RAMOS, Danilo.

To listen to the brain activities as a piece of music, we proposed the scale-free brainwave music (SFBM) technology, which translated scalp EEGs into music notes according to the power law of both EEG and music. In the present study, the methodology was extended for deriving a quartet from multi-channel EEGs with artistic beat and tonality filtering. EEG data from multiple electrodes were first translated into MIDI sequences by SFBM, respectively. Then, these sequences were processed by a beat filter which adjusted the duration of notes in terms of the characteristic frequency. And the sequences were further filtered from atonal to tonal according to a key defined by the analysis of the original music pieces. Resting EEGs with eyes closed and open of 40 subjects were utilized for music generation. The results revealed that the scale-free exponents of the music before and after filtering were different: the filtered music showed larger variety between the eyes-closed (EC) and eyes-open (EO) conditions, and the pitch scale exponents of the filtered music were closer to 1 and thus it was more approximate to the classical music. Furthermore, the tempo of the filtered music with eyes closed was significantly slower than that with eyes open. With the original materials obtained from multi-channel EEGs...

xiii, 147 leaves ; 28 cm.; Ever-increasing attrition statistics cite unsatisfactory work conditions and lack of administrative support as reasons for leaving the field of music education, yet more music teachers remain in the profession than those who leave. In this qualitative study I investigated what enables the development and support of career music educators.
Research questions probed why music teachers remain in their field and what support systems and work conditions are conducive to their retention. Qualitative research protocols for focus group interviews were utilized to answer these questions. Subjects with teaching experience ranging from 5 to 23 years were organized into categories of school level teaching assignments and levels of experience for interactive conversations with other music teachers. In these focus groups, 15 participants discussed their personal experiences and reasons for continued work in music education. Field notes and audiotapes of the groups’ interviews were transcribed and analyzed to provide insights into individual reasons for career longevity. These data were then interpreted to answer the posed research questions.
Responses from the focus group interviews revealed that career music educators find adequate music supplies and materials...

This work discusses the role of the harpsichord in Brazilian contemporary music particularly in chamber music. After a brief contextualization of harpsichord in Brazilian chamber music, the work develops in five main parts, namely: part 1 a description of the harpsichord since its origins in the monochord of Pythagoras until the models constructed in present time; part 2 the harpsichord s mechanism is presented in such a way as to elucidate the instrument performance possibilities; part 3 an analysis of idiomatic aspects of the instrument and their influence in interpretative and compositional decisions; part 4 the available repertoire and the process used to organize it including Brazilian solo and chamber music for the instrument. The works are organized by composer, date and medium; part 5 - analytical comments of selected works to be presented in the masters recital. The comments combine Jan La Rue s view with the idiomatic aspects discussed in the part 3 of this paper. The commentaries consider both compositional and performance possibilities. Aspects analyzed include form, instrumentation, level of difficulty, dynamics indication, registration, metric, fingering, use of expanded technique, performance notes and ad-libitum passages (or random elements). As a conclusion...

The present study aimed to investigate whether the psychodramatic theory can broaden the understanding of the client’s expression through the musical composition experience during the music therapeutic process regarding the phase of music therapeutic analysis. A qualitative research was proposed involving two case studies which allowed a better practical understanding of the investigated theme. Data collection was performed in three phases: recruitment of research participants, initial interview, and music-therapeutic process. Two individual music therapeutic processes were carried out, in which the participants had 11 and 16 sessions with the researcher. During the sessions, the following musical experiences in music therapy were used: improvisation, receptive, re-creative, and composition, as well as psychodrama techniques adapted to music therapy. The results demonstrated that the initial goals were achieved and it was also possible to broaden not only the understanding of the music therapeutic analysis phase in the interfaces with psychodrama, but of the whole process as well. Moreover, some recommendations were established regarding the use of the musical composition experience, as well as its variations, among which the following can be mentioned: the need that the music therapist be attentive to the musical complexity of the experience to be used; the importance of the fact that the client has already tried the other musical experiences before performing the musical composition; the relevance of the music therapeutic analysis observing the proximity and repetition of the notes...

peer-reviewed; Music transcription is a complex cognitive task that requires a trained musician to listen to a piece of music, write down what notes were played and the timing of the notes. The task is further complicated if the music is polyphonic, where several notes are played simultaneously, requiring the musician to listen repeatedly to the piece of music so as to work out the notes that were played and their timing. This thesis describes a polyphonic note detection system based on a simple masking technique that can accurately transcribe chords and polyphonic piano music. The system, developed in MATLAB, will take input files in .wav format. The music is segmented by using Note Average Energy (NAE) onset detection. The onsets are used to segment the music into note windows which are then analysed using the FFT. Following the extraction and compilation of the frequency peaks in each note window, an iterative masking procedure is used to detect and successively extract the notes and any associated harmonics. The masking procedure uses a database of note masks compiled from multiple note examples using both monophonic and polyphonic examples. The instrument modeled in the work described in this thesis is the Technics KN800 PCM digital keyboard. Once the .wav files have been input into the system...

This thesis explores the significance of a Slovak traditional music and dance performance in Melbourne in October 2007 by Lucnica: Slovak National Folklore Ballet’. While the troupe represents a genre of traditional music performance that is revered by many Slovaks, it is also criticized in the community and scholarly narratives as being ‘artificial’. This thesis shows that Lucnica’s performances are deeply significant, however, and that they constitute a legitimate form of music folklore practice for performers and Slovak audiences, embodying the Slovak landscape and history, despite artistic modifications. However, by taking an interactional viewpoint, this thesis shows that on foreign soil, complex meanings were thrown into relief. While Lucnica’s stated mission is to spread Slovak traditional music culture abroad, it was found that in multicultural Melbourne, Lucnica’s performance generated a variety of discursive strands. The same performance confirmed and celebrated Slovak ethnicity for Slovak Australians, and at the same time, contributed to the discourse of British hegemony and marginalization of the same. A second, but equally important focus of the thesis, is that it addresses the dialectic between theory and data. Ethnographic notes were analyzed according to Goffman’s model for non-verbal interaction...

