Este trabalho teve sua origem na constatação de alguns aspectos observados em questionários de inscrição para o curso "Utilização de Objetos de Aprendizagem em Sala de Aula Mediatizados pelas Tecnologias Digitais", oferecido pelo Laboratório de Inovação Tecnológica Aplicada na Educação - LANTEC, da Faculdade de Educação da Universidade Estadual de Campinas - UNICAMP. A maioria dos inscritos, professores de matemática do Ensino Fundamental I e II, da rede pública de ensino de todo o Brasil, apontava a utilização social da rede Facebook. This work is the result of a qualitative research on participative nature that arouse from the study of facts and analysis of bachelor in mathematics II (DID2), during the first semester of 2008 in the college of mathematics and statistics at Goiás Federal University (UFG). The main purpose of this research was to verify the range on which the virtual classes could either or neither contribute to the learning process. The study was shaped according to 50% of presence classes and 50% of non presence ones. Virtual learning was used for non presence activities (AVA) Moodle. In the context of the research, the researcher was a copartner in the working up and effective accomplishment of pedagogical activities and virtual ones (AVA), as well as a researcher in exercise in the presence and non presence activities, developed by his/her professor. This case study examines factors that facilitate and impede the use of ICT within education and identifies factors that are specific to adult education. This study primarily investigates the role of ICT within two adult education programmes, namely the Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (VTOS) and the Back to Education Initiative (BTEI) within an Adult Education and Training Centre (AETC) in Ireland. Primary research involved observing the eight teachers in the AETC to identify if and how they use ICT within their specific subject area. In addition, questionnaires were disseminated to these teachers and to a random sample of 30 learners, 15 learners from each programme. The Department of Education and Skills (DES) and the National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE) has encouraged and supported the integration of ICT with the Primary School Curriculum (1999) by providing funding, professional development and ongoing support for schools and teachers. This study investigates the effectiveness of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) technologies for teaching Irish grammar to sixth class students in primary school. Following teacher-only and computer-only teaching sessions, quantitative data was obtained by examining the participants collectively. The participants‟ attitudes towards ICT in education were also explored by means of focus group interviews and open-ended questions in the questionnaire, providing qualitative data. The findings of this case study reveal that students can learn equally well from computer-only tuition as teacher-only tuition. However, the students prefer lessons that include human interaction and are better motivated to learn when a teacher takes part in lessons. The participants in this study state that greater use can be made of ICT in lessons.

The use of technology in schools is no longer the topic of educational debates, but how to ensure that technology is used effectively continues to be the focal point of discussions. The role of the principal in facilitating the successful integration of technology in the school is well established. To that end, the Florida Department of Education implemented the FloridaLeaders.net: a three-year professional development project in technology for school administrators. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of this professional development project on integrating technology in elementary schools. ^ The study compared a group of schools whose principals have participated in the FloridaLeaders.net (FLN) program with schools whose principals have not participated in the program. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the use of technology on students’ mathematics achievement, particularly the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) mathematics results.^ Eleven schools within the Miami-Dade County Public School System participated in a pilot program on the use of Geometers Sketchpad (GSP). Three of these schools were randomly selected for this study. Each school sent a teacher to a summer in-service training program on how to use GSP to teach geometry. In each school, the GSP class and a traditional geometry class taught by the same teacher were the study participants. Students’ mathematics FCAT results were examined to determine if the GSP produced any effects. Students’ scores were compared based on assignment to the control or experimental group as well as gender and SES. SES measurements were based on whether students qualified for free lunch.