Recently semi-empirical models to estimate flow boiling heat transfer coefficient, saturated CHF and pressure drop in micro-scale channels have been proposed. Most of the models were developed based on elongated bubbles and annular flows in the view of the fact that these flow patterns are predominant in smaller channels. In these models, the liquid film thickness plays an important role and such a fact emphasizes that the accurate measurement of the liquid film thickness is a key point to validate them. On the other hand, several techniques have been successfully applied to measure liquid film thicknesses during condensation and evaporation under macro-scale conditions. However, although this subject has been targeted by several leading laboratories around the world, it seems that there is no conclusive result describing a successful technique capable of measuring dynamic liquid film thickness during evaporation inside micro-scale round channels. This work presents a comprehensive literature review of the methods used to measure liquid film thickness in macro- and micro-scale systems. The methods are described and the main difficulties related to their use in micro-scale systems are identified. Based on this discussion, the most promising methods to measure dynamic liquid film thickness in micro-scale channels are identified. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Cascas cilíndricas circulares com uma pequena variação de espessura ao longo de seu comprimento, quando submetidas à rotação, apresentam em alguns casos, deslocamentos elásticos de sua superfície externa, tendendo a uma forma de um oval. O objetivo deste trabalho é estabelecer a relação entre a variação de espessura das cascas cilíndricas com a sua deformação devida às forças centrífugas medida durante a rotação utilizando-se dois enfoques, um experimental e outro numérico, no caso o método de elementos finitos (MEF). As cascas cilíndricas estudadas tiveram sua espessura de parede medidas por meio de aparelho de ultra-som, mas por serem fabricadas em ferro fundido cinzento, as suas lamelas de grafita atuam como refletores, o que torna a medição imprecisa. Os resultados da análise numérica encontrados se relacionam bem com os experimentais de maneira qualitativa, mas divergem na forma quantitativa. Modelos de cascas com variação de espessura imposta também foram criados e analisados usando-se o método de elementos finitos de forma a se avaliar o comportamento da casca cilíndrica sob diversas configurações de distribuição da variação da espessura. Neste trabalho é descrito um procedimento para a determinação quantitativa da espessura e composição química de filmes finos, por fluorescência de raios X por dispersão de comprimento de onda (WDXRFS), utilizando-se o método de Parâmetros Fundamentais (FP). Este método foi validado dentro dos padrões de garantia de qualidade e aplicado as amostras de Al, Cr, TiO2, Ni, ZrO2 (monocamada) e Ni/Cr (duplacamada) sobre vidro; Ni sobre aço inoxidável e zinco metálico e TiO2 sobre ferro metálico (monocamada), as quais foram preparadas por deposição física de vapor (PVD). Os resultados das espessuras foram comparados com os métodos de Absorção (FRX-A) e Retroespalhamento de Rutherford (RBS), demonstrando a eficiência do método de parâmetros fundamentais. The aim of the present study was to measure full epidermal thickness, stratum corneum thickness, rete length, dermal papilla widening and suprapapillary epidermal thickness in psoriasis patients using a light microscope and computer-supported image analysis. The data obtained were analyzed in terms of patient age, type of psoriasis, total body surface area involvement, scalp and nail involvement, duration of psoriasis, and family history of the disease. The study was conducted on 64 patients and 57 controls whose skin biopsies were examined by light microscopy. The acquired microscopic images were transferred to a computer and measurements were made using image analysis. The skin biopsies, taken from different body areas, were examined for different parameters such as epidermal, corneal and suprapapillary epidermal thickness. The most prominent increase in thickness was detected in the palmar region. Corneal thickness was more pronounced in patients with scalp involvement than in patients without scalp involvement (t = -2.651, P = 0.008). The main objectives of this study were to verify the relationship among body condition at parturition, decrease of backfat thickness and weight during the lactation and the interval from weaning to oestrus of sows. It was performed with 10 gilts and 10 fifth, sixth and seventh parity Camborough sows. The average breeding age and weight of the gilts were respectively 231 days and 149.5 kg. During lactation all females were fed a wet diet (3.34 Mcal/kg, 17% CP), ad libitum. The average daily food consumption was 5.233 for gilts and 5.721 kg for multiparous sows. Ultrasonic measurements of backfat at the P2 site were recorded on day 6 before and days 2, 7, 14, 21 and 25 after parturition. Body weight was recorded on the same dates, except the day before parturition. Sows were divided into 2 groups according to their backfat thickness 6 days before parturition. Sows with a backfat thickness of 16 mm or less were assigned to the L-group, while those with a backfat thickness more than 16 mm were assigned to the H-group. After weaning, the interval from weaning to oestrus was recorded. The percentage of total weight loss during