Each discipline has its own way of representing and evaluating knowledge which is reflected in its discourse. Success for students involves appropriately adopting this discourse in order to demonstrate the acquisition of knowledge and the internalisation of both values and forms of valuing. In creative disciplines such as music performance, written tasks are not the main form of assessment but are often required; little research however has been conducted into writing about music. This study represents an analysis of writing about music. This thesis investigates musical discourse by taking a cohort of six local students of Jazz Performance. Its corpus is formed by the 5000-word research projects each student wrote as part of their Honours year. The thesis focuses on three aspects of musical discourse in the corpus: the multisemiotic representation of jazz through the use and incorporation of music notation, the evaluation of jazz through evaluative language, and the legitimation of jazz through the positioning of knowers. Music notation is considered as part of a social semiotic system and its selection, repurposing and integration into the texts is analysed. The elaboration of the notation through the accompanying linguistic text is also examined to consider how information is variously unpacked and repacked from the notation to enable greater abstraction and generalisation and how the examples are grounded in the performances they come from. The examination of evaluative language reveals underlying priorities in the performance of jazz and in particular how the focal musicians of the research projects are established as worthy of research. The representation and structuring of knowers is held to be particularly important in jazz performance; this is investigated with particular focus on the student writers as well as the focal musicians to reveal the legitimation of jazz performance. The representation with notation and the legitimation with esteemed knowers together demonstrate the jazz understanding which underlies student research into jazz performance.; Thesis (Ph.D.) -- University of Adelaide...

This paper examines the impact of a unique community engagement program called ??Cantar??!, which places Mexican composers in Minnesota classrooms to serve as composers-in-residence. Since 2008, the Minnesota-based chorus VocalEssence has connected eight different Mexican composers with more than 20 school, college and community choruses. Urban, suburban and rural communities have participated. The composers work directly with the singers and write new choral works specifically for each group. Through the VocalEssence !Cantar??! program, more than 5000 people have heard 35 new choral works, commissioned and premiered in community concerts throughout the state. The paper will clarify the effects of the program on audiences, composers and performers by reviewing evaluation results and exploring the cross-cultural influences of the compositions. Data has been collected from student, teacher and composer surveys; teacher and student focus groups; classroom observations; Cultural Advisory Committee meeting notes; audience and budget statistics; and related ??Cantar??! educational resources developed for music teachers and conductors. Key findings reinforce the profound impact of the arts (in this case, contemporary choral music) in the assimilation process of immigrant populations. As the public face of the immigrant group...

Aaron Copland’s Music for the Theatre: A Transcription for Wind Band Aaron Copland (1900-1990) can be considered one of the most significant musicians of the twentieth century, as his well-documented contributions as a composer, conductor, and author, are internationally celebrated. While some of his most well-known works were crafted during the late 1930s and 1940s (e.g., El salón México, Quiet City, Fanfare for the Common Man, Lincoln Portrait, Appalachian Spring), it is from an earlier, more developmental period in Copland’s life in which the inspiration for a new transcription for wind band can be found: his Music for the Theatre: Suite in Five Parts for Small Orchestra (1925). Copland’s Music for the Theatre was composed for a small orchestra consisting of woodwinds, brass, percussion, and reduced string section. Composed in five contrasting movements, the work displays a strong American sensibility due to Copland’s use of jazz harmonies, popular sounding themes, and unique choices in orchestration. Consequently, because of the composer’s frequent reliance upon woodwind, brass, and percussion timbres in the original orchestral version, Music for the Theatre possesses great potential as a transcription for wind band. Two main objectives exist within this project: to make available a high-quality wind transcription of a substantial orchestral work and to provide historical and formal information relating to the piece. More specifically...

Like most of the music Enrique Granados (1867--1916), the Piano Quintet in g minor, Piano Trio in C Major, and the Sonata for Violin and Piano were unpublished at the time of his death, not published until the 1970's. A problem encountered in the current editions of his chamber works with piano is the lack of an accurate representation of the music, including wrong notes, phrasings, dynamic markings, and in certain cases, a complete misrepresentation of the original work, all of which fall short of the composers original intentions. A few reasons may have caused these editorial errors: the lack of attention that Granados and his legacy placed on his own chamber works; the unprofessional manner in which the publishing houses edited his music; the difficulty in finding the location of original manuscripts. These factors may have contributed to the inaccurate editions of his chamber music with piano currently in use today. This document presents an accurate edition of the first movements of the Piano Quintet in g minor, Piano Trio in C Major, and the Sonata for Violin and Piano, based on Granados' original autograph manuscripts. A brief discussion of the influence of nineteenth-century composers such as Schumann, Brahms, and Faure is presented on the chamber works...

Suggestions have been made that computer musicians should attempt to compose fractal music, and questions have been raised whether there is such a thing as fractal music. Voss and Clark observed that music is scaling, or 1/f noise, as analyzed on the basis of the amplitude (loudness) of the audio signals; they failed to find a fractal distribution of acoustic frequencies (music notes) in music. Analyzing Bach's and Mozart's compositions, we have shown that the incidence of the frequency intervals, or of the changes of acoustic frequency, has a fractal geometry. Fractal phenomena are characterized by scale-independency. The purpose of this investigation is to demonstrate the self-similarity of music and to explore its implications.
