Information about Sport Participation Index (SPI) is a critical factor in the sport development process. Sociodemographic data can be a cost effective instrument to increase effi ciency of local policies that promote sport participation (SP). Although bibliography about SP is vast, the analysis and comparison of previous works is complex due to heterogeneity in methodologies. There is an enormous disparity in SP results in Portugal: Marivoet (2001) refers that SPI in Portugal is 27%; Almeida, & Graça (1998) refer that the non participation percentage in Portugal is 60%; and according to the Eurobarometer report (2004) Portugal presents the lowest fi gure of SPI, 22%, followed by Greece 26%, while the European average is 38%. There is a limited availability of data about SP in small cities. The presented study intended to: a) characterise SP in two small cities; b) identify target groups in order to increase the effi ciency local authority efforts’.

Aim of the abstract/paper - research question The purpose of this paper is to provide a systematic overview of possible approaches to sports tourism management, from a TQM perspective. To accomplish this goal, a bibliography review has been carried out by analyzing the articles that studied TQM in companies of Sport Tourism. Services, sport, leisure or sports tourism issues are present in our society and in the current specific literature. This paper seeks to build a structured synthesis of this knowledge based on its bibliography. Firstly, the services are characterized and classified. Secondly, as defended by some authors, sports and leisure services’ specificity is exposed. The following section examines sport tourism services by addressing not only its definition but also the industry’s dimension. Finally, there is an approach to the sport tourism sector, through some studies on Total Quality Management, in the services sector. This last aspect constitutes the paper’s core. 2. Theoretical background or literature review Sports Tourism represents the body of knowledge which is related to a set of practices that associate tourism and sport. Sport activities and tourist activities present a symbiotic relationship. Definitions of Sport Tourism are based on the concepts of Sport and Tourism...

This paper examines the impact of the global economic crisis on revenues on all non-governmental sport organizations (sport NGOs) in Slovenia, as a small European economy. Five types of operating revenues of all sport NGOs from 2007 to 2010 have been analyzed. We found that the overall trend of sport NGOs revenues does not correspond exactly to the trends of the Slovenian economy. The greatest financial impacts were experienced in grassroots sport, while professional sport NGOs have increased their operating revenues, mostly due to increases of public revenues. The findings suggest that the true impact of the recession on Slovenian sport NGOs remains to be seen. We conclude that the ongoing recession will affect grassroots sport the least, while semi-professional and professional sport NGOs will be under financial threat. Because of the synergistic effects of different types of NGOs, this could affect the sustainability of Slovenian sport.

The global spread of diseases related to sedentariness is renewing the interest in the promotion of physical activity (PA). At the same time, the international discussion about the significance and forms of health-enhancing physical activity is paradigmatically changing: while sport has generally been considered healthy over a long period in the past, most health organisations today principally recommend moderate exercise as conducive to good health. For this reason, the role of sport is becoming rather ambiguous in the political agenda related to the promotion of a healthy lifestyle: on the one hand sport is – as an abstract term – still semantically connected with health; on the other hand it is – in its traditional-competitive form – increasingly marginalised as a medium of health. The question of the role of sport in the modern health-related promotion of PA has not been exhaustively discussed until now. In order to make enquiries into this phenomenon, this dissertation uses a theoretical framework based on Luhmann’s systems theory Luhmann (1985). Through the empirical method of content structuring analysis (Mayring, 2003), 15 documents for the promotion of PA issued by the ministries of health in Germany, France, and Italy have been examined. These countries...

The focus of this study is the relationship between secondary school students' sense of cultural identity and their participation in sports. Recent studies by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on the participation of Australian youth in sports and physical activities indicated that 25 per cent of young adolescents aged 12 to 14 years were not involved in sports. This figure rose to 36 per cent for students in one-parent families; to 44 per cent for those from overseas and non-English speaking countries. Other studies found that those of minority cultural background more often played Soccer, Australian Rules Football and Rugby than Cricket, Netball or Hockey. The participation of the larger minority ethnic groups of Australia within the established sports was the focus of a 1997 book, pointed to the need for studies which investigated individuals‟ personal understanding of their own and mainstream culture and how these factors influenced their involvement in sports. This study conducted such research with students from year 11 classes in six secondary schools in Adelaide. It adopted the humanistic sociological approach originating with the Polish-American sociologist Florian Znaniecki, and later developed by J J Smolicz for research on cultural pluralism in Australia. The concepts of group cultural values and individual personal cultural values were adopted to investigate individuals' participation in sport and their sense of cultural identity. The method involved collecting information on participants' personal and family background and analysing their written personal statements in to response open-ended guideline questions on their views and experiences concerning playing sport...

Competitive engineering involves making modifications to the structure of youth sport (e.g., rules, facilities, equipment and competitive structure) to promote positive sport experiences and desirable athlete outcomes. Although this is a promising approach to structure youth sport, empirical evidence supporting competitive engineering has focused on skill development and performance, with little known about how athletes’ perceive these modified competitive environments. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore young female athletes’ experiences in their competitively engineered soccer environment. Seventeen recreational and competitive soccer players, aged 8-11, participated in semi-structured interviews that featured several visual qualitative methods (i.e., athlete-directed photography, an athlete drawing exercise, a pile-sort exercise and a photo-elicitation interview) to facilitate insight on their sport environments. Results from the athlete interviews revealed that the athlete’s competitively engineered soccer experience was perceived as being a unique environment that emphasized personal development, positive relationships with coaches, peers and parents, and the underlying enjoyment of sport. Results were summarized into five themes that fell under the overarching unique environment concept...