lactation was slightly higher (not significant) in the H-group (-4.26%) than in the L-group (-2.64%). OBJECTIVE: To describe and test a practical protocol to measure common carotid intima-media thickness that uses the combined values of two longitudinal examination angles to increase sensitivity. METHOD: Between February and September 2005, 206 patients underwent duplex scan examination of carotid vessels, and the intima-media thickness of 407 common carotids were measured in three angles: transversal, longitudinal posterolateral, and anterolateral, with three intima-media thickness measurements for each near and far wall. In addition to numbers obtained from the three angles of measurement, a fourth visual perspective was obtained by combining the intima-media thickness results of posterolateral and anterolateral longitudinal views and considering the thickest wall measurement. RESULTS: Two hundred seventy (66.3%) carotid arteries had an intima-media thickness thicker than 1mm. The mean intima-media thickness values achieved by the different incidences were 1.26±0.6mm (transversal), 1.17±0.54mm (longitudinal anterolateral), and 1.18±0.58mm (longitudinal posterolateral). A significant difference in intima-media thickness measurement values was observed when the three angles of examination plus the combined positive results of both longitudinal angles were compared by ANOVA (P=0.005). OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between pericoronary fat and the severity and extent of atherosclerosis, quantified using 64-multidetector computed tomography, in patients with suspected coronary artery disease. METHODS: The study population consisted of 131 patients who were clinically referred for noninvasive multislice computed tomography coronary angiography for the evaluation of coronary artery disease. Patients were classified as follows: no atherosclerosis, Group 1; nonobstructive atherosclerosis (luminal narrowing <50% in diameter), Group 2; and obstructive atherosclerosis (luminal narrowing ≥50%) in a single vessel or obstructive atherosclerosis in the left main coronary artery and/or multiple vessels, Group 3. Epicardial adipose tissue was defined as the adipose tissue between the surface of the heart and the visceral layer of the pericardium (visceral epicardium). Epicardial adipose tissue thickness (mm) was determined in the right ventricular anterior free wall. The mean thickness of the pericoronary fat surrounding the three coronary arteries was used for the analyses. RESULTS: The average thickness over all three regions was 13.2 ± 2.1 mm. Dental enamel thickness has received considerable attention in ecological models of the adaptive significance of primate morphology. Several authors have theorized that the degree of enamel thickness may reflect selective pressures related to the consumption of fallback foods (dietary items that may require complex processing and/or have low nutritional value) during times of preferred food scarcity. Others have speculated that enamel thickness reflects selection during mastication of foods with particular material properties (i.e., toughness and hardness). Orangutans prefer ripe fruit when available, but show interspecific and sex differences in the consumption of fallback foods (bark, leaves, and figs) and other preferred foods (certain seeds). Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) have also been reported to masticate more mechanically demanding foods than Sumatran orangutans (Pongo abelii). Introduction: There is the evidence that cortical bone thickness(CBT) and cortical bone quality(CBQ) can have a strong impact on primary stability and overall success of mini-implants. This study evaluated quantity(thickness) and quality(density) differences of cortical bone between interradicular sites to provide guidelines for mini-implant placement. Material and method: The maxilla or mandibula CT scans of 45 patients treated at the Department of Orthodontics of “Sapienza” University of Rome were selected. The selected patients were divided in two groups: adolescent group(aG)(range 12-18 years) and adult group(AG)(range19-50years). Using SimPlant software (Materialise, Leuven, Belgium),a program that allows reconstruction of 3D models and images of anatomical structures along planes and curves from data acquired with CT, the CBT and CBQ was measured at 2,4,6 and 8 mm intervals apical to the alveolar crest at each interradicular sites in both maxilla and mandible. Classical plane solutions of the theory of elasticity, which are sometimes more than 100 years old, are still used today and provide a framework for the analysis of many practical problems. But, strictly speaking, these analytical solutions are only applicable to plates with vanishing thickness or infinite thickness, where the stress state could be classified as plane stress or plane strain, respectively. However, the through-the-thickness stresses that exist in a plate of given thickness have a significant impact in a number of practical applications; and these stresses are often inevitably ignored due to the lack of analytical tools. This paper presents new analytical results for crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) for the through-the-thickness crack in infinite plates with various thicknesses. These results are based on the solution for an edge dislocation in infinite plate of arbitrary thickness and an application of the distributed dislocation technique. The analytical predictions