundial de maracujá, com produção aproximada de 684 mil toneladas em 48.752 hectares. O Estado da Bahia destaca-se como o maior produtor com 275 mil toneladas (40 % da produção nacional), onde o maracujazeiro é cultivado em solos de Tabuleiros Costeiros. Estes solos podem apresentar-se intemperizados, com baixos teores de matéria orgânica, escassez de água, altos teores de ferro e alumínio, levando assim, a deficiência de boro (B) nas plantas de maracujá. O boro desempenha importante papel na migração e metabolismo de carboidratos, facilitando o transporte dos açúcares através das membranas. A deficiência de B inibe ou paralisa o crescimento dos tecidos meristemáticos da parte aérea e das raízes. As plantas de maracujá deficientes em B apresentam inicialmente atrofia e posteriormente, necrose da gema terminal podendo ocorrer ou não o brotamento de gemas laterais logo abaixo da gema atrofiada. Ocorrem ainda, clorose irregular e manchas necróticas nas margens das folhas. Assim, considerando a possível limitação de boro em solos de Tabuleiros Costeiros, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito desse nutriente na produção do maracujá amarelo.; 2010; PDF. 036.

A mangueira Mangifera indica L. pertence à família Anacardiaceae. É originada do sul da Ásia, mais precisamente da Índia, onde há mais de 4000 anos é cultivada, e do arquipélago Malaio, de onde se disseminou por outras partes do mundo, inclusive as Américas. Com uma área cultivada superior a 31,2 mil hectares, dos quais 26,2 mil irrigados, a Bahia é o principal estado produtor e exportador de manga do país, tendo produzido em 2008, mais de 1,11 milhão de toneladas dessa fruta, o que corresponde a mais de 51 % da safra nacional. A PRD ou irrigação parcial do sistema radicular é uma técnica que tem o objetivo aplicar água de forma alternada entre os dois lados da planta para manter parte do sistema de raiz em contato com solo seco, enquanto o resto do sistema radicular está em uma condição molhada. Os mecanismos fisiológicos da prática de PRD estão baseados em estudos com plantas cultivadas em vaso onde freqüentemente raízes estavam artificialmente separadas em dois recipientes. Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar a produtividade de frutos de mangueira sob manejo de irrigação utilizando a técnica de PRD em diferentes fases fenológicas.; 2010; PDF. 050.

This final report is the fifth deliverable for the World Bank funded project 'operational design for the project development fund and for the viability gap fund'. Taking into account feedback and further consideration of issues rose in the previous Reports, it aims to: provide high level recommendations on the overall Public Private Partnership (PPP) framework in Pakistan, recognizing international best practice but also taking into account the specific Pakistan context and the challenges faced their-in; provide the analysis of the project pipeline for PPP projects in Pakistan, on the basis of consultations undertaken in Islamabad in May 2009; and design possible structures for the Project Development Fund (PDF) and for the Viability Gap Fund (VGF), that is informed by the current local enabling environment for PPPs, including the institutional capabilities and the existing pipeline of PPP projects. We explore the sensitivity of W and Z boson production in hadronic collisions to uncertainties in parton distribution functions (PDFs) at large x arising from uncertainties in nuclear corrections when using deuterium data in global QCD fits. The W and Z differential cross sections show increasing influence of nuclear corrections at high boson rapidities, particularly for the d quark, which is diluted somewhat in the decay lepton rapidity distributions. The effects of PDF uncertainties on heavy W' and Z' bosons beyond the Standard Model become progressively more important for larger boson masses or rapidities, both in p-p collisions at the LHC and in p-pbar scattering at the Tevatron.; Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures; to appear in JHEP

The aim of the paper is to discuss the main characteristics of a complete theoretical and numerical model for turbulent polydispersed two-phase flows, pointing out some specific issues. The theoretical details of the model have already been presented [Minier and Peirano, Physics Reports, Vol. 352/1-3, 2001 ]. Consequently, the present work is mainly focused on complementary aspects, that are often overlooked and that require particular attention. In particular, the following points are analysed : the necessity to add an extra term in the equation for the velocity of the fluid seen in the case of twoway coupling, the theoretical and numerical evaluations of particle averages and the fulfilment of the particle mass-continuity constraint. The theoretical model is developed within the PDF formalism. The important-physical choice of the state vector variables is first discussed and the model is then expressed as a stochastic differential equation (SDE) written in continuous time (Langevin equations) for the velocity of the fluid seen. The interests and limitations of Langevin equations, compared to the single-phase case, are reviewed. From the numerical point of view, the model corresponds to an hybrid Eulerian/Lagrangian approach where the fluid and particle phases are simulated by different methods. At HERA heavy quarks may contribute up to 30% of the structure function $F_2$. The potential of including heavy-quark data in the ZEUS PDF fits is explored, using $D^*$ double differential cross-sections as well as the inclusive quantities $F_2^{c\bar{c}}$, $F_2^{c\bar{c}}$. The introduction of heavy quarks requires an extension of the DGLAP formalism. The unique forward LHCb acceptance opens the possibility for performing precision Standard Model (SM) processes in a kinematical regime beyond the reach of both ATLAS and CMS experiments. In this article we discuss the feasibility of performing $W^{\pm}j$ measurements with 14 TeV LHCb data. In particular, we find that the leptonic asymmetry at high pseudorapidity, with appropriate cuts on the associated jet, is sensitive to the $d$ quark PDF in a region of Bjorken $x > 0.5$. In this work, we discuss some points relevant for stochastic modelling of one- and two-phase turbulent flows. In the framework of stochastic modelling, also referred to PDF approach, we propose a new Langevin model including all viscosity effects and thus that is consistent with viscous Navier-Stokes equations. In the second part of the work, we show how to develop a second-order unconditionally stable numerical scheme for the stochastic equations proposed. Accuracy and consistency of the numerical scheme is demonstrated analytically. In the last part of the work, we study the fluid flow in a channel flow with the proposed viscous method. A peculiar approach is chosen: the flow is solved with a Eulerian method and after with the Lagrangian model proposed which uses some of the Eulerian quantities. In this way attention is devoted to the issue of consistency in hybrid Eulerian/Lagrangian methods. It is shown that the coupling is important indeed and that to couple the Lagrangian model to an Eulerian one which is not consistent with the same turbulence physics leads to large errors. The formula for probability density functions (PDFs) has been extended to include PDF for energy dissipation rates in addition to other PDFs such as for velocity fluctuations, velocity derivatives, fluid particle accelerations, energy transfer rates, etc, and it is shown that the formula actually explains various PDFs extracted from direct numerical simulations and experiments performed in a wind tunnel. It is also shown that the formula with appropriate zooming increment corresponding to experimental situation gives a new route to obtain the scaling exponents of velocity structure function, including intermittency exponent, out of PDFs of velocity fluctuations.; Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures
