Design research can be described as a form of research that involves the design of some human creation or artefact. These artefacts are designed for some purpose, i.e., they aim at responding to some human necessity, either existing or foreseen. Although these artefacts are inescapable in design research, the actual outcome of design research is knowledge about the artefacts. The knowledge resulting from design research is named knowledge-for-a-purpose. It is contrasted with knowledge-for-understanding, the knowledge resulting from other forms of research. The article addresses the validity of knowledge-for-a-purpose. Four elements for such validity are presented, namely: success of the corresponding artefacts, generality, novelty and explanation capability. In order to attempt to clarify the view underlying the article, design research and its outcomes are contrasted with several other concepts that are common in the design research discourse: design activity, design science, and design science research.; Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)

Background : While the research design of articles published in medical journals and in some physical therapy journals has already been evaluated, this has not been investigated in Brazilian physical therapy journals. Objective : To describe the research design used in all articles published in Brazilian scientific journals that are freely available, have high Qualis rankings, and are relevant to physical therapy over a 7-year period. Method : We extracted the bibliometric data, research design, research type (human or animal), and clinical area for all articles published. The articles were grouped into their level of evidence, and descriptive analyses were performed. We calculated the frequency, proportions of articles, and 95% confidence interval of these proportions with each research design in each journal. We cross-tabulated the clinical areas with research designs (expressed as number and percentages). Results : A total of 1,458 articles from four Brazilian journals were found: Revista Brasileira de Fisioterapia, Revista Fisioterapia em Movimento, Revista Fisioterapia e Pesquisa, and Revista Acta Fisiátrica. The majority of articles were classified as level II of evidence (60%), followed by level III (29%) and level I (10%). The most prevalent research designs were cross-sectional studies (38%)...

Health coaching (HC) is a process holding tremendous potential as a complementary medical intervention to shape healthy behavior change and affect rates of chronic lifestyle diseases. Empirical knowledge of effectiveness for the HC process, however, is lacking. The purposes of this paper are to present the study protocol for the Ithaca Coaching Project while also addressing research design, methodological issues, and directions for HC research. This is one of the first large-scale, randomized control trials of HC for primary prevention examining impact on physical and emotional health status in an employee population. An additional intent for the project is to investigate self-determination theory as a theoretical framework for the coaching process. Participants (n=300) are recruited as part of a campus-wide wellness initiative and randomly assigned to one of three levels of client-centered HC or a control with standard wellness program care. Repeated measures analyses of covariance will be used to examine coaching effectiveness while path analyses will be used to examine relationships between coaching processes, self-determination variables, and health outcomes. There is a great need for well-designed HC studies that define coaching best practices...

In this paper, we present a novel approach to contextualize course design by the application of the Omnispective Analysis and Reasoning (OAR) framework to map the goals and intent of a course to its design and delivery. Effective design and delivery of courses requires alignment between planned learning activities and learning outcomes. However, it is generally not trivial to translate learning outcomes into course design, particularly so when using a Learning Management System (LMS). This is further compounded by the differences between the language of teaching theory and that used by the LMS. Thus, there is a need to effectively capture the rationale for design decisions in a course and map them to desired outcomes. We illustrate the application of the OAR framework with a process for translating a learning objective into course design using the Moodle LMS.; This work is based on initial research supported by the Australian National University, and the Commonwealth of Australia, through the Cooperative Research Centre for Advanced Automotive Technology. Interdisciplinary research enables the bringing together of multiple perspectives in order to explore a topic. Creativity is enhanced when these insights can complement rather than constrain each other and sit comfortably within the research design. But bringing different perspectives together is not easy. A research design that is flexible, iterative, can combine qualitative and quantitative evidence, and can be used as a framework for participatory action research assists interdisciplinary research. The case study design to conduct interdisciplinary research is described in this paper through the use of examples in the following three areas • Using case studies in participatory action research – the family violence case study; • Case studies to develop concepts – the community participation case studies; • Case studies to build evidence-base for policy and practice – the recovery oriented mental health care case studies. The paper discusses the benefits and limitations of the case study design and suggests ways to facilitate effective interdisciplinary research using this design.; Judy Taylor

As the largest consumer of resources globally, the construction industry faces significant challenges due to future changes in resource availability. How might this complex industry achieve reduction of resource consumption and waste given the disconnections existing between stakeholders in the building procurement process and the persistence of discipline based knowledge? This question is among many being addressed by a current Australian Research Council funded research project entitled ‘Reconsidering Sustainable Building and Design: A Cultural Change Approach.’ The project involves ten partners from government and industry, and academic partners in China and Germany. A feature of the project is the introduction of transdisciplinary charrettes to transcend disciplinary knowledge boundaries and promote innovation. Design charrettes have a long history in the architecture profession and are effectively employed in transdisciplinary planning and building projects worldwide. The project intends to employ a charrette based method for data collection and analysis. Scant literature exists in relation to such a research method. Hence, a literature review has been undertaken to differentiate the charrettes models currently employed in design and consultation; observing attributes of each relevant the research process. This paper discusses the outcomes of the review and outlines how this information will be employed in the project to achieve effective reduction of waste in the construction industry. The resultant ‘Charrette Methodology Matrix’ is also applicable to other projects and industries which may seek to engage a charrette based research method.; Jasmine Palmer...