of the CTOD and the constraint factor are compared with the three-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element (FE) results. Ziel dieser Untersuchung war es das Verhalten der Haftfestigkeitswerte im Scherversuch von verschiedenen Verblendsystemen bei unterschiedlichen Opakerschichtstärken von 65 µm, 128 µm und 240 µm, nach 15000 Zyklen Thermocycling zu beurteilen. Für die untersuchten Verblendsysteme Dialog (Schütz Dental), GC-Gradia (GC), Solidex (Shofu), sowie Sinfony (3M ESPE) wurden insgesamt 144 Prüfkörper erstellt, wobei jeweils 36 Prüfkörper pro Verblendsystem und 12 Prüfkörper pro untersuchter Opakerschichtstärke untersucht wurden. Die Scherversuche erfolgten an der Universalprüfmaschine Zwick 1454 in Anlehnung an die ISO-NORM 10477, wobei die Vorschubgeschwindigkeit 1mm/min betrug. Es wurde bei den Scherversuchen ein Scherstempel der Firma Wolhaupter mit einem genormten Spanwinkel von 10° eingesetzt, welcher einen definierten Abstand von 0,5 mm zur Metalloberfläche hatte. In einem Kraft-Wege Diagramm wurden die Kräfte festgehalten, die zum Bruch führten und anschließend mit dem Mikroskop bei 6,3 facher Vergrößerung die Verbundfläche bestimmt und anhand dieser die Haftfestigkeit des Prüfzylinders errechnet, sowie der Bruchmodus bestimmt. METHODS: Fifty-five newly diagnosed primary open-angle glaucoma patients submitted to central corneal thickness measurements and water drinking test were enrolled in this retrospective study.;. Patients were divided into three groups according to their central corneal thickness. Pearson's Correlation test was performed in the groups with lower and higher pachymetric values. RESULTS: The mean age was 65,65 ± 28,28 years; 63,63% were female and 52,72% were caucasian. The mean central corneal thickness was 544,32 ± 36,86 µm, and the mean baseline intraocular pressure was 23,36 ± 6,26 mmHg. Investigou-se a influência da inclinação das paredes de dentina (paralela ou perpendicular à ação da gravidade) e da variação regional dos espécimes (terços cervical ou oclusal) na resistência adesiva e na espessura da camada de adesivo. Vinte e cinco molares humanos foram seccionados no sentido mésio-distal e paralelamente ao seu longo eixo, obtendo-se secções vestibulares e linguais, as quais foram lixadas produzindo-se superfícies planas de dentina. Sistemas adesivos (Adper Single Bond-SB e Prime & Bond 2.1- PB2.1) foram aplicados na dentina, ora paralelamente ora perpendicularmente à ação da gravidade, padronizando-se o volume de adesivo (3,5 µl por gota) através do uso de uma micropipeta e seguindo-se as instruções dos fabricantes. Os grupos de estudo foram: 1A (SB, paralelo), 1B (SB, perpendicular), 2A (PB2.1, paralelo) e 2B (PB2.1, perpendicular). Após 24h de armazenamento em água deionizada a 37°C, espécimes foram preparados na forma de palitos de dentina com área adesiva de 0,8 mm2, aproximadamente. The objective of this work is to develop a film thickness and velocity measurement technique using laser intensity measurement in liquid film flow. This technique was developed for annular flow studies, but it has been scarcely used due to the equipment's complexity, as compared with other techniques. The laser technique uses the reflection of the laser beam in water interface and the attenuation of its intensity to determine the interface position. Thus, the relation between intensity and thickness must be obtained by calibration. A theoretical model was proposed for the optical phenomena present in the film thickness measurement and its results were compared with experimental results using a planar mirror. A controlled experiment was conducted using one-dimensional waves in a short channel where the wave frequencies were varied by changing the vibrator's frequency and the film thickness was modified by changing the liquid volume. The reference film thickness was obtained by the analysis of photographic data taken through the transparent channel walls, allowing the comparison to the results from the laser technique. The experimental results for the film thickness presented a good agreement with the reference thickness from photographic data. Glazing is a technique used to retard fish deterioration during storage. This work focuses on the study of distinct variables (fish temperature, coating temperature, dipping time) that affect the thickness of edible coatings (water glazing and 1.5% chitosan) applied on frozen fish. Samples of frozen Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) at -15, -20, and -25 °C were either glazed with water at 0.5, 1.5 or 2.5 °C or coated with 1.5% chitosan solution at 2.5, 5 or 8 °C, by dipping during 10 to 60 s. For both water and chitosan coatings, lowering the salmon and coating solution temperatures resulted in an increase of coating thickness. At the same conditions, higher thickness values were obtained when using chitosan (max. thickness of 1.41±0.05 mm) compared to water (max. thickness of 0.84±0.03 mm). Freezing temperature and crystallization heat were found to be lower for 1.5% chitosan solution than for water, thus favoring phase change. Salmon temperature profiles allowed determining, for different dipping conditions, whether the salmon temperature was within food safety standards to prevent the growth of pathogenic microorganisms. The concept of safe dipping time is proposed to define how long a frozen product can be dipped into a solution without the temperature raising to a point where it can constitute a hazard.