^ The findings of the study revealed a significant difference in the FCAT mathematics scores of students who were taught geometry using GSP compared to those who used the traditional method. Career Academy instructors’ technical literacy is vital to the academic success of students. This nonexperimental ex post facto study examined the relationships between the level of technical literacy of instructors in career academies and student academic performance. It was also undertaken to explore the relationship between the pedagogical training of instructors and the academic performance of students. Out of a heterogeneous population of 564 teachers in six targeted schools, 136 teachers (26.0 %) responded to an online survey. The survey was designed to gather demographic and teaching experience data. Each demographic item was linked by researchers to teachers’ technology use in the classroom. Student achievement was measured by student learning gains as assessed by the reading section of the FCAT from the previous to the present school year. Linear and hierarchical regressions were conducted to examine the research questions. To clarify the possibility of teacher gender and teacher race/ethnic group differences by research variable, a series of one-way ANOVAs were conducted. This short country report, a result of larger Information for Development Program (infoDev) - supported survey of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in education in Africa, provides a general overview of current activities and issues related to ICT use in education in the country. Cameroon is among the sub-Saharan African countries that are making enormous progress in the use of the ICTs in the various development sectors, including education. Private schools introduced ICTs into their curricula in the 1990s, but there is no specific policy guiding the teaching or use of ICTs in education, which has lead to each private school applying its own teaching method or program. ICTs were officially introduced into education in 2001 by the president. The Cyber Education Project launched since then by the government targets two sectors: secondary and tertiary education. Primary schools are not yet concerned. The project started a slowly, but is now gaining speed. Studying the barriers to the use of ICT in education may assist teachers to overcome these barriers and have successful integration of ICT in the future. The purpose of this case study was to examine the factors affecting the use and integration of ICT in an Irish Adult Education and Training Centre (AETC). This study investigates the role of ICT in two Adult Education Programmes, the Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (VTOS) and the Youthreach Programme within an AETC in the South West of Ireland. Both qualitative and quantitative research methodology was utilised in this study. The qualitative research data consisted of seven in-depth interviews with staff and students in the Adult Education and Training Centre. The quantitative research data was gathered with the aid of a questionnaire and class observations. Forty eight questionnaires were completed by staff and students in the Adult Education and Training Centre and five classes were observed. The results of the Case study show the major issues for the VTOS Programme are availability of ICT and the fact that they have no interactive whiteboards available to them. In the Youthreach Programme even though they have full ICT equipment available to them in all their classrooms they do not have full ICT integration. All AETC teachers should attend some kind of professional development training. The author suggests that if these can be addressed this AETC will continue to offer an excellent ICT experience to its adult learners.

This thesis presents lessons from the development of an on-line, web-based feedback system and preliminary analysis of the socio-technical interactions associated with the specification, design and use of this system. The system has been designed to facilitate many forms of feedback in educational environments. Novel technical components of the system include: (1) a highly detailed and flexible data model representing the social-system feedback loops, (2) reusable feedback objects and sub-objects which minimize content entry requirements while improving data aggregation capabilities, and (3) feedback objects which respond dynamically based on the context in which they are used. Novel social system learning associated with this thesis centers on the mechanisms to facilitate feedback in academic and industry learning environments. This thesis features the design, implementation, and preliminary use of the Online Feedback Organization, Requesting and Monitoring for Educators (OnFORME) system. OnFORME was created to enable ubiquitous feedback collection in a semi-transparent manner for educators in both academic and corporate training environments. OnFORME provides a way for educators to quickly author feedback objects (e.g. surveys) and publish them via the World Wide Web so that students can easily respond. Despite its development and suitability to many specialties of medicine for the past forty years and the driving demands of an aging population, telemedicine has not made significant progress in deployment or commercialization. Why is this? Three case studies of health networks were used to identify the barriers to the widespread use of telemedicine in home healthcare and other applications of medicine. These barriers were further described and analyzed using the framework for disruptive technologies presented in Clayton Christensen' s The Innovator' s Dilemma. Although many studies assert that the slow adoption rate of telemedicine is explained by questions of efficacy and cost, this analysis proposes that the change in value networks posed by telemedicine technology is the greatest reason for its anemic implementation. Telemedicine changes the structure of the healthcare sector changing the organizational dynamics and values of the many players. The changes in structure are explored using the case studies and the successes and failures experienced by the health networks when implementing telemedicine across medical specialties. In order to harness this technology, recommendations are directed at organizations that need to evaluate new technologies differently and change their behavior with respect to competitors. Reading and writing have become the predominant way of acquiring and expressing intellect in Western culture. Somewhere along the way, the ability to write