In sports like gymnastics and figure skating where peak performance occurs before physical maturation it logically follows that athletes need to be dedicated to their athletic development at a young age if elite performance is to be attained. However, countless studies have reported that early specialization in a single sport exposes youth to elevated risks of negative physical, psychological or emotional outcomes associated with sport participation (Côté & Fraser-Thomas, 2007). As such, it is important that we develop an understanding of the contextual factors or features of specialized youth sport environment(s) that are having positive impacts on youth growth, development and long-term commitment to sport. By harnessing an understanding of the features of specialized youth sport environments that positively contribute to the youth sport experience, we will be better equipped to mitigate the increased risk of negative outcomes in these environments. Using the National Research Council Institute of Medicine’s (2002) eight setting features as a framework, the general goal of the current study was to explore the specialized youth sport environment as it is experienced by young athletes. Photo-elicitation was used to conduct interviews with 15 female athletes between the ages of 8 and 13 who primarily participated in one sport for 12 or more hours per week...

This dissertation offers a critical history of the Sport for Development and Peace paradigm by exploring the United Nations’ use of sport in the development context. It questions the dominant, ideal vision of Sport for Development and Peace in which sport is understood to offer an innovative and pragmatic approach to development and to act as a vehicle for the promotion of health, education, peace-building, economic growth, and infrastructural development. Within a framework of the “history of the present” and drawing upon a post-structural discourse analysis and archival research I trace the use of sport from colonial and imperial endeavours, through to post-World War II reconstruction, to the contemporary moment, so as to make visible the political and contested nature of implementing sport in the development context. Arguing that the Sport for Development and Peace paradigm is not a novel venture, that it extends a (neo)colonial governmental apparatus, and that it reinscribes neoliberal rationalities, I seek to explore how Sport for Development and Peace policies conceal and reproduce broader global power relations.; Thesis (Ph.D, Kinesiology & Health Studies) -- Queen's University, 2015-08-31 23:50:35.928

Research in the field of developmental psychology has highlighted the importance of structured activities in providing positive experiences and outcomes for youth. In particular, youth participation in organized sport has been linked to the development of physical, motor, and psychosocial skills. Although these outcomes have been discussed in the sport psychology literature, it is not clear how positive youth development may be facilitated through sport. An ecological approach was used to examine developmental processes, personal characteristics, contextual factors, and time elements that may be linked to youth sport participation and positive development. Study 1 used a quantitative methodology to examine the relationship between developmental asset possession and youth sport outcomes such as burnout and enjoyment. Of the eight asset categories examined, four emerged as significant predictors of burnout and/or enjoyment. Specifically, positive identity, support, and empowerment were linked to burnout and positive identity, empowerment, and social competencies were linked to enjoyment. Study 2 also utilized a quantitative methodology in order to investigate differences between a group of youth sport “specializers” and a group of youth sport “samplers”. Outcomes including burnout...

Despite the physical health and psychosocial benefits, few individuals with acquired physical disabilities participate in sport. This manuscript-based thesis is composed of four studies that aim to provide a more nuanced understanding of the theoretical and contextual factors that influence sport participation among this population. Study 1 investigated the predictive value of the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA). The HAPA model has been used among a variety of populations; however, it has not been used to predict sport participation among adults with acquired physical disabilities nor has athletic identity been considered as a supplement to the model. Results of the structural equation model demonstrated that the modified HAPA model explained 19% of the variance in sport participation. Study 2 explored how athletic identity was lost or (re)developed after acquiring a physical disability. Eleven adults with an acquired physical disability participated in semi-structured interviews. Participants’ stories of sport pre- and post-injury fit into three distinct narratives. The non-athlete narrative focused on physical changes in the body; the other two narratives primarily focused on present sport behaviour. Study 3 explored the influence of the perceived self and disability on participation in specific types of leisure-time physical activity (LTPA)...

According to the 2008 Statistics Canada report on the extracurricular activities of Canadian children and youth, approximate 76% of Canadians under the age of 17 participate in sport. As such, sport represents a significant developmental experience in many young peoples’ lives. Whether this experience is positive or negative depends on a number of factors related to the specific context in which sport participation occurs. In particular, interpersonal interactions are known to be a significant influence on athlete development and may vary greatly across sport contexts. In youth sport, there are two primary contexts of participation: coach-driven organized sport and youth-driven informal sport play. The purpose of the present program of research was to examine the predominant interpersonal interactions occurring in organized sport and informal sport play contexts and their relationship to athlete development. Study 1 was methodological and presents the development and validation of an observational coding system designed to capture the motivational tone of youth sport coaches’ interactions with their athletes. Motivational tone represents a theoretically relevant but previously unexplored dimension of coaches’ interactive behaviour. Study 2 used the newly developed coding system from study 1 to examine the motivational tone of coach-athlete interactions in competitive youth volleyball...

This article explores the initial steps in developing and presenting Sport Psychology in a leadership and sport curriculum at Stellenbosch University's (SU) Centre for Human Performance Sciences' (CHPS) Academy for Girls' Leadership and Sport Development. Sport Psychology does not feature within the South African school curriculum specifically, yet the CHPS recognises the importance of exposing girls to the principles and skills of Sport Psychology and has a leadership curriculum for girls participating in sport to this end. This paper reports on a qualitative and exploratory reflective inquiry by the author who presented this theme. What was gained during this process, as well as the associated challenges encountered, suggest possible areas for research as well as changes and adjustments which could be made in similar Sport Psychology curricula.
