A comparison of the tourist resorts chosen by visitors to Portugal with the places described in accounts of journeys and in travel guides since the 18th century reveals a high degree of continuity as regards preferences for certain spaces, including monasteries, convents and palaces, as well as the respective surroundings. They form what might be termed a “classic itinerary”, which includes the sites in Portugal which were regarded, and still are, as most worth visiting for their great historical and artistic interest and importance. Times have changed and new forms of tourism are now the fashion: tourist attractions are seen from a different perspective and travellers seek out new places and refuges, rural paradises, exotic shores and regional gastronomic delights. The preferred itinerary of those who visit Portugal today, just like that of 18th-century travellers, still takes in the monasteries of Alcobaça, Batalha and the Hieronymites, the convent of Mafra, and Sintra palace and its surroundings. In this paper we seek to highlight the following aspects by means of the comparison of the recommendations contained in contemporary travel guides and 18th-century travellers’ accounts: - the reasons why travellers and tourists in each era include these spaces in their Portuguese travel itineraries (architectural importance...

In recent years, tourism has experienced increasing interest from researchers in various areas, a fact that has resulted not only in a diversity of approaches from which this theme can be treated, but also in the uncovering of the interconnections that exist between tourism and the development of the economy of transport and of society. Thus, tourist growth in each country has been the subject of several studies, ranging from economics to the political and cultural aspects associated with publicizing the country as well as to the links between tourism and transport developments. Research on the institutions promoting tourism and the magazines in which it is advertised has led to an understanding of the role that professionals such as engineers have played in promoting the activity and how they have long regarded it as a form of development for the economy and for transport. The study of travel guides is another possible approach to understanding the links between tourism and transport. Utilitarian in their nature, travel guides are a reflection of the economic, social, cultural and technological changes that, over time, have been introduced into travel for cultural purposes or for summer vacations, and which gradually have come to be participated in by increasingly larger social groups. The analysis of various tourist guides allows for an approach to various themes...

In recent years, tourism has experienced increasing interest from researchers in various areas, a fact that has resulted not only in a diversity of approaches from which this theme can be treated, but also in the uncovering of the interconnections that exist between tourism and the development of the economy of transport and of society2. While tourism is one of the most important economic activities in the Caribbean, its reliance is based uniquely on the natural environment, indicating the resource base upon which all of this economic activity is based, is however fragile. Thus, sustainable tourism, and its economic benefits require ensuring that the environmental resources the sector relies on, are managed responsibly by the countries of the Caribbean, the tourism/travel industry, and the visitors themselves. The study examines the links between tourism, and environment, pointing at the magnitude of environmental threats, and the role of information, at creating strong incentives, addressing environmental problems certification schemes, to allow credible advertisement of its environmental quality. Capturing tourism economic "rents" - defined as an excess return to an asset - is viewed as a policy question for governments, on how to use these rents effectively. Mechanisms to capture rents include charging user fees when accessing a particular environmental resource...

Knowing how consumers perceive travel websites can help practitioners better understand consumers’ online requirements. This paper reports the findings of a longitudinal study that investigated the changes and trends in the profile and behavior of online travel-website users in Hong Kong. The profiles of e-buyers and e-browsers in 2009, when compared with those established by prior studies conducted in 2000 and 2007, point in a new direction for practitioners and researchers investigating online travelwebsite user behavior. The results indicated that more middle-aged consumers have become online travel-website users, and that website security and price are perceived to be the most important factors for travel-website use by both e-browsers and e-buyers.

With the beginning of airline deregulations in 1978, U.S. domestic operations were in for a period of turmoil, adjustment, vibrancy, entrepreneurship, and change. A great deal has been written about the effects of deregulation on airlines and their personnel, and on the public at large. Less attention has been paid to the effects on travel agents and on the seminal role of computerized reservations systems (CRSs) in the flowering of travel agencies. This article examines both of these phenomena.

U.S. visitor demand for the China travel experience is anticipated to rise significantly through 2105, causing the Chinese government to employ 100 million service providers over the next six years and raising concern about service delivery and perceptions of the on-site China experience. In an effort to better understand these issues concerning U.S. visitors, this study investigated two specific types of U.S. travelers to China: Group Package Tour (GPT) visitors and Free Independent Travel (FIT) visitors. Results indicated that GPT visitors were more likely to be older and have higher household income than FIT visitors. Four trip-related characteristics of GPT and FIT visitors were found to be significantly different, with GPT visitors showing higher levels of satisfaction with the overall China on-site travel experience.