Correlation between central corneal thickness and intraocular pressure peak and fluctuation during the water drinking test in glaucoma patients

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation between central corneal thickness and outflow facility assessed by intraocular pressure peak and fluctuation during the water drinking test. METHODS: Fifty-five newly diagnosed primary open-angle glaucoma patients submitted to central corneal thickness measurements and water drinking test were enrolled in this retrospective study.;. Patients were divided into three groups according to their central corneal thickness. Pearson's Correlation test was performed in the groups with lower and higher pachymetric values. RESULTS: The mean age was 65,65 ± 28,28 years; 63,63% were female and 52,72% were caucasian. The mean central corneal thickness was 544,32 ± 36,86 µm, and the mean baseline intraocular pressure was 23,36 ± 6,26 mmHg. During the water drinking test, the mean intraocular pressure peak and mean intraocular pressure fluctuation were 30,43 ± 8,13 mmHg and 31,46 ± 18,46%, respectively. OBJECTIVE: To describe and test a practical protocol to measure common carotid intima-media thickness that uses the combined values of two longitudinal examination angles to increase sensitivity. METHOD: Between February and September 2005, 206 patients underwent duplex scan examination of carotid vessels, and the intima-media thickness of 407 common carotids were measured in three angles: transversal, longitudinal posterolateral, and anterolateral, with three intima-media thickness measurements for each near and far wall. In addition to numbers obtained from the three angles of measurement, a fourth visual perspective was obtained by combining the intima-media thickness results of posterolateral and anterolateral longitudinal views and considering the thickest wall measurement. RESULTS: Two hundred seventy (66.3%) carotid arteries had an intima-media thickness thicker than 1mm. The mean intima-media thickness values achieved by the different incidences were 1.26±0.6mm (transversal), 1.17±0.54mm (longitudinal anterolateral), and 1.18±0.58mm (longitudinal posterolateral). A significant difference in intima-media thickness measurement values was observed when the three angles of examination plus the combined positive results of both longitudinal angles were compared by ANOVA (P=0.005). Este trabalho teve como objetivo verificar a relação entre a condição corporal na época do parto, a diminuição da espessura de toucinho e de peso corporal durante a lactação e o intervalo desmama-cio em fêmeas suínas. Vinte porcas Camborough, sendo 10 marrãs e 10 porcas adultas com a ordem de parto variando entre o 5º, 6º e 7º partos, foram divididas em dois grupos experimentais seis dias antes do parto previsto. A média de idade e de peso das marrãs por ocasião da cobertura foi de 231 dias e 149,5 kg, respectivamente. Durante a lactação, os animais foram alimentados com ração lactação molhada, à vontade (3,34 Mcal/kg e 17% PB). O consumo médio de ração foi de 5,233 kg para as marrãs e de 5,721 kg para as porcas. O grupo-H constituído de 11 fêmeas com espessura de toucinho sobre o ponto P2 superior a 16 mm, e o grupo-L de 9 fêmeas com espessura de toucinho igual ou inferior a 16 mm. As mensurações de espessura do toucinho sobre o ponto P2 foram feitas 6 dias antes do parto e 2, 7, 14, 21 e 25 dias após o parto. Background and Objectives: Our study aims to assess retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in patients affected by schizophrenia. Methods: Ten schizophrenic patients (mean age 39 +/- 13 years, best corrected visual acuity > 20/20, refractive error between +/-2 diopters, and intraocular pressure <18 mmHg) were enrolled. They were compared with 10 age-matched controls. In all subjects, optic nerve head (ONH) measurements, peripapillary RNFL thickness, macular thickness and volume were measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT). Results: Schizophrenic patients showed an statistically significant reduction of the overall RNFL thickness (95+/-13 µm, range: 53-110) compared with those values observed in control eyes (103+/-8 µm, range: 88-119) (p = 0.047, Mann-Whitney U test). We also observed reduced peripapillary RNFL thickness in nasal quadrant in schizophrenic patients (75+/-17 µm, range: 41-111) when compared with controls (84+/-10 µm, range: 67-105) (p = 0.048, Mann-Whitney U test).