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited; The goal of this thesis is to examine the negotiation/conflict environment and develop some proposed effects that Negotiation Support Systems (NSS) have on the socio-emotional climate. This introduction of NSS into the negotiation cycle is expected to change the way in which bargaining parties interact. Normative and socio-emotional biases, while not completely eliminated, may be controlled and limited to a degree. This study suggests that shared use of NSS during negotiations helps users by structuring the session to better refine the party's objectives and tactfully convey them to the other party. Additionally, through better appreciation of the strengths and weaknesses of the other party's position and arguments, interest differentials may be identified more quickly and thus negotiations may move towards a more integrative solution. A proposed research design is presented to evaluate whether use of NSS can improve resource consumption, decision quality, perceived fairness, perceived satisfaction and working relationships; http://archive.org/details/negotiationsuppo00owen; Lieutenant, United States Navy

Value of information (VOI) methods have been proposed as a systematic approach to inform optimal research design and prioritization. Four related questions arise that VOI methods could address. (i) Is further research for a health technology assessment (HTA) potentially worthwhile? (ii) Is the cost of a given research design less than its expected value? (iii) What is the optimal research design for an HTA? (iv) How can research funding be best prioritized across alternative HTAs? Following Occam's razor, we consider the usefulness of VOI methods in informing questions 1–4 relative to their simplicity of use. Expected value of perfect information (EVPI) with current information, while simple to calculate, is shown to provide neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition to address question 1, given that what EVPI needs to exceed varies with the cost of research design, which can vary from very large down to negligible. Hence, for any given HTA, EVPI does not discriminate, as it can be large and further research not worthwhile or small and further research worthwhile. In contrast, each of questions 1–4 are shown to be fully addressed (necessary and sufficient) where VOI methods are applied to maximize expected value of sample information (EVSI) minus expected costs across designs. In comparing complexity in use of VOI methods...

The objective of this study is to examine the cultural views of healthy aging, knowledge and barriers to services, and perception of health sciences research among community-dwelling Chinese older adults in Chicago's Chinatown. This qualitative study is guided by the Precede-Proceed conceptual model with community-based participatory research design. Data analysis is based on eight focus group interviews with Chinese older (age 60+) adults (n = 78). We used a grounded theory framework to systematically guide the thematic structure of our data. Findings show participants described cultural conception of health in terms of physical function, psychological well-being, social support, and cognitive function. The availability, affordability, and cultural barriers towards health care services were major negative enabling factors that inhibit participants from fulfilling health needs. Perception and knowledge of health sciences research were also discussed. This study has implications for the delivery of culturally appropriate health care services to the Chinese aging population.

Designers are required to evaluate their designs against the needs and capabilities of their target user groups in order to achieve successful, inclusive products. This dissertation presents exploratory research into the specific problem of supporting analytical design evaluation for Inclusive Design. The analytical evaluation process involves evaluating products with user data rather than testing with actual users. The work focuses on the exploration of a capability-demand model of product interaction as the basis for analytical inclusive evaluation. This model suggests that by comparing the measured sensory, cognitive and motor capabilities of a user population to the corresponding product demands, the degree of fit between users and products can be assessed. The research problem was addressed by firstly examining theories of human function and performance together with existing sources of user capability data. It was found that user capability data was fragmented and lacking in terms of predicting design exclusion and difficulty at the population level. More fundamentally, however, it was found that the relationships between measured capability in populations with low functional capacity and real world task performance with products (such as errors...

This paper addresses the question of empirical research in the field of using history in Mathematics Education. More precisely, it focuses on what role empirical research may serve in the discussion of why to use history in mathematics education and how to do it. This is exemplified mainly by referring to two empirical research studies on the use of history in the Danish upper secondary mathematics program. Also it is illustrated how both the research design and research methodology of these two studies were dependant on the initial purpose of using history being concerned with history as a goal rather than history as a tool. Finally, perspectives are drawn on the possible benefits of increasing the amount of empirical research being done within the field of using history in mathematics education.

This paper goes back fifty years to a period that can be considered the birth of the computational design research. During the sixties the computer was only accessible to a few mathematicians or programmers and it becomes object of a much wider theorization and influence. Calculus and mathematical logic inherent to the computer support the emergence of areas including the information theory and the operational research, which would call the attention of social science and arts. Some Design and Architecture Research Centers, in the UK and the USA start using the computer to support design methodologies based on analysis and mathematical logic as well as to assist the design conception process. A similar approach can also be found at he Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm (HfG-Ulm), in Germany, founded in 1953 by the Swiss architect Max Bill. Despite its short existence, it was considered a very important school in the twentieth century, where a remarkable group of teachers and ideas converged. In this context, this paper describes the relevance of the HfG Ulm regarding the exploration of scientific analysis methods associated with the Design Process. Comparing to other contemporary Research Centers, this approach at the HfG Ulm was remarkable because it was introduced and practiced without the use of computers. Therefore...