has become completely identified with intellectual power, creating a graphocentric myopia concerning the very nature and transfer of knowledge. One of the effects of graphocentrism is a conflation of concepts proper to knowledge in general with concepts specific to written expression. The words 'literate' and 'literacy' themselves are a simple case: their connotations sometimes focus on the process of reading text and sometimes on the kinds of knowledge that happen to be associated in our culture with people who read many books. This thesis has a conceptual and an empirical component. On the conceptual side a central task is to disengage certain concepts that have become conflated by defining new terms. Our vocabulary is insufficient to describe alternatives that serve some or all of the functions of writing and reading in a different modality. As a first step, I introduce a new word to provide a counterpart to writing in a spoken modality: speak + write = sprite. Studies of computers and education have failed to account for the relevance and importance of tacit assumptions and unquestioned expectations that underlie educational technology practices. A major premise of this dissertation is that it is these taken-for-granted interpretations of technology that most significantly influence how technology is used in the sphere of education. It is thus analytically useful to examine technology use in education by investigating the assumptions on which currently pervasive educational technology practices are built. I employ the concept of "mental models" to study current educational technology practices. An examination of the literature revealed key elements of the prevailing mental model of technology in education, which I call the mental model of computers as information technology and multimedia machines. In this mental model, computer technology is viewed as a means to provide students and teachers with Internet connectivity and access to extensive, up-to-date information. The computer's multimedia authoring capacity can then be utilized to synthesize the wealth of information culled from Internet sources into presentations with integrated text, graphics, sound, and video. The Colombian government is working on solutions to widen the coverage of higher education which is currently around 21%. One of the solutions to handle this major problem in rural and remote areas, but also in some towns and cities where there is either not enough capacity in the current traditional higher institutions, or its quality is poor, or there is little to no supply is Virtual Education. The current stage of higher distance education in Colombia is characterized by a fragmented supply with weaknesses in defining and adopting a pedagogical model, the use of technology capabilities, the organizational structure to support virtual education, and the planning and quality assurance processes. Institutions offering distance services have opportunities for improvement and innovative developments but they lack the necessary resources. Based on this diagnosis, our challenge in coverage of higher education, and the elements identified from seven international experiences studied, a Virtual University is proposed with the purpose of being an 'Open and distance learning university' with "open" meaning access to everybody and "distance" including the appropriate technologies and pedagogical models to offer distance education. Mouza, Chrystalla; The use of technology in education is increasing in Early Care and Education (ECE) programs as a tool for improving program quality in many interesting ways (Donahue, 2003). Participation in a Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS) has become the standard by which ECE programs obtain the knowledge and resources to improve quality with grant funding and affordable professional development (PD). In Delaware, the program administrator, whose role is dynamic, demanding, and critical to the success of the program, leads this journey in the ECE setting. While administrators are required to complete PD annually, little empirical research has been dedicated to the process by which they acquire new knowledge, skills and dispositions (Sheridan, 2009). There is a need to understand how well prepared they are to engage with new forms of PD, which typically leverage technology to offer flexibility, cross state collaboration, and self-paced learning that is appropriate for busy adult learners. This study found that administrators in Delaware have access to technology and that they are eager for more exposure and training related to using it at work. Additionally, the results showed that they are generally comfortable with technology and use it currently. A colaboração é uma ação social, na qual pessoas compartilham objetivos e aprendem juntas, visando superar desafios e construir conhecimentos. Nesta ação, destacamos o suporte das tecnologias da informação e da comunicação para o desenvolvimento deste tipo de atividade, independentemente de tempo e espaço, oferecendo vantagens para organização, compartilhamento, registro de informações e oferta de ferramentas para a comunicação e construção de textos coletivos. A partir destes pontos, investigamos o uso de tecnologias consideradas colaborativas em ambientes escolares. Neste trabalho, analisamos as relações e as compreensões dos professores sobre a colaboração e o uso de tecnologias na educação. A partir da pesquisa realizada numa escola pública de Ensino Fundamental de Florianópolis, em Santa Catarina, abrangendo a proposta de atividades com aos alunos e a coleta de dados, apresentamos os resultados relacionados à compreensão e ao uso da colaboração como estratégia pedagógica e da tecnologia, principalmente a Internet.