The aim of this study is to analyze the perception of European destinations through the eyes of Indian Bollywood film viewers to determine how perception is influenced by what is viewed in films. Researchers surveyed Indian consumers and collected 670 usable surveys. European destinations were divided into top five and bottom five destinations for Indian tourists, and data was then compared to world tourism statistics. Results indicate differences in destination preference among Bollywood viewers and worldwide tourist trends. Findings indicate that prominently featuring a landscape within Bollywood films can significantly impact Indians’ perception on the destinations’ image. European countries frequently portrayed in films have higher marks on multiple perception categories than those not featured in blockbuster Bollywood films.

Little research has been completed regarding spring break motivations and behaviors of American students in foreign destinations, specifically in Mexico. This paper looks at push and pull motivations in relation to drug and alcohol consumption and findings indicate greater drug and alcohol use among those who selected “party reputation” and “to go wild” as travel motivations. Binge drinking, sexual activity, and drug use among students on spring break in Acapulco, Mexico were also analyzed and compared to past findings within the United States. Results suggest that students are involved in heavy alcohol consumption and significant drug use. Additionally, high rates of sexual activity occur on spring break and results suggest low condom use, placing students at higher risks for the contraction of sexually transmitted infections.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of Hollywood movies and television (movies/TV) on US viewer’s motivation to travel to and participate in activities featured in Hollywood movies/TV productions. A survey was administered in an online format to a convenience sample of 433 respondents via Qualtrics. Factor analysis, correlation, and regression was employed to explore relationships between the variables. Findings identified a profile of Hollywood movies/TV viewers, sources of information used to determine destination choice, and level of involvement among viewers of Hollywood movies/TV productions. Additionally, this study explored the relationships between Hollywood movies/TV productions, tourist motivations, and the propensity to participate in activities featured. Findings indicate that Hollywood movies/TV productions have a positive impact on viewer involvement and that movie/TV related tourism is likely to be affected by movie and TV viewing preference and destination image. The results identify that the predictor “TV viewing behavior” is the strongest predictor of entertainmentmotivated tourism, followed by “destination image” and “movie viewing behavior.” Findings also indicate that “destination image” is the strongest predictor of movie-related activities and that the image portrayed in a movie does influence the viewer’s inclination to visit and participate in activities featured in a movie.

Asia is experiencing a rapid growth in intra-Asian tourism, and is finding that the spending priorities of these new visitor markets is quite different from traditional markets. Not only have Hong Kong's markets changed, but the economic operational environment is becoming increasingly difficult as a result of the change in sovereignty in 1997, increasing land prices, and new regulations. The current structure of the hotel industry is out of balance with the demands of these new markets. Hong Kong now needs to consider some intervention in the hotel industry to further encourage the development of properties in this mid-market.

The economy of the Palestinian territories, hampered by years of conflict, occupation, and insecurity remains dependent on foreign aid with the public sector remaining the largest employer. However, it is critical that serious efforts are made to look at medium term measures that can reverse current negative trends and put the Palestinian economy on a path to sustainable growth. The Palestinian tourism industry has the necessary infrastructure, facilities and attractions to become a viable and independent destination. However, the industry is not developed fully across the value chain resulting in leakages of tourism revenue. Rural areas did not benefit from the recent growth, and were excluded from the mainstream tourism routes. In 2010, the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities (MOTA) released a national strategy that carried the vision of 'promoting the national image of Palestine as a safe, hospitable, independent destination, rich in religious, cultural, historical and natural resources'. The objectives of the master plan are to increase the number of visitors...

It also outlines the analytical foundations for technical assistance that will be provided to Ministry of Culture and Tourism (MoCT) by the World Bank-funded Ethiopian Sustainable Tourism Development Program (ESTDP). This study uses the world economic forum tourism and travel competitiveness index and International Finance Corporation (IFC) Doing Business report to benchmark Ethiopia s tourism competitiveness with respect to that of countries such Tanzania, Kenya, Egypt, and South Africa. It also draws lessons from and measures the tourism sector against other successful national economic sectors, such as floriculture. The focus of this study is on competitiveness at the value chain and destination levels. It identifies constraints affecting competitiveness and proposes strategic interventions that can help to address these challenges by taking advantage of existing opportunities. This study is mainly prepared for Ethiopia s tourism policymakers, particularly in MoCT. Secondary audiences include tourism-related ministries and public institutions...

This paper aims to fill a literature gap and to analyze empirically senior universities in Portugal related to the impact of experimental learning on courses offered. Focus will be given to the elderly population motivations to experiment new cultural expressions and the impact this process may have on their cognitive abilities/culture intelligence. Social tourism becomes increasingly important given the lack of elderly economic means to support travel expenses and ways to save for leisure time after retirement. Senior university and social tourism can together offer this possibility. The first part represents an introduction to the topic of social travel. The second part focuses on the major conceptual aspects - culture, experimental knowledge, cultural intelligence adapted to senior universities courses - to support and justify the hypotheses to be tested